A Handbuilt 335 with Vintage Looks and Tone

The legendary ES-335 is sweeter than ever in the 2016 Gibson Memphis edition! Advancements in vintage coloring, a sustain-enhancing historic tubeless truss rod, and PAF-evoking Burstbucker pickups make this 335 look, play, and feel more like an original '58 than ever. From soulful blues to smooth jazz to gritty rock, there's just no substitution for the vibrant sustain and all-night comfort of the 335's contoured maple body with feedback-fighting center block. A more stable redesigned neck with rolled binding gives the Gibson Memphis 335 a smoother feel, and an adjustable ABR-1 bridge with titanium saddles helps accommodate the roughest to the most delicate of playing styles. Experience the instrument that shaped the sound of rock 'n' roll: the Gibson Memphis ES-335.

Handcrafted in the Gibson factory on Beale Street

Nobody makes a semi-hollowbody guitar like Gibson. This superb 335 is handcrafted in Gibson's Memphis Custom Shop on Beale Street for quality craftsmanship you can count on, and from a city that knows how blues should sound. Carefully selected maple and poplar tonewoods give the Gibson Memphis 335 its signature bark, and a carefully calipered body cavity with Titebond 50 glue joints and a maple center block give it its controlled howl and haunting sustain.

Burstbucker pickups deliver vintage PAF tone

Handwound Burstbuckers give this ES-335 the tight low end, complex midrange, and sweet highs of Gibson's vintage PAF ("Patent Applied For") pickups with extra clarity and power. Historically mismatched rhythm and lead pickups give each position a unique flavor for chords and leads, while pairing the pickups together unlocks a sweetness that even Gibson purists will appreciate. For a vintage 335 experience without the price tag, Sweetwater guitarists recommend checking out the Gibson Memphis ES-335.

Gibson Greatness

I have been playing guitar for many years and have been very blessed to have owned and played on some very fine instruments. I have spent the better of 25 years kicking myself for parting ways with my 1967 Gibson ES-335 that I foolishly sold to pursue other playing styles. Well now a big part of that pain and regret has been lifted upon receiving this 2016 version of the ES-335 figured maple edition. There is so much to love and appreciate with this instrument. For one the fit and finish are impeccable. Second, the beauty and grace of this guitar is absolutely stunning. The figured grain and light burst laquer finish give this guitar a very elegant look. Third, the tone and feel of this instrument is exactly what I remembered that "Old Red" used to have. This guitar is actually a little brighter and snappier than the '67 and it has a slightly different feel to the neck which I must say that I like a whole lot better. You can tell much about the way a guitar sounds without even plugging it in. This one is very open, loud and clear without amplification. The single notes just pop right out and the chords are very bright, ringing and distinct. The intonation was dead on and did not any adjusting. The pickups are BB1 and BB2's respectively for the neck and bridge and are both unpotted. The brightness and open tone of these pups caught me off guard at first. My first impression was that their tone was very harsh and brittle but after adjusting my tone stack and adding some gain, I realized what power and potential that they have. This was a lightbulb moment for me because I have traditionally used hotter after market pickups. Now I understand the hype and adoration of vintage style pickups! The hardware is a step up from some other Gibson guitars that I currently own. This one has titanium saddles on the bridge and a locking tailpiece that I will not be replacing. I love to customize my guitars to fit my needs but this one I will be leaving stock. At this price point it should not need anything else...lolOverall I am very pleased with this guitar. I named this guitar after my late mother because it is beautiful, sweet, elegant and has a very snarling growl when provoked. The 335 is an all time classic and in my opinion is the mother of all electric guitars. The lines, tone and feel of a good 335 is something special and cudos to Gibson for the work and craftsmanship that they are putting into this line. This guitar is a keeper and fits nicely with the blues, jazz and classic rock tunes that I play. "Nora" will hopefully be with me for the rest of my playing days.
