Enough simultaneous inputs to track the whole band

Track the whole band at once, with the TASCAM DP-24SD Digital Portastudio. The DP-24SD comes loaded with eight individual inputs. Each input is equipped with an XLR-1/4" combo jack and a microphone preamplifier, complete with phantom power for your condenser mics. That means even if you use a handful of microphones on drums and a couple more on guitars and bass, you'll still have an input left on the DP-24SD to track vocals.

Loaded with onboard effects and powerful built-in signal processors

No studio is complete without quality effects and signal processors. That's why TASCAM loaded their DP-24SD Digital Portastudio with a ton of studio-style tools. Record with vital processors such as equalizers, compressors, and limiters, while the DP-24SD's onboard guitar-amp-simulation engine adds real amplifier sound to your instrument input. You can sweeten your sound with reverb, chorus, and other enhancements during mixdown. What's more, the TASCAM DP-24SD's powerful onboard mastering effects let you get the most out of your final mixes.

Intuitive channel-strip-style controls make tracking and mixing easy

Why wade through tedious menus for the controls that should be close at hand? TASCAM built the DP-24SD to be both powerful and intuitive to use, with none of the frustrating awkwardness that plagues over-engineered gear. The DP-24SD's simple master channel-strip section gives you hands-on controls for your channel EQ, pan, and send settings. There's also an easy-to-read color display that gives you instant feedback as you tweak your channel settings, effects, and processors, as well as dedicated controls for all essential recording functions.

Amazing

I own a dozen Portastudios; going back to my 1980 144. They are all great, and the all still work. This is the best one, in terms of sound, features and ease of use. It's amazing, and not expensive. Highly recommended. Before this, my 2488 was my main machine. That one is great, but this one is even better. It does a great job for me.

Another solid performer

I started out back in the 90s with Tascam & Fostex 4-track cassette recorders. Tascam always puts together a solid product. I've had this unit for about a month or two now and it is fantastic. It even masters your song for you. Never had a machine like that before. It was a little tricky figuring out how mastering works, but tutorials online helped solve that issue.

Wayne Wildman, my sales engineer, was awesome in getting this to us quickly. Thanks, Wayne!

I love the features. The guitar amp simulator is simplistic but good in its simplicity. You get choices of cab configurations and can add an effect like chorus, though I don't like adding Phase from the machine: it's very saturating and there's no way I've found to dial it down. I attach my old Line 6 PODxt to it to add even more effects.

You can record a song in 48kHz and 24 bit, which is above CD standard, and the unit takes up to a 32GB SDHC card. Make sure the one you get is a fast read card, other wise you might bog down. I don't know that through experience, but I won't take that chance, either.

The stereo tracks are useful to Bounce drums and left-right guitars to and the built-in compression works as advertised. I use it for recording vocals. I've never been into recording on a computer - I tried it a couple of times and found that the recording takes around a second to come through the headphones which throws me off every time, so stand alone machines are my exclusive fancy.

8 XLR-1/4" combination inputs are fantastic, each one with the potential for phantom power. What more could you ask for?

Awesome product. Thanks, TASCAM.

Fantastic Multitrack recorder!

I purchased this because of the simplicity vs. using a computer based DAW. Even though I'm pretty technological, I don't have the time to learn a DAW. I just want to flip the switch and get my music recorded. The Tascam fits the bill perfectly. I will mainly be recording drums at home using the various tracks available. I've been using it for a week and couldn't be happier. I feel that the learning curve is very minor. The menus are intuitive and the manual does a decent job of walking you through everything. Best part is not needing a computer for any of it. Do know that you need to know or learn how to mix in order to get studio quality results. I believe that some people assume that the machine will automatically do everything for them and that's not exactly how it works. It's easy to record but mixing takes practice. This is the perfect machine though for learning that. Either way the basic recorded results are excellent on their own. I was between the this machine and the Zoom R24 and picked the Tascam. The Zoom seemed flimsy and basic and the many negative reviews reflect that. The Zoom from what I read is geared towards someone who wants to use a computer based DAW along with the unit plus the Zoom is much older technology! The Tascam is built like a tank, has controls for everything and a nice color screen as well. It's a true all in one studio without requiring any computer. I'm very happy with it and look forward to making many recordings. A+

Really surprisngly excellent!

I was a longtime Tascam Portastudio owner, specifically two 244's and the 2 track model. Of course, hiss from the tapes and lack of functions we take for granted these days were the cons. When this was on sale for $399 about 7 months ago, I finally snapped one up and boy am I glad I did!

The reverb on this is so good that I take old tracks, run them through Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab 2 and get rid of noises and the inject the old tracks back into the DP 24 and the sound great! Unlike a 244, the reverb is multi-directional instead of mono and reflection and bounce time can easily be adjusted. Beautiful!

What I do is to have the DP usb'd to a computer. I record tracks, then do a mixdown with the solo selected. This is a trick I invented for myself as it is not in the manual and would be the reason why someone would prefer a computer based daw: that you can edit the tracks visually. All you have to do to edit the heck out any track, as many times as you want to perfect it is to perform a mixdown by pressing the mixdown button, then press the solo button, the press the record button of the track you want to edit (or many tracks to collate them into one mix, like a fancy bass track that you can't physically execute) and do a real-time mix. When finished, you hit "save", then you hit "usb" to link the DP to your computer, drag the track out of the "Music" folder into a pre-defined folder on your computer, open it in an editing program like Sound Forge, do your edits, re-save and inject it back into the DP by dropping it into the "Audio Depot" folder (which you see when you launch the usb conection) and clean out the pre-edited track and drag the edited version right back into the same track location! So cool and easy when you know how, so the argument that you cannot edit the waveforms visually is not true. I record a click, then tracks against that. When I am ready to edit, I make a stereo mixdown with the click panned all the way left, an instrument all the way right and then move notes around to perfect them, save it as a mono track and re-inject it! Just have decent computer management skills and you'll be ok!!

To do this kind of editing probably requires a very expensive, stable computer where there is no lag time (none here!) For the price, plus about $45.00 for the punchin/out pedal, a decent mini usb cable and maybe a multi-usb hub for many backups onto flash drives, you cannot go wrong. I love the sound quality, very hi-fi, no hiss, beautiful reverb and cool tricks to out-think the machine. Plus there are some great video series on this machine on the net for free.

A shout out to Mike DeFraties my sales guy for always being helpful.
