nice and practical small combo for practice. it is very loud and the on board effects are very nice and useful.

however it pops loudly whenever you turn it on or off

Want a good practice amp? This Is Worth Every Penny And More!

By Bill A on June 8, 2023

This is the best, and easiest to use $ amp I've ever come across. It has all the cool "Dad Rock" and many other tones built right in. PERFECT for the armchair Rockstar that has to maintain a lower volume adult existence. No compromise on tone with lower volume.

Fender Champion 20 Amp

By Earl from Houston on May 18, 2023 Music Background: retired...been playing forever (and a day)

i have written a review in the past on the fender champion 20 & 40 amps...
i own & purchased both from sweetwater, and gave the nod to the 40 in my first review...
i only play my 3 les pauls at home...they never leave my place except for setup or adjustments...

i have to admit, there are some sweet tones for the bedroom player on the champion 20 i don't get on the 40...
both have volume set at "2" and gain on "3"...low volume...
probably because of that, it brings out more of the fullness on the champion 20 amp..

i like the spring reverb setting on "FX" and usually the '65 deluxe or tweed deluxe on voicing...
very satisfied with both amps...may try a champion 100 next....i like the sound of fender's special design speaker!!!

all those amps have something to offer....from the bedroom to the stage....

Sounds good on paper

By James Wilson from RALEIGH, NC on March 29, 2023

Does have a nice list of effects but honestly like with most modeling amps your style is so complicated and quite frankly the tones are crap compared to just some old school styles amps every amp sitting is different dialing in your distortion doesn'tmake sense either get a headphone amp or just build yourself the freaking pedal board

Impressive and Affordable

By Steven Doman from Walton Hills, OH on March 27, 2023 Music Background: Playing out since 1967

Sound quality is impressive for a small SS amp. Most of the effects sound marvelous. I was looking for an amp I could play jazz with at home. Out of the box, the tones were a bit sterile--but after a week, perhaps the 8 inch speaker broke in and sounded warmer; yet still not producing the warmth of my larger Vox Valvetronix amp. As fate would have it, the latter amp developed some problems soon after my receiving the Champion. Therefore, I am returning the Champion 20 and trying to decide what to get next. However, the Fender impressed the heck out of me; especially for an amp that is so affordable.

A Decent Practice Amp

By Rick Moore from Wyoming on March 8, 2023 Music Background: Many bar bands

It would be hard to beat for portability, it's light and compact. The built in effects sound good, and there are a variety of sounds to be made. Its only weakness, in my opinion, is the 8 inch speaker. But, there are a couple of voice settings where that isn't noticeable. For the price and the purpose, it's a great value.

Excellent (especially for beginners)

By Matt on January 27, 2023

I got this amp for my Squire Strat, and it works flawlessly! I am not a beginner to the guitar (I've played acoustic for years) but I am to the electric guitar. This amp contains everything I need to satisfy me when I'm trying to mimic my favorite artists, but it's still cheap enough that I didn't break the bank purchasing it. I would highly recommend it to any beginner, or anyone wanting a nice sound without spending tons of money!

Better then you think!

By T-Bird from Lincoln, NE on January 13, 2023 Music Background: PRO

I have to say out of the box I was blown away, this little guy really is a gem. A full sound from my archtop through an 8" speaker is just what I was looking for. It will work for a duo really well and love the easy settings, the spring reverb is pretty dang good and happy about that as well. Lightweight but made well. You can't go wrong for the money, so glad I got one as they are worth every penny.

Loud popping sound when turned off

By Graeme on December 13, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist

This is a great sounding and versatile practice amp but with a loud popping sound after it is turned off. This issue has been discussed in many blogs with many possible fixes most of which would void warranty. If this is annoying you then simply plug a 3.5mm plug into the headphone socket before powering off. This mutes the power amp input and significantly lessens the loudness of the pop. Or upgrade to the Champion 40 which has a power amp chip with muting function resulting in a tiny pif sound after powering off.

Absolute Bargain

By Dan Westphal from Kentucky on December 7, 2022 Music Background: OLDER THAN DIRT guitar player

I've played a Twin Reverb for years and loathe to lug it around any more. This little gem can produce amazing sound and eliminates the need of two or three pedals with its efxs selections.

The volume can fill a small club and the stereo output can be fed to a power amp if you need to fill a hall.

The voicing is very good if not great. Mellow to Metal and more.

I guess the only question is longevity, but at $, it's almost disposable.

My best purchase this year! 5 Stars

Good practice amp for the money

By Sweetwater Customer from WI on November 30, 2022

If you are looking for a cheap practice amp here you go. Lightweight. I'm a pro level player so I did up grade the speaker with a Weber 8A125-8-20w. Much better. Now it sounds closer to my vintage tube Fender amps. The stock speaker has a shrill tendency. But if your a dirt pedal player it won't make much diff. I'm a clean player.

Nice little amp, but!

By Greg from Philly on October 14, 2022 Music Background: Retired Wanna-be-Jazz player

This a great small amp for the beginner or even a seasoned player who needs a small practice amp. It has great Fender tones and enough diversity for almost any player. The only thing I don't like about it is, it has a loud "pop" sound when turning it off. and it's very annoying. I understand this is common in solid-state amps. But in this modern state of technology, I wonder why manufacturers have not yet addressed this issue. That's why the rating of 3 and 1/2 stars.

Nice little practice amp, But!

By Gregory A. Henley from Philadelphia, PA on September 30, 2022 Music Background: Retired Wanna-be Jazz player

This is a great small practice with great features and good Fender tones. It has all a guitarist needs to get almost any sounds you desire. But the problem (for me anyway), is it has this annoying loud "pop" when turning the amp off. It really bugs me and I can't imagine that's good for the amp. It sounds like it could blow the speaker out. This makes me use the amp sparingly, as I hate that sound. I've tried tuning the amp off first, then turning the amp off last, and still no luck. The amp is plugged into a Furman Power Conditioner and surge protector. This would be a 4-star plus small amp if not for that fault.

