Beyerdynamic DT 770 M 80 ohm Closed-back Isolating Monitor Headphones Reviews

Closed Diffuse Field Headphone with Straight Single-sided Cable, Volume Control, 35 dBA Isolation

When performing live to pre-recorded or sequenced tracks, drummers need a comfortable set of headphones for long shows with excellent ambient noise attenuation in order to hear click tracks or backing tracks clearly. To answer that need, Beyerdynamic designed the DT 770 M headphones. Because of their excellent noise rejection, they're also good for FOH engineers and DJs who do beatmixing.

Great sound and isolation

By Tommy Freeman from NC on July 25, 2021

We were looking for some headphones to mix for our Livestream. Unfortunately we have to do ITIN the same room as the mains at this time. These have great isolation making that much easier to accomplish, and our mix is sounding better already.

Professional Headphones

By Sweetwater Customer from NY on April 6, 2021 Music Background: Drummer

The sales engineer suggested I get these over others. When I got them and tried them out, I was surprised at how much they lean toward expensive professional headphones. The isolation is very very good, as well. The adjustment is firm and stays where I set them. They could charge a bit more and add a plug to remove the cable and better instructions on adjusting. Basically, tighter to play along with something and a bit looser to just listen. They are so comfortable, I'm even using them just for the isolation.

Best Tool for the Job

By Lawrence de Martin from New York City on March 26, 2018 Music Background: Professional acoustician and recording engineer

I record Classical and Jazz concerts from in the concert hall. I depend on headphones that are rugged, reliable, comfortable, precise and translate well to earn my keep. The DT 770 M give me the full frequency high isolation I need to calibrate the sound from the mic pair and ignore the sound where I am. When I am next to the mics and take off the Beyers, the sound stays the same.

They beat any "noise cancelling" phones for isolation, sound quality, reliability and plug-in convenience. They are so accurate I can use them for editing and mastering. I also NEED the long, straight cord, volume control and Beyerdynamic's supply of spare parts so you can repair these.

They are also the best headphones for drummers and bass players, listening on the train or subway and listening to concert level sound next to someone who needs silence.

Only downside: pro 80 Ohm impedance means they don't get as loud on consumer headphone jacks like phones and laptops - but the super isolation means you can turn down the volume and save your ears with less distortion. Besides, this saves on battery life!

Awesome experience !!

Had a good experience shopping with sweet water. I was really blown away with not only the prices but how knowledgeable they were we it can to the product I was buying . Very friendly and professional !!

Great phones Isolation monitoring.

By Alex Moore from Austin Texas on March 23, 2017 Music Background: Engineer, Producer, Drummer

Please keep in mind these headphones are designed to block maximum ambient noise and for that function - they sound awesome. *Yes* there are other headphones designed for sensitive mixing (but you wouldn't give those to a drummer - or the bass player standing next to his kit - during recording as they will let in too much ambient sound. This headphones are perfect for tracking next to a loud drummer or maybe (you are) the loud drummer. Either way- very sturdy build and for tracking they are also a very comfortable fit for long sessions. I own the Sennheiser HD280 pros (5 pair), the AKG K 240 MK II, and the Direct Sound EX-29. These are the best I've used for isolation, comfort, fit and sound for tracking with a loud drummer - absolutely.

Isolation headphones

By Sweetwater Customer on May 12, 2023 Music Background: Drummer for Traditional Blues and Progressive Rock. Folk winds, recording, mixing.

Like my Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros, these have great sound and are quite comfortable. They are not as comfortable as the DT 990s, since they are faux leather instead of sueded fabric, however, they are easy to wear for long stretches. The ear cups cover my huge ears nicely.

I bought these specifically for working at home, since my open back and earbuds were too noisy for my wife. She did not know I was wearing these and listening to loud music.

I have some recording coming up and I am looking forward to giving these a try in the studio.

For E-drums these are excellent.

By Weasel from TX on March 18, 2023 Music Background: Serious amateur drummer, and former pro roadie. I know gear.

While I haven't tried hundreds of headsets for my Roland TD50x setup, I can say that the difference in sound isolation is huge between these and the Sennheiser's HD280 Pro set they are replacing. Not hearing the sticks hitting the pads and e-cymbals really allows me to focus in on the percussion sounds I want to create and makes the entire sound of the kit tighter (while you don't notice the inherent latency of an ekit when playing it, it can "slur" the sound when you hear stick and module mixed together). While I'd rather have even more isolation for live stage use, I'd expect headphones with that much isolation to be heavier and substantially more expensive.

Great For Live Sound Monitoring!

By Robert Basilio from Flowery Branch, GA on September 9, 2022 Music Background: AV Production Lead, FOH Engineer

I like these so much, I bought these because the old ones we've had for years finally started falling apart. Even then, those still worked, it's just the earcups started falling off on occasion.

