Martin D-17M 6-string Acoustic Guitar at a Glance:
  • A superb recording instrument
  • The choice of session guitarists for decades
  • The CF Martin legacy
A superb recording instrument

When it comes to recording flat-picked acoustic guitars, professional recording engineers prefer instruments with a mahogany back and sides rather than rosewood. If that surprises you, understand that it has to do with the preponderance of low end inherent in rosewood-bodied guitars (that must dealt with) versus the perfection with which a properly-recorded mahogany-bodied acoustic sits within a track. Martin D-18 wrote the book on mahogany dreadnoughts. Like its elder brother, the D-17M plays nice with its mix mates and is an ideal choice for tracking in a thick mix, yet it sounds rich and full-bodied on its own.

The choice of session guitarists for decades

The Martin D-17M's ideal tonality is just as useful in the studio as it is onstage. This guitar has an uncanny ability to set itself into any mix nicely, with a minimum of processing. Sure, that big-body rosewood axe looks great, but you'll be rolling off low frequencies and carefully adjusting compressors to prevent it from getting too boomy or indistinct in the final mix. Just grab your Martin D-17M, point your favorite small-diaphragm condenser mic at the 12th fret, and you've got a gorgeous acoustic guitar sound that practically mixes itself.

The CF Martin legacy

What hasn't been said about the CF Martin company? Martin, a name virtually synonymous with the acoustic guitar, took root in the United States in 1833 with a little shop in lower Manhattan. Five years later, Christian Frederick Martin moved his business and family to the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, where Martin's been located ever since. From the dreadnought body shape to the 14-fret neck, Martin innovations parallelled (and indeed, drove) the development of the the acoustic guitar itself. When you play any Martin guitar, you're holding a piece of music history. When you play a Martin D-17M, you've got the real deal in your hands.