Just arrived and been using it for a few hours, it's a huge upgrade from my Squire Frontman 10 amp. I get all the classic fender tones I need with some cool effects, it's more than loud enough, and really brings out the tones from my guitar, I have some Ted Mex pickups and the really ring out and breakup when you dig into the strings, so much fun, and the service at Sweetwater is the best, they rock!!!!!

TRUE REVIEW

By Mike from Clearwater Floridia on June 17, 2022 Music Background: Studio Owner, Lifelong Musician

You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! Seriously here goes. If you think a $149.00 solid state amp can compete with a 1965 Blackface Tremolux a Kendrick Super Duper Reverb ( both of which I own) psssst... you're an idiot. However if you are looking to buy a beginner their first guitar amp, need a bedroom amp or practice amp YOU CAN NOT DO BETTER THAN THIS AMP. HELL it costs me almost $150.00 to fill my gas tank for a week these days ( and YES HE DID DO THAT) . I recently purchased this amp for my 10 year old Stepdaughter. A violin player who now has the ITCH TO RAWK!! Well in I enter to the rescue. I purchased this amp, the Squier Bullet Mustang package a Fender locking strap and the GRRRRRL is ready to Kick *** and all for under $600.00 with shipping and tax. Sweetwater is the Best , Fender is the Best and if I'd have had this package at 10 years old I might be the best. You are always going to read some review with some Miss Priss nit picking any product but ignore them they're the same snobs who drink tea with their pinky extended, do you really want advice from that guy/ gal??? No you don't. BUY THIS AMP ...YOU'RE WELCOME

Great practice amp!

By Timothy O'Connell from SWARTHMORE, PA on June 11, 2022 Music Background: classic rock

This is a great amp to own for practice but it shouldn't be your "main" amp. It's perfect to have in your living room to use for practice or showing people some tunes. It's also very good for playing quietly at night with headphones and not disturbing anyone. The amp has many different models (60's, 70's ,80's)included. I think almost everyone could enjoy and benefit from this sweet little amp.

This is a great little amp.

By Chas from Michigan on May 9, 2022 Music Background: Screwing around on guitar for years. Still suck.

Arrived fast. 2 days. Good packaging, everything in order. I was surprised at how good it sounds and the features. This is not a economy practice amp from the 80's.

Remember the crunch the old Gorilla amps brought? It has that and more. With inflation figured in, it still is a hell of a lot better value. Lots of more features also. I Love this little amp. Only complaint is a loud pop when you turn it off. I understand they all do this, and lack of 2 channels. Other then that it's totally worth it.

Simple but Sweet

A LOT OF SOUND PACKED IN A SMALL AMP

By Larry from Tennessee on April 19, 2022 Music Background: 50 years playing guitar and bass

The perfect practice amp. Hey, I'd even play a gig with it (running it through sound system, of course)
I recently purchased a Fender Deluxe Reverb Tone Master recently and I can actually get this Champion to emulate it while adding on-board effects! No need to elaborate since if you're reading this review you've already familiar with the specs. I would purchase now before prices keep creeping up due to the political climate we're living in. Thx to Dennis Konicki, my sales engineer, who always follows up on my purchases and gives me guidance.

Fender 20 watt champ

By Henry Holman from Kenosha Wisconsin on March 22, 2022

I recently purchased this amp for light weight travel and to be able to jam with an electronic drum kit thinking it couldn't compete with accoustic drums, I was wrong , this amp delivers power to be heard in a compact size. I absolutely love it and recommend it.

Great practice amp

By Sweetwater Customer on March 9, 2022

I had a Blues Jr. tweed that was solid state. I loved it but the A/B switch kept going haywire. I needed a new amp and wanted another Fender in the 15 to 20 watt range. I saw this and ordered it. It is really cool. There a four amp settings:Fender tweed,Fender blackface,British which is like a Marshall/Vox combo and a one for metal. There are a bunch of effects like chorus, flange, reverb, wah and a few others. You can pretty much dial in whatever sound you want with this. It's plenty loud in the 20 by 20 room I practice in. I play my SG and an old Guild Starfire through it and both sound good.

I love it but . . .

By James Moore from Jay, FL on January 9, 2022

This is a great little amp. Dos what I need but the loud pop when I turn it off is very annoying. If I were playing it in church or another venue, it would bother the audience. All I have read out this is, "They all do it." Well, Fender it is time you fixed this.

Fender Champion 20

By Jim Snyder from NH on December 17, 2021

I was upgrading from an Orange Mini, wanting a little more power and some options for tone. My amp arrived in surprisingly sturdy packaging and was just as advertised. As a practice amp the Champion has enough power to elicit complaints if anyone else is home. The tone options are probably more than I really need but haven't explored them all yet. I'm thoroughly satisfied with this purchase.

As always, service from Sweetwater was flawless. I'm just an old guy trying to get better at guitar in my home office but I couldn't have been treated better if I was Eric Clapton.

Fender Champion 20 amp

By Ted from Colorado on November 30, 2021

A fun little practice amp which sounds fine and with lots of effects options. The effects are a little hard to understand and set being selected from one knob and the amp makes a loud annoying pop when turned off but all in all worth the money for a practice amp.

Perfect Bedroom Amp

By Timothy O'Connell from SWARTHMORE, PA on November 27, 2021 Music Background: classic rock

I honestly believe that any player of almost any type of music can use one of these little amps. They're not loud, they're not perfect tone-wise but it's a practice amp. The Champs give you a lot of bang for your buck: built in effects and the different Fender amp models over the years it's great for variety. Most importantly it has a headphone jack and this is the big seller for me. I can grind away at night and test all my pedals. Absolutely worth buying.

