EXACTLY what I wanted
I'm really into noisy lo-fi music, and I've been experimenting with always using a bit of distortion in conjunction with, or sometimes even instead of traditional compression. So a compressor that can tastefully add crunch to a wide variety of sounds or songs was a perfect fit. This is really easy to use, and it has worked well for drums, bass, guitar, vocals, piano, and synth. Crush-only sounds good, crunch-only sounds good, both sound good together, and the darkness setting is especially helpful to relax cymbals. I love that it has the blend included, since even on low settings the plugin has a noticeable effect.
Sold my soul to the Devil-Loc
this thing absolutely kills on parallel drum buss. so much extra punch and girth for rock and roll kick and snare. I originally had the limited version and upgraded to the full version. Its worth it for the extra mix and darkness controls (otherwise I sometimes needed an EQ too). I have also used this on a distorted vocal track and it added the perfect amount of grit without getting ugly. Test it out and you WILL want it too.
Hulk Smash!
If you loved the over the top insanity of SSL's LMC1 Listen Mic Compressor, but felt it could use just a smidge more control, here's your huckleberry. Even with more controls, it still doesn't have a lot of range, but you'll find a very surprising array of uses beyond the standard 'parallel drums buss' trick. I've even faded it up under a wispy clean vocal to enhance intelligibility. And NO WORRIES; all the Soundtoys' line has been updated for 64 bit, no wrappers required.
Sounds great, but...
It sounds great like I was hoping it would, and it's super-earsy to use. But...It took over five weeks of technical support from John at Sweetwater to get it going. It just would not appear in the plug-ins list in Logic 9. To make a long story short, it is a 32-bit plug-in, and since I was running in 64-bit mode, it wasn't showing. I think, in retrospect, if the product description had indicated that it was 32-bit, I don't think I would have bought it.
