I see no need to go vintage...

Yes, I know, there are some differences from how the vintage models were made, but the current ES-345 offered by Gibson from Memphis is in a similar league to the originals. Plus, you have the option to plug into a mono jack - a much appreciated feature. The tonal palette is heading towards infinite. Certainly, in a small, quiet setting (i.e., coffee house, studio, man cave), the Varitone is a pleasure to experiment with and dial up interesting voices with. Also of note, the guitar sounds very robust in Varitone position 1 - not leaving me wishing I had an ES-335 for the "pure" sound. The weight, action, finish and feel of this insrument are incredible. The nut pings without lubrication, and the neck is slimmer than I'd prefer, but still feels like a jeweled bride on the honeymoon.