Remarkable small SS Amp

By Rob from Oklahoma, USA on November 25, 2021 Music Background: Amateur Musician

I have all the amps and pedals anyone could want x10. I bought this for a friend's kid as a starter amp. I had it shipped to me to try it out just to make sure everything worked, the guitar was setup properly and to include a bunch of extras (gig bag, pics, strings, etc) I had. I've never been more impressed with a little amp than I am with this one. I'm seriously considering buying the bigger brother for my own ease of travel/practice with friends. Surprisingly loud for a solid state 20 watt amp, the effects and multi-channel emulation is remarkable. If I'd had this in the 80s as kid I would have considered myself in heaven as a new guitar player. I'm sure there are other wonderful alternatives out there but I did my research and this one looked fantastic. It has more than lived up to the billing and the price for what you get is amazing in such a small package. Well done Fender, and I say that as a Marshall fanboy!

Super Impressed

By Lewis Lott from New Castle, De. on October 18, 2021 Music Background: Semi Pro Semi Retired

This is more of an update, I've actually already left a rave review for this product. Just last weekend I used this amplifier outdoors with the intention of having a mic through a PA, however the soundman didn't turn it up in the PA, resulting in the amplifier projecting on its own to a small crowd of people outdoors. Surprisingly the amplifier held its own with electric drums, Keyboards and vocals all run through the PA I am planning on buying a second one to use at small venues and outdoor venues that I often play that have a noise ordinance in the area, I love the results I get using it with my zoom G5n. I like the tone as much as my friend's Fender super sonic head and cab, of course it's not as loud, but the tonal quality is there. I'm looking forward to running two of them in stereo with a chorus
Of course I'm pushing it harder with the zoom G5n, You can see my other review, I also like being able to add other effects quickly without having to go into my zoom. If you need a compact light weight gig ready Rig for smaller venues I highly recommend this combination, It's perfect for this aging disabled guitar player.

So far 5 stars

By Joko from Mich. on October 18, 2021 Music Background: decades of playing for cash

It sounds much better than expected and the effects are decent. The cleans are good and the 3 stages it goes through for each amp model is usable especially on the cleaner Fender amp models....the others are okay and you can get some use out of them if the event isn't dictating more expensive and more professional gear. For around $150.00 sent to my door it is a great little amp. I intend on using this for little group jam sessions etc...recording. I am not using this for gigs as I am on the waiting list for a Roland JC 22 which is currently out of stock. I am selling the remaining tube amp I have as the rest are gone. I will use the JC 22 for more serious gigs....IF THEY EVER COME BACK IN MY LIFE TIME....

Exceeds my demands.

By Lewis Lott from New Castle De. on October 6, 2021 Music Background: R&B Rock Funk P&W

I've had this amp for around 6 months now and I bought it just for some light jamming. But when my hot rod deluxe went out on me, I started using this in church for praise and worship. The weight is perfect for me as I am old and weak, I didn't expect much but when pushed with a zoom g5n into the clean blackface setting I get more than enough volume for a monitor, not to mention it sounds great. I just hang a sennheiser e609 over it and run through the PA and I have a great rig without the overpowering stage volume of larger amps. I use a deluxe reverb model with an edge of break up tone into a clean blackface model and get a tone similar to "the evil twin reverb" with the red knobs. It sounds huge at the foh. I'm able to get more volume from the amp by turning up the output from the zoom. It is very articulate and actually capable of being too loud, even though we rock hard in my church. The best light weight amp I could imagine. I still have several large Tube amps but will use this wherever I can, much more than I expected when I bought it and the price is a no brainer. Great for recording as well. The only draw back is that I didn't buy it at Sweetwater. At the price it's worth checking out for yourself.

Decent amp

By John Kopchia from Michigan on September 30, 2021 Music Background: been playing for money since the mid 60's

I have had this amp a few days and it is tiny and light but surprisingly loud for such a tiny amp. The various amp models and effects all sound decent... more so the traditional Fender clean sounds....the British sounds are what I expected along with the metal settings...they are useable. If you put this amp in its proper perspective it is a good buy as I have had some effects pedals cost more than this amp. It will work perfect for exactly what I bought it for...it would have been a 5 star rating had they added a line out. I'd rather have that than the auxiliary which I have no use for. I have seen some mods on youtube...changing speakers and even a speaker baffle plus adding in a speaker jack so it can be connected to a bigger speaker cabinet... There are a lot of positive reviews for this amp....the truth in that will be if this lasts for years without problems. I know the Champion series of 10 or so years ago developed a nasty shielding problem and was too noisy due to that. Time will tell. Though next year just around summer time I will be buying a Roland JC-22 30 watt amp. The thing is plenty powerful enough to do the gigs I play and does not take up much space. I love traveling as light as possible being in my early 70's

Perfect practice amp.

By Steve K. from Ohio on September 28, 2021 Music Background: Played guitar for 58 years.

Perfect practice or beginner's amp for bedroom, den, or any room in the house. I was really surprised by how loud this little amp was. Well made, great tone, great effects. Whether you are a beginner or someone who has played for years, this is a great little practice amp.

Great small practice/bedroom amp!

By Ryan from NY state on September 17, 2021

When my cheap tube amp stopped working properly (even trying new tubes, cleaning all connectors), I decided to find a decent sounding solid state amp that was smaller and more portable. I've owned some Fender amps in the past, and they were always reliable. I watched a lot of YT reviews of the Champion 20 and thought it would fit the bill, and it sure does! The amp voices are great, the Fender are, of course, the best sounding (to me). The effects are nice, and it puts out some volume for such a small package!