We use these to monitor individual tracks on our 48input, 24output mixer, as well as the livestream mix. These provide an accurate representation of pretty much everything, including bass, while also providing great isolation from the live sound. Particularly important for us as well, I've found that the mix in these translate well to hearing the livestream on other devices.

I trust these headphones to last long and provide me the information I need to make a good mix both live and recorded.

Designed for isolation

By Kenneth D Burton from FL on March 23, 2021 Music Background: Drummer and livesound

I own a pair of these and a pair of regular 770's. The regular 770's have a much better low-end frequency response because the 770m models have the bass port closed off to increase isolation, so you'll have to take that into account when mixing. Also, plan to eventually replace your ear pads either with another pair of the high isolation ones or the regular 770 ones. The ear pads provided are very good isolation but they're a little on the Sticky Side and will break down after a year or two, especially in a hot high humidity area like Florida.

Home Studio Use

By John from CA, USA on July 19, 2014 Music Background: Drummer, Studio recording

Primary use is for home recording, specifically for the isolation features. This is a recent purchase so an additional review is forthcoming. Nice fit, warm sound, and the volume control on the cord is a nice feature for making a subtle change to the incoming signal. Interested in seeing how well they isolate sound, both inside and outside of the cans.

Perfect headphones

By Andrew from Dorchester MA on April 11, 2014 Music Background: Recording and production

I've been struggling for years with headphone for voicing my clients. I need isolation great sound quality and great construction. These headphones have it all. And my clients love them also

Solid headphones

By Bill from Reston, VA on May 9, 2013 Music Background: Hobbyist

These are solid. Very good for isolation. Wouldn't say these have the best clarity of sound but they're not bad by any menas. Build quality is quite good (I also own two pairs of DT770 Pros), love the Beyerdynamics stuff.

Good sound, bad fit:

By Andrew Bradford from Frederick, MD on January 5, 2022

These phones provide good isolation and good sound quality, but for me, the head clamp pressure was too much to deal with. Since there is no way to adjust the clamp pressure, coupled with the ear pieces themselves not being able to swivel outward, i couldn't live with them and had to return. I don't have a large head, so i would think that this would be an issue for others as well.

Meh, not worth the price

By Ryan Duke from Washington on January 25, 2020 Music Background: Multi-Instrumentalist

These we're my first real pair of sound-isolating headphones, and in that regard, they're pretty okay. I like the sound nob right there on the wire, it easy to adjust the volume. These headphones are also pretty durable, so that pretty nice. However, for a headphone of this pricing, I really am disappointed by the sound quality. These headphones have absolutely no bass to them, which is a huge problem for me as I am a bassist and it totally messes up my mixes and makes me blow my bass tone way out of proportion.
If you're looking for some practice headphones to play drums with or something go with the Vic Firth sound-canceling headphones, they are much cheaper and have roughly the same sound quality.
If you're looking for good sound quality, don't get these!

Love this DESIGN

By Wai on May 21, 2018 Music Background: Game Music Producer

Own one(32 ohm version). It sounds a little bit harsh to my ears(around 9k), and I can't really hear 3k-7k clearly, BUT its low end sounds solid and flat to me basic on my Audio-Technica R70X's low end. I do love the design, and it really suitable for listening to some female voice! I think it totally worth the money.

Good quality/ Drum response not making the grade.

By Scott ''E'' from Coldwater Mi. on January 31, 2013 Music Background: Drum Instructor.

Purchased these a while back. I really like the comfort of closed over the ear head phones compared to in ear monitors. So I was hoping these would do what the add claims they would do. They do not. I use the Shure top of the line SE535 in ears.Guys, I have now tried everything. Their are simply no head phones that can come close to in ears when your monitoring drums live or in the studio. The DT 770M model.lacks the output level anf fidelity of my in ears 10/1 I have all the bells and whistles, headphone amp, pods, you name it. These are fine for other musicians or FOH use. But not for me. I would suggest you try the Shure in ear models. Even the lower priced ones, I'm ''Shure'' you'll be more satisfied. Happy drumming....Scott.

Ambient Noise Cancelation is Critical When Playing in a Drum Booth

By Kevin from Arkansas on August 25, 2023 Music Background: Drums & Percussion of many styles

I recently purchased the Beyerdynamic DT77 M 80 ohm headphones. Prior to using them I had my hearing tested and am in the normal range. I used the DT77 M 80 ohm headphones at a rehearsal two weeks ago. For this particular venue I play full size acoustic drums and cymbals inside a 360 degree drum enclose with a roof and sealed door. We zeroed out the monitor feed mix and built back up prior to rehearsing (to keep sound at safe levels). The amount of noise cancellation was far less than needed resulting in the need to increase the levels in the mix beyond safe dB range. The ambient drum sound inside the "cage" is significant. Bottom line, the Beyerdynamic DT77 M 80 ohm headphones are not a solution for this environment. After playing in the cage I experienced tinnitus (aka "ear ringing").

