Stingray 5 vs Dimension V
I recently made the transition to 5-string via a MM Stingray 5 HH. I needed a second 5-string because... well, I just did. Instead of getting another SR5, I decided to get something similar... but different. So I ordered the Dimension V HH. The 2 basses both have 1.74" nuts, HH PUPs, active electronics, 5 way switching, Ash body, and Maple FB. On paper the 2 instrument should sound very similar. However, the MM has much more "GROWL" while the Dimension has a much "cleaner" tone. I think the difference is the PUP placement: both PUPs on the Dimension are positioned more towards the bridge. So much so that the bridge PUP alone is very "harsh" sounding. The 2 single coil positions and the HH position give a very nice tone and the neck PUP alone give a (almost) hollow body tone that some might find useful. This bass will be a nice compliment to the MM, but it truly has it's own "voice". I think most people would rate this bass a "5", but I measure everything against my Alembic BalK (admittedly not a fair comparison and I would also rate my SR5 a "4").