It definitely doesn't sound exactly like a tube amp, but it sounds good, and the playing dynamics really mimic tubes pretty well. Turn down the guitar volume, and the sound cleans up nicely! The metal settings are something else, might sound bad turned up loud, but at practice levels, actually sound OK! The Tweed and Black Panel settings sound the best, TO ME, and will give clean country, smooth blues, up to classic rock crunch.

Now if it just helped me play better, which it will in time because it's actually easier to dial in than my cheapo tube amp was...I recommend this to someone wanting a small, but versatile practice amp. Beginners, seasoned players, I think this would be great for everyone. I didn't expect it to make me smile as much as it does! You really get your money's worth with this little amp.

Ideal First Amp

By Ian from Minneapolis on July 14, 2021

This was my first, and still is my go-to guitar amp. Fantastic for playing at home, although it can be a little muddy at lower volumes. Definitely loud enough for a garage/backyard gig when it's cranked up. The amp voices and built-in effects are great, even though there's no distortion/OD/fuzz built in you can get some solid natural distortion with the gain turned up, or by using the 'Metal' amp voice. Great clean tones as well, the one thing I'll note is it can sound 'quacky' at times, it can make a humbucker equipped semi-hollow sound like a strat.

A great "little" amp!

By Steve Wissink from Wisconsin on July 12, 2021 Music Background: Beginner

First off, I must say Sweetwater support, especially Stephen Oppenheim, has been great! I ordered this amp on a holiday and it still shipped lightning fast!

The Champion 20 is a great "little" amp! It has all the bells and whistles I need at this point and the sound is really decent for an 8-inch speaker.

My only half-star ding on the rating is the 'FX Select' control. A control with detents would be a vast improvement. It gets a little tricky to select what effect you want just by watching the LED change color because the arrow on the dial doesn't really match up to the markings on the faceplate...and the positions seem to change depending on if you are going CW vs. CCW.

All in all, I would highly recommend this amp!

One Amp to Rule Them All (Really)

By Dan P from South Portland, Maine on May 4, 2021

I have had many amps over the years, mostly Fender and mostly tube. In the past my experience with solid state was always negative (except the Orange RT35 which I regret selling). I'm not gonna gigging anymore and don't need the 70 watts Fender Baseman tube amp I chose and actually downgraded to the Fender Champion 20 because I needed something small, and quiet enough for home use at night with young kids. It still gets loud enough to play with a bass player or other guitarists over video chat. I thought about the Fender Mustang line but as an IT professional I've see tech obsolescence daily. I didn't want anything that needed firmware updates or won't connect with whatever cell phone I may own 10 years from now.

No one can beat Fender at clean amp sounds. I traded in a Supro Blues King 8 at my local guitar store and came home with this amp. Although there's many amp voices and special fx, I find myself using Fender Champ for some dirt and 65 Deluxe for clean. I switch between Spring Reverb and Slap Delay effects. For the type of music I play (oldies, rockabilly, and Johnny Cash style country) I don't need to switch between clean/gain or turn fx on/off mid song.

I like how the power cable us removable and the same three prong cable as a computer. If you need a longer one they are online. I also like how the fx are built in. Living in a 100 year old house, with LED bulbs in every light, and dinner switches in every room as well as playing a hollow body guitar always resulted in noise in my signal chain making me go insane. This amp is quiet and I would record with it.

Only complaints are minor: makes a pop sound training off which is notoriously common with solid state amps either on, off, or both... And no built in tuner like the competition.

Verdict this... amp is a hidden gem in the Fender line. If you prefer traditional amp interface go with this over a Fender Mustang.

Great Little Amp

By Sweetwater Customer on February 24, 2021

I am not in a band at the moment, so I don't need serious amplification... just a decent practice amp. This little Champ foots the bill and then some! It's got some pretty decent effects built-into it. So much so that I had to figure out how to plug it directly into my Porta-studio for recording—and I did. Only problem is it is a but noisy, which is of no surprise considering the transistors. What else to say? You can't gig with it (not with a full band, at least), but it's not meant for that. However, if you need a great practice amp with decent built-in effects (which eliminates having to drag out the pedalboard), I can't recommend this Champ 20 enough.

A True Champion !

By Peter A. Markellos from Villas, NJ on November 22, 2020 Music Background: Played for 55 years.

First of all, shout out to Caleb Lowery, who has been very kind to me over there at Sweetwater. I ordered this beautiful beast on Nov 19, 2020, and it was on my porch, this morning Nov 22, when I woke up. I was very happy, but when I unpacked it, and started to jam, I was overwhelmed with great joy at how it sounds. I didn't expect it to be this wonderful. Of course it won't cut drums, or a concert hall, but it can knock the neighbors outa bed. I've been a guitar player since 1964, and I've had Marshall stacks, Twins, Vox... but this is a practice amp that makes my crappy Indo-Tele deluxe sound awesome. Last April I bought the Tele and a lousy, nasty, no good for nothin' boss Katana MKII 50W, Which I hated since I played my first note thru that punk. I have been frustrated and completely uninspired for 7 months because of it. But, today with this Fender Champion 20, I've already written 3 songs. My guitar, now at last, sounds like a guitar instead of a sawmill from hell.
I understand that the Katana is probably great for metal and death metal stuff, but I just want to play something pleasing to my own ears, and the Champion does that. Thank you, Caleb and Sweetwater.

Almost Perfect

By Paul Andreason from Fitchburg, MA on November 14, 2020

This is the first real amp I ever bought. I've been playing almost 3 years and am developing into a decent living room guitarist. I seldom use this amp now, as I now have Marshall and Vox tube amps. I used this amp exclusively for about a year, but now it's my grab-n-go amp when getting together to jam with a buddy.

