I had never Had a Musical Instrument before and my Wife of 50 yrs and me were told to maybe start playing something so that Sharon could have new sights and sounds and something new for her to look at see and hear and she loves it. I'm Practicing like a kid trying to learn everything I can from Forward to Backward rolls to Slants and Taters and so appreciate of your purchase program without that I would have never been able to help Sharon thank you so much

Well worth the price of admission!

The look is great: maple veneer is very nice, tight curling/tiger striping with the appearance of good bookmatching, color of the stain very nicely matches the blonde/brown mahogany neck. The sound is fine: unplugged it has a very nice dobro tone, although I can't comment on acoustic volume compared to other designs. Plugged into a solid state amp with a nice clean-tone circuit this box sounds very good. Their are a few overly harsh responses to certain attacks so you have to be careful how you address it while playing through the pickup, but overall I'm NOT hearing that thin, brittle emptiness of tone often associated with a piezo element. Is it a perfect, uncolored reproduction of the acoustic tone? No. Of course not. But it is unmistakably the sound of a resonator with a lovely timbre. If you're looking to milk some dirty-delta out of a tube amp, this axe will do that beautifully as well! Right out of the box I was perfectly happy; no buzzes or other problems at all.

Try it you'll like it!

I recently realized that I needed a square neck resonator of some kind. I wanted a really good sounding, well-built instrument. It also had to fit a certain budget, which ruled out a lot of what is available. I finally pulled the trigger on the Epiphone Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Squareneck from Sweetwater. The instrument itself is solidly crafted, made in China to Dobro specifications. Looking it over cosmetically and trying to be nit-picky, I cannot find anything that I would consider a manufacturing flaw. The book-matching of the flame maple veneer on the back is as good as I have seen on any instrument at any price point. The Grover tuners operate smoothly and hold tune well. I find no cosmetic or other flaws in the body binding or hand-rubbed satin finish. While not inclined to open up the resonator for a close look inside, it sounds great and has no buzzes or rattles as it came to me from Sweetwater. The nut, while not bone, is slotted properly for the strings and should last a good long while before needing replacement. Unplugged, it has the right voice and sounds really good, and will record very well in the studio. I tested the electric sound by running the output of the passive Fishman pickup into an acoustic DI then into an amplifier (in this test Roland Cube set on JC Clean, with EQ set to neutral on the DI and the amp). It sounded great. Absolutely could not ask for better sound at this price point. Note: just to be thorough in this review, I also tried it running straight into the amp without the acoustic DI between the pickup and the amp, and that did not give such a good sound. Plan on using an acoustic DI if you're going to play it electrified. So to sum this up, I'm well satisfied with the Epiphone Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Squareneck. It fits my purposes and meets my expectations. I would buy it again, and I would recommend it to a friend.

Great instrument

This is my first dobro and I'm just learning so I'm by no means an expert on what makes a high quality dobro but this instrument sounds great to me and more than fulfills my needs. Very pleased with the instrument, the price and the service of Sweetwater's staff.