After some research, I purchased a set of Ultra Phones from GK music (higher price point) and have tried them inside the drum cage for two consecutive weeks of rehearsals and performances. Simply put, they work better than the Beyerdynamic. Noticeable improvement in ambient drum noise reduction and clearer/cleaner reproduction of other instruments in the mix. Overall dB level reduced.

Built Well but not accurate response

By lindsay clark from Memphis, TN on October 26, 2022

These headphones are built well,
unfortunately the metal strap that holds the two ear pieces together is quite stiff.
the sound is I know it's supposed to be flat for monitoring but it's unnatural sounding it so flat if you bring up the kick drum it sounds flat it's like it's limited in the amount the speaker diaphragm can move even when you increase the low end.
I don't know how to describe it but it doesn't respond to changes so as far as mixing I don't see how anybody could do it because it doesn't sound natural and I don't mean the retail hype :-)
I am returning these .

Do not deserve the 770 name

By Dan from Whitmore Lake on March 22, 2019 Music Background: Producing, Performing

The isolation is solid but man, the sound is really poor. I have been mixing / producing on 770 Pro 250ohm for years and they are amazing. I also tested the 770 Pro 80 ohm, they are very solid as well. But these are not remotely close, they should be given a different model name. They have horrible bass and are very muddy in the mids. I was interested in using them to play live so the isolation was appealing but for over ears they sound bad, my Westone UM Pro 30 in ears sound much better.

Not Really Viable or Priced Well.

By Ryan Duke from WA on August 16, 2020 Music Background: Drummer, Bassist, Vocalist.

As for these headphones, they are so absurdly overpriced. Aside from the fact that they are built like a tank, there is essentially no reason to wear them. Yes, they do block out noise pretty well, since I am a pretty hard-hitting drummer - but if you need something to just casually block the noise, try Sennheiser's HD 280 Pros or Sony's MDR-7506. For drummers that don't want in-ear monitors, check out Vic Firth's headphones.

So why are these headphones such a bummer?

Well, first off the only reason why these block out audio is because their so flipping tight on the head. There is no actual audio-canceling technology in these things. Second, The audio quality is that of 70 dollar competitor. There is no bass, the mids are present and the highs are just underwhelming. Additionally, after wearing these things for more than 15 minutes they become noticeably uncomfortable to the point of borderline painful, but I've got a pretty big head.
The only redeeming quality of these headphones is an easily accessible volume knob and the fact they've lasted me 4 years now. The fact that they're priced at $... right now is just utter nonsense.
I do not recommend these.

Nice Headphones, Cheap Cable

By Sweetwater Customer on June 18, 2017

These headphones sound great and are very comfortable, but the cable is very cheap. After a couple weeks, I was only getting one channel of audio and the problem was in the cable near the connector. If you buy these, expect to spend $ to replace the cable...or you can do it yourself, but the wires have some sort of resin on them that doesn't allow soldier to stick to the wires. I would recommend buying headphones with a detachable cable. It boggles my mind why Beyerdynamic doesn't sell headphones (as far as I aware) with a detachable cable.

NICE FIT REALLY SOUND BAD!

By CHRIS THORNBURG from ILLINOIS on November 29, 2013 Music Background: LIVE SOUND ENGINEER, RECORDING ENGINEER, PRO MUSICIAN

NICE CORD, NICE FIT... REASON FOR BUYING ISOLATION AND SOUND. ISOLATION IS OK BUT BECAUSE OF IMPEDENCE NEED A VERY HIGH POWERED HEADPHONE AMP. I USE A BEHRINGER HA4700 NEVER HAD PROBLEMS UNTIL USING THESE HEADPHONES. THE SOUND IS LOW MUDDY NO PRESENCE NO HIGH END OR HIGH MID. I HAVE TO BOOST THE HIGH EQ ON HEADPHONE AMP TO GET ANY CLARITY FROM HEADPHONE. I AM ALSO PUSHING SO MUCH VOLUME THROUGH AMP AND HEADPHONE THAT IT SITS ON THE EDGE OF CLIPPING AT JUST BARELY ENOUGH VOLUME. I USE THEM TO REPLACE A PAIR OF IN EARS MOLDS DURING A REPAIR, AND WOULD DEFINITLY NOT RECOMMEND THEM. MAYBE THE PRO'S SOUND BETTER.

Not very good

By Carter from Charlottesville, VA USA on March 10, 2011 Music Background: Metal Musician, Home Studio Recording Engineer

These headphones block sound very well for drummers, but I would not recommend them. The rubber part that surrounds your ears eventually will start coming out. Also, when it's hot, or they've been sitting around for a while, the rubber coverings will stick to each other and come out. It's a huge hassle trying to put them back in. I threw these in the trash.

Not very isolating and sounds horrible

By DT from Usk, WA on June 21, 2023

... feels cheap too. Buy something else..

poor connections

By Alan Batson from WEST YARMOUTH, MA on August 19, 2022

Failed after less than six months, loose connections, poor design now sending back to get repaired. One side just quit working, very nominal use. Keep shopping.