First, the negative. The higher gain tones aren't great. Just "fine". Some of the effects are just gimmicky due to the lack of adjustability. There's a rather loud POP when turning off - they all do that apparently.

The positives? Basically everything else considering what it is, but I just want to focus on one thing. The first 6 settings on the voicing knob are perfect. This little amp comes really close to the classic Fender amp tones, but at living room volumes. Even the expensive Fender tube amps this is emulating can't do what they do at low volume. Using a Squier Strat, it sounded good, but now when I use it I'm playing a Fender or a Gibson, and with a nicer guitar this thing really sings. For that alone, in such a convenient package and at such a low price, this is easily worth 5 stars. And it has classic Fender design - it both looks and sounds the part.

For a starter amp? Just buy it. It's great. And as you get better and inevitably upgrade? Keep it. It's the perfect grab-n-do amp that small enough to go almost anywhere.

Excellent Practice Amp

By Bill Rodgers from Lakewood, CO, USA on November 10, 2020 Music Background: Hobbyist

If you're new to the electric guitar and want to experiment with effects and make practicing more fun, this is a great amp. For the cost, it provides a stunning array of new sounds to learn about. And this is a gateway amp into the larger world of Fender Champion amps. If you buy one of the bigger Champions later on, you'll already know how to set it up to get the sound/effects you want. I love it.

Blown Away!

By John Scott on October 17, 2020

Wonderful sounding practice amp with great effects, and it's deceptively loud for its size. I also own a Champion 100, I got this for a friend to plug into when we play together, and the tone on the 20 is just as nice as it's bigger brother. Feels solid, looks great, fills the room with great sound. Don't be scared to buy this amp.

Amazing what you can get for a hundred bucks. I bought it for a grandson who wanted to learn guitar sat in the back room for a couple of years never played took it out to the jam house and wow real close on the tweed ,blackface, British, and metal models I run the headphone jack to another amp if I need more volume. Effects were better than expected as well.

Fender Champion 20watt combo amp

By Wally Booher from Dublin Ohio on August 3, 2020

I am a former player and I have just picked up my new guitar and have started to play again, I bought a Gretsch Streamliner in Torino Green with a Fender 20 watt amp. I have always known that Gretsch guitars are the best sounding, but when I hooked it up to my Fender amp I was actually blown away by the sound that I was hearing coming from this wonderful amp the sound was absolutely perfect, for an amp of this size it's just absolutely beautiful, crisp and clean and clear sound like this is the kind that comes from an amp of much larger amp I am totally satisfied with this amp I have the best amp that I could have ever bought it's the GREATEST!!!!!!!!

This is a Great Amp

By Sweetwater Customer on July 14, 2020

As a beginner guitarist, this Fender Champion amp was a fantastic, and extremely affordable purchase. I've been using it everyday for the past week with my black Danelectro 59m Nos+ and with the different amp voicings, and effects it's fun to tinker with the sound, as well as have a nice clean sound to practice now.

Decent little bedroom amp

By Don Lessnau from MI on July 1, 2020

I'm partial to the Champ series. I have a 40 and have been using it for years. The 20 is a good amp. Nice features. It's a very good amp bedroom or small room. Would have been nice to just have a clean channel but there's at least a dozen different voicings plus a dozen effects. Great value for the money.

By Reilly on May 21, 2020 Music Background: Music producer & Singer-songwriter

I've been playing acoustic/electric guitar for over a decade and would definitely recommend this amp. It's simple, easy to use, comes with great effects and has amazing sound quality. It's especially great for beginners who want something inexpensive and straightforward with no directions needed. It works great for both my acoustic-electric fender and my fender strat. Totally worth the expense and a great addition to my home studio!!

Great amp, better customer service

By Chuck Barber from Lexington, GA on May 14, 2020 Music Background: Not a beginner, but not real good.

I wanted a new amp. I just play at home so a 20 watt amp is fine. It arrived today and sounds great. I am very pleased.

The Fedex shipping was weird. First promised on Monday, that changed on Saturday to delivery on Sunday.

On Sunday it didn't arrive. Sunday evening Fedex said there was no delivery time scheduled.

On Monday i sent Ashton Vaudt at Sweetwater a note.

He started looking into it and wrote me back when Fedex did schedule delivery. This time for Wednesday.

Well, it showed up on Thursday. But it's here so all is well.

Ashton, however, is great. I ordered a guitar — one of the backordered Epiphones — and Ashton explained the process and that it might be awhile given the pandemic. He handled the amp gone astray very well.

I have no doubt but that i have tried his patience, however, he has been nothing but friendly and professional.

I will certainly want to work with Ashton again, likely a mixed blessing for Ashton.

He did a great job representing Sweetwater.

Thank you!

They let me play different music styles just by rotating the knob. And the effects are well thought! Very useful and varied, also very Easy to setup. The perfect jack of all trades!

Great tone, several basic effects for any sound, great value. I highly recommend this amp for home, practicing and jamming.

By Sarah Edstrom from OR on November 19, 2019

I ordered this amp mostly for home use. It has everything I was looking for and more. Great combo amp has different tones and basic effects to choose from to match whatever type of song you're playing and sounds amazing. Seems to turn up pretty well although I haven't tested the highest volume but sounds great half way, can't imagine it wouldn't sound great all the way. Has way more power then I would have thought with a great doesn't take up much room size. Highly recommend this powerful little amp.

