Monitoring headphones for drummers and FOH-Engineers

When performing live to pre-recorded or sequenced tracks, drummers need a comfortable set of headphones for long shows with excellent ambient noise attenuation in order to hear click tracks or backing tracks clearly. To answer that need, Beyerdynamic designed the DT 770 M headphones. Because of their excellent noise rejection, they're also good for FOH engineers and DJs who do beatmixing.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 M at a Glance:

  • High SPL capability and excellent ambient noise attenuation.

  • 10ft connecting cable equipped with an in-line volume control.
  • Rugged headband construction and adjustable, sliding earpieces.

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 M is a closed dynamic headphone designed especially for drummers. Due to its high SPL capability and excellent ambient noise attenuation, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 M is also suitable for monitoring PA systems (FOH), live on stage, and in studios.

Optimum Setup
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 M's single-sided 10 foot connecting cable allows easy handling for everyday use and is equipped with an in-line volume control for optimum control. It's fitted with a gold-plated mini stereo plug (3.5 mm) with a 1/4" (6.35 mm) adapter and is therefore suitable for use with almost all headphone amplifiers.

Built for Strength and Comfort
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 M's rugged headband construction has been strengthened to give a very secure fit, matched with mechanical reliability. Soft earpads that are easy to clean and adjustable and sliding earpieces ensure listening comfort during extended periods of use.

Great phones Isolation monitoring.

Please keep in mind these headphones are designed to block maximum ambient noise and for that function - they sound awesome. *Yes* there are other headphones designed for sensitive mixing (but you wouldn't give those to a drummer - or the bass player standing next to his kit - during recording as they will let in too much ambient sound. This headphones are perfect for tracking next to a loud drummer or maybe (you are) the loud drummer. Either way- very sturdy build and for tracking they are also a very comfortable fit for long sessions. I own the Sennheiser HD280 pros (5 pair), the AKG K 240 MK II, and the Direct Sound EX-29. These are the best I've used for isolation, comfort, fit and sound for tracking with a loud drummer - absolutely.

Home Studio Use

Primary use is for home recording, specifically for the isolation features. This is a recent purchase so an additional review is forthcoming. Nice fit, warm sound, and the volume control on the cord is a nice feature for making a subtle change to the incoming signal. Interested in seeing how well they isolate sound, both inside and outside of the cans.

Solid headphones

These are solid. Very good for isolation. Wouldn't say these have the best clarity of sound but they're not bad by any menas. Build quality is quite good (I also own two pairs of DT770 Pros), love the Beyerdynamics stuff.

Good quality/ Drum response not making the grade.

Purchased these a while back. I really like the comfort of closed over the ear head phones compared to in ear monitors. So I was hoping these would do what the add claims they would do. They do not. I use the Shure top of the line SE535 in ears.Guys, I have now tried everything. Their are simply no head phones that can come close to in ears when your monitoring drums live or in the studio. The DT 770M model.lacks the output level anf fidelity of my in ears 10/1 I have all the bells and whistles, headphone amp, pods, you name it. These are fine for other musicians or FOH use. But not for me. I would suggest you try the Shure in ear models. Even the lower priced ones, I'm ''Shure'' you'll be more satisfied. Happy drumming....Scott.
