Vintage Ribbon Vibe, Modern Performance

At Sweetwater, the legendary RCA 44 commands reverence. The 44 sounded so sweet on brass - and just about everything else. Now the Cloud 44-A serves up those coveted sonics in a state-of-the-art ribbon mic designed for today's applications. Inside the Cloud 44-A, Cloud Microphones didn't change the ribbon itself - it's still handcrafted to RCA's original 1930s specs. But everything else has been re-engineered to the highest 21st-century standards. Sporting unique features such as Cloud's acclaimed Cloudlifter circuitry and Voice/Music response curves, the 44-A gives you silky-smooth, ultra-clean response, in an active ribbon mic with vintage vibe and modern performance.

Cloud Microphones 44-A Ribbon Mic at a Glance:
  • Choose your response curve: Voice or Music
  • Cloudlifter technology, for pristine, transparent gain
Choose your response curve: Voice or Music

The Cloud 44-A is the only active ribbon mic with switchable Voice/Music response curves for controlling proximity effect. This patent-pending technology includes a switchable interface that gives you two frequency response voicings that are quite useful across a wide range of recording situations. Vocalists and voiceover artists can use the "Voice" setting to immediately reduce boomy proximity effect from being close to the microphone. It's also great for reducing rumble or vibration noise present when capturing an instrument at close range. Of course, there are times when you'll want full-range bass response of the "Music" setting. Either way, the Cloud 44-A's switchable interface gives you a microphone with two distinct voices, letting you deploy the special sound of a ribbon microphone on a variety of new sources.

Cloudlifter technology, for pristine, transparent gain

The phantom-powered Cloudlifter technology onboard the Cloud 44-A provides you with gobs of pristine, totally transparent gain, which turns any preamplifier into a "ribbon" pre. And when you've got extra-long cable runs, the Cloudlifter is a real lifesaver. The Cloud 44-A requires phantom power and has an output level compatible with any modern preamp. Included is the Cloud U1 shockmount, a beautiful handcrafted wooden box and a microfiber mic cover, designed to properly store and clean the microphone.

Simply an amazing microphone.

My main reason for purchasing this microphone was recording upright bass. It absolutely excels in that role - the low end of the upright bass is warm, full, and present. The mids and highs, the neck articulations that make an upright sound the way it does, are sweet - not harsh or overly accentuated. In addition to upright, I also recently used this microphone on tenor sax, and was floored at how good it sounded. The integrated cloud lifter makes the mic easy to use with just about any preamp. Put it all together, and the price is a steal. Highly recommended!