Affordable Practice Amp with Muscle

By Scott from Fort Wayne, IN on October 15, 2019 Music Background: piano, vocals, self-taught guitar

I play for relaxation and stress relief, and this amp is all I need. It packs a nice punch in a small package without sacrificing sound quality. I find myself playing better and with less fret noise (I enjoy using it with my Ovation Elite acoustic). I don't use the delay much but thoroughly enjoy the deep sounds the other options bring; I really like the chorus and reverb. The only complaint I have is I'm too lazy to become an awesome guitarist. I don't have any 1/8" headphones, so I'm going to pick up an adapter for my current headphones (i'm... frugal). Pack your lunch for a month and use the savings to buy this amp! I have no regrets... other than being lazy.

Good practice amp

By LAWRENCE SMITH from CA on September 16, 2019 Music Background: Playing guitar, slide and bass for 50 years for pay but mostly for free (except for when I have to buy an amp).

I bought this to replace one I gave my son who recently bought a condo and where he can't play his Mesa Boogie amp. I like this amp better and a couple of other similarly priced modeling amps by another mfg. I would recommend this amp for a practice amp. Not sure it would work for a venue any larger than a small cafe, but then, this is a practice amp. It has good options for amp modeling and effects. I use it in the bedroom to play along with commercials while watching TV. Sometimes I think it is my best sounding amp!

My living room is probably as big a stage as I will ever play on and the Champion 20 really satisfies my needs. The voices and effects are really good. It is simple to operate and has plenty of volume. I started to get the Champion 100, but after hearing me play my neighbors convinced me the 20 would suffice. Sales engineer Zach Smith was courteous and professional. I look forward to doing more business with Sweetwater.

Fantastic Amp for the Home

By James on May 13, 2019 Music Background: Active Musician

I wasn"t even in the market for a little studio amp, but after playing this guy in store I knew I just had to take him home!

Great sound for a small speaker. The sound is dynamic and full of range. The amp emulations are very good and can get you in the ballpark at a turn of the dial. The built in effects sound remarkably good considering the price point, and the amp even has a headphone jack, too.

As an at home practice amp or even a workable amp for an at home jam or small coffee shop gig, you really can"t do much better. Fender knocked it out of the park with this one, and I personally prefer this simplified amp over its cousin the Mustang. Get one! You will not be disappointed.

Low Cost, No Fuss, Good Starter Effects

By Sweetwater Customer from Fort Wayne on May 3, 2019

I purchased the amp for my teenage son that's been doing acoustic for a couple of months and wanted to get into electric too. For about the price of one pedal, you get it all in one. The other way to get this versatility would be a multi-effects pedal which would still need an amp or to hook everything up to his computer and deal with figuring out what software to use and figuring out which sounds to mess around with. What sold me was that we can just plug it in and it works. No menus to get lost in and plenty of sounds to get my son started.

Demo bargain

By Guitardude62 from Auburn, NY on March 10, 2019 Music Background: Blues-blues based rock/hard rock long time gigger

Bought two demos... 1 for me , 1 for a local non-profit kids music/band performing group that does fund raising.
I'm a veteran player in my 50's & love decent bargain & pawn shop finds, mid-priced working man models, off the beaten path amps & gear, guitar show seller, gear junkie, etc.. I was blown away by the tone, volume, and versatility of this little monster. I prefer tube amps, but I'm no snob. Instant gratification with minimal knob twisting. This ain't your daddy's Champ. After 10 minutes of testing the various amp sounds & effects, I had to go for the shred. Holy crap, low end chunk, sustain, great reverb/delay. Feeling Eddie/Lynch/Satch-ish 80''s spooging? Fun! Inspiring. Loud & the speaker took the volume & low end very well. Sleeper in my opinion. Mic it at a gig.

Great for the price

By Eric Pingel from Pennsylvania on February 21, 2019

Sounds great!
Main criticisms: you need to mostly rely on the voice selector for sounds, and it doesn't respond like a normal amp, in that the Marshall channel will sound (with low gain and volume) like a dirty Marshall, so when adjusting tones, rather than adjust gain, vol, or EQ, I mostly find myself changing to a new voice, especially when trying to play at a low/practice level. That said, each voice sounds quite good, reverb sounds pretty nice. I don't use the other effects much, the potential volume is pretty good, if playing live it will probably compete alright against a drum, but not great.
Could use an attenuation knob and maybe a 3- rather than 2-band EQ, but a very solid amp for the price.

Great Amp

By Mike H. from Anaconda, MT on December 24, 2018 Music Background: Intermediate

I"ve always been more of an acoustic kind of guy, but I took the plunge on a Firefly ES 335 guitar. After that came the amp purchase decision, waaaay too many choices! I kept the range to under $150 and read a gazillion reviews and got it down to two, the Fender Champion 20... and the Fender Mustang 20... At that point the price difference was irrelevant, it finally came down to the fact I really didn"t need or want all of the effects and messing with software on the Mustang. I"m really glad I bought the Champ! As soon as the amp arrived I plugged in and fired it up, WOW Unbelievable sound out of that small box! I"m very happy with my purchase. When I ran my purchase by my brother-in-law, who owns about 50 guitars and builds very high-end amplifiers, he said that I definitely made the right decision.

Regarding buying from Sweetwater, they had a very high recommendation and now I see why! Great follow up on shipping, while I never actually spoke with Derek , he was on top of things both by email and phone (who does that!). I actually received it early. The amp was packed very well and even included some stickers AND candy! Keep up the good work, Sweetwater!

Fender Champion 20

By Just Dave from Southeast Mexico on December 13, 2018 Music Background: Guitar enthusiast Who’s been playin’ on and off since 1996

After a 10 year span away from guitar playing, I wanted an affordable little amp to play home. I got retired from gigging and changed to stress relieving guitar playing. To be honest, I originally wanted the Fender Frontman. So, one day in 2017, my wife and
I had a day off from work and I asked her to go with me to the guitar store (then a Fender dealer). I tried two guitars (a cool Strat and a nice Gretsch), but they didn"t have the Frontman amp, so, the sales person plugged them into this tiny little amp. And I really liked how GOOD it sounded. The next month, I walked into the store and bought it. Why? Because it was inexpensive, it"s lightweight and I wanted an amp with some built in FX. I play it mostly with headphones, because it can get really loud for home playing. I played a worship gig at church and it just sounded great! Currently, my rig is this: guitar to Boss ME-6 (yeap, the very same fro: the early 90s), which I set up for OD and Chorus (and sometimes with Compressor, EQ and delay); BUT reverb and delay are fixed on the amp. These FX are pretty decent. I dialed the last "voice" (metal) with gain at nearly 0 (tweak the volume to compensate this). Set yours like this and roll your guitar"s volume down and you can get some nice clean tones. For soloing, crank it up and kick some OD in and you"ll be wailing! Bottom line(s): you can get some of the best clean tones out of it. Overdrives are good enough to play only with it (I tend to play 60s Brtitish settings a lot) but I just prefer the last metal setting. It lies under the desk and it"s just perfect for home practice, but also for small gigs and if you"re a one-man band, this is for you, because of the auxiliary jack, I plug my iPad and jam along with some guitar backing tracks. It"s an all around amp that won"t let you down. Get one, it won"t disappoint you.

Best practice amp

By Sweetwater Customer on November 14, 2018

I have a vintage twin reverb but that thing is way to loud to be played at night in an apartment or house with other people there, so I was looking for a small practice with good clean tone. The amp has a lot of volume and I am blown away with how good the clean channels are and the amp models. I don't use the metal settings because I have pedals to use instead. The on board settings are also really good. The reverb and delay are what I expect from fender. The only on board preset that I'm not crazy about it the flanger setting. I definitely recommend this amp as a practice amp or for a small venue, like a coffee shop or chapple, to anyone.

Highly recommend

Fender Champion 20

By Alex Wood (Woody) from Richmond, VA on September 30, 2018 Music Background: Blues Guitarist

I'm 59 years old and this is the most fun I've had for... since I took Lizzy to the senior prom back in 77. When I first plugged in I was disappointed, it sounded tinny and the speaker sounded boxy on the clean setting, typical solid state. Within about 5 minutes the speaker seemed to break in, shockingly the boxiness was gone, still not sure how that happened, and with some fiddling with the gain and volume it started to deliver some very lush tube like blues tones in the blackface and tweed settings that cleaned up pretty nicely when I rolled off the guitar volume. I usually play though one or two Fender 68 Deluxe Reverbs. My initial mistake setting the Champ 20 was to expect to be able to set it just like I do on the Deluxe: Vol. 6 Treble 6 and Bass 5 which are my clean settings with my Strats. If you do this on the Champ 20 it will sound radically different, way too bright and very little bottom, but once I played around a bit I was eventually was able to get a pretty good duplicate of my live tube amp sound and it also takes pedals very well. Great for practice and it's loud enough to get over most drummers for rehearsals or small gigs.

Without a doubt the best money I have ever spent on a piece of gear. Super light and portable...sounds way bigger than it is. The tweed and blackface voices are terrific and the spring reverb is perfect. I own a fair collection of tube amps and still play them when we do a rare gig but I find myself playing this the most. It"s important to remember that if you switch voices or guitars you have to tweak the eq. Sweetwater rep Brandon Eden was very helpful as always!

Worth The Money

By Donald from Baltimore on March 29, 2018

I gave this amp four stars instead of five because it is a pratice amp. As a practice amp it is really nice. I'm an analog kind of guy and love transister and tube amps. This amp is a modeler but has limited effects and amp sims. That is great for me. The amp sims are nice (I use the Blackface). The effects are limited to reverb, reverb+chorus, tremolo and delay. The amp has only one channel but makes good use of it. It does get loud for a small practice amp. Among the crowded field of small amps the Champion 20 stood out for me.

Fender's little Champion

By Robert Thompson from Belding, MI on December 23, 2017 Music Background: I've been playing since 1963.

I bought this is a practice amp to put at the place we practice where we don't need the power. With all the features on this amp and how loud it got, boy was I blown away. I think I could take this to a small venue and use it in place of much heavier amps. I also have a Fender Rumble Amp which is lightweight and very powerful. It gives me new reason to look at Fender amps.

Great practice amp for the cost

By Steve from Wisconsin on November 15, 2017

I purchased this Fender for my son's first amp. Although I didn't want to spend much, it had all the features I was looking for- a wide variety of 'Voicings' (from crystal clean to highly distorted) and a very wide variety of effects. My first practice amp (long ago) did not have any effects (not even reverb), so I was especially interested in getting my son an amp with some built-in effects. Although most of the effects are too exaggerated/extreme when the FX Level knob is turned past 2 or 3, they sound good when the levels are kept low.

Similarly, the speaker really starts to break up when the Gain Level is pushed too far, but overall, I am very pleased with the sounds it is capable of producing. I own a Marshall half-stack and am particularly fond of the "British" Voicing- very nice.

As part of a modest starter rig for my son, I combined this amp with an Epiphone Les Paul Vintage Edition (VE). This is a very economical setup, and I recommend both. For a small practice/first amp, this Fender is hard to beat for the cost.

this amp is great for home studio, or even small stages, has tweed and blackface tones pretty darn close.takes pedals very well, although i prefer the bug muff fuzz over distortion for this amp, can get a les paul sound with a stratocaster,as far as a growly type sound (niel young) and it dont weigh 80 pounds!! overall very good little amp, power switch could be in front but no deal breaker at all.

NICE LITTLE AMP...TO A POINT

By Vince DeLuca from New England on October 14, 2017 Music Background: Lots of years and lots of mistakes...

My regular amp is an Orange RT35. A very good sounding Solid State amp. It is a tad heavy though so I bought the Fender Champion 20 for practice and even some recording direct. I have to admit I like the sounds and the convenience of on board effects models. With that I thought I would make one easy tweak to help it sound even better. I bought a Jensen Vintage Ceramic 8 in, 25 watt, 8 ohm speaker. I figured an easy and not too costly tweak to make it better...and it would have been if not for FENDER. I found disconnecting the pos/neg wires easy as they were not soldered. They were the slip-on type. Good. I unscrewed the 4 bolt screws merely by using a short-length Phillips screw driver. Good. But lo and behold...FENDER DECIDED TO CEMENT THIS SPEAKER FRAME TO THE FRONT BAFFLE BOARD!!! A cheap move to make the amp quieter by unorthodox means. Shame on Fender. No matter how I tried to jar the frame loose...no go.
For me to have loosened the speaker it would have most likely caused me to destroy the front board. Back everything went. I will use the amp till it no longer functions...and then merely toss it in the garbage. Live and learn.

Best Sounding 8" Combo-Buy Two,Go Stereo!

By Ken O from USA on October 14, 2017

This little amp is priced perfectly, EXCELLENT for a small stereo set-up. I have a very portable Katana head with internal speaker that is my pride and joy,an essential part of my recording studio set-up, so I needed a less valuable option for general jamming. I recently plugged into a 40w version at a rehearsal complex and was very pleased with the genuine Fender clean tone it provided. It really took my pedal board well although the onboard FX were really good, too. Wow, okay Fender...Got my attention. Anyway, I realized a small stereo rig would be best for my Strat-UniVibish,Hendrix/Trower tone-flow. These amps sound way better than the price point would indicate. Either get two for a stereo rig or one 40w model, both choices are perfect for practice and small gigs. These amps are top-notch, with all of the sounds a working musician needs, and nothing else. Pure and simple!

Nice little amp

By Dennis from MS on August 2, 2017 Music Background: 40+ years playing guitar.

Ahh, the wonders of electronics. This is a great little amp. Several modeling options and a nice selection of on-board effects. Fender quality-tough construction, well-put-together. Certainly more than enough juice for household use.
Sweetwater is a pleasure to deal with. No hassle transactions, service after the sale. The product arrived on-time and undamaged.

Many solutions in a compact amp.

By Mitch from New Haven on July 23, 2017 Music Background: Pro recording engineer, guitarist.

I loved the online description of the amp, and it seemed to be just what I needed not only for practice, but for recording as well. The 10 amp models are spot-on, the built in effects are just what's needed without a lot of hokum, and the sound is fabulous! I really couldn't be happier even if it were more than the $99 price tag. I have a Blues Jr. that I love, but I also have a need for an all-in-one package with a headphone jack. The 8" speaker has great tone at any volume. It's a far cry from the little Champ I had back in the 70's!
The only drawback is that no company makes a cover for it (yet). A seamstress friend solved that problem rather quickly. Lastly (and this is being totally honest), Sweetwater's sales and customer service staff are unrivaled in the industry. This is my third purchase from them and their attention to detail and follow-ups are much appreciated.

Sweetwater the place!

By Larry Nevius from Sulphur, LA on May 10, 2017

Sweetwater once again really shows how customer service should be. You could buy this amp anywhere but you'll never get this service anywhere else and the price is competitive with anyone.

So the amp, well it was a gift for my son in law whom is just starting with the electric guitar. He seems to really like it, as it has a few effects and he can plug a headphone as well as MP3 type stuff. So all in all a home run for some one practicing at the house or playing with some friends.

Surprised

By Gary Reilly from Pennsylvania on April 22, 2017

I was very suprised with how this little amp performs and the many different sounds you can get from it. It makes a great practice amp and would be good miked up for small gigs. Ballsy little bugger for sure.
I took it to a jam session and it held its own with other amps of similar 20 watt size. It's a keeper.

Awesome amp!

By John Parrish from Bismarck, ND on April 20, 2017

This is literally the best amp I've ever had. Granted, I've had about 6 or 7, all practice amps. Just got my first tube amp a few months ago (Epiphone valve junior with mods and different tubes) and it barely gets played since I got this champion 20. Theres a number of different amp voices on this, but the princeton and 60's british are my favorites. This amp does it all from clean to metal. The effects are all useful with the exception of the auto wah imo. If you're a home player like me, or just want a decent practice amp to stick somewhere, I don't think you can get anywhere near this sound quality and versatility anywhere else.

Great Choice for Home Practice Amp

By Paul from Los Angeles on April 13, 2017 Music Background: Long time hobbyist, guitar and bass

I was pleasantly surprised with the full rich sound of the amp. First, the volume is perfect for my small studio setting, the digital effects are great for me, and the amp voicing control knob which adds texture is a great feature.

Fender hit a home run with this little amp, Fender Champion 20. It's has all the tone controls you need, in a small footprint and price.

Wow...Just...Wow.

By Steve Maurice from Rio Rancho, NM on March 25, 2017

I needed a small practice amp to use in my home office, and after an insane amount of research for a $ purchase, I chose the Champion 20. I can't believe how far modelling amps have come. This thing models the Fender amps extremely well, the others maybe not so much. But I am giving it 5 stars because I wanted a practice amp that sounded like my Super Sonic, and it exceeded my expectations. It also takes pedals surprisingly well, something I was worried about with a modelling amp. Does it sound exactly like my Super Sonic? Of course not. But it also costs about $900 less and won't melt your ears off in a small room, although it is surprisingly loud. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Great All included Beginner Amp

By Gary E. Steiger from Saint Augustine Florida on December 14, 2016 Music Background: beginner

I just picked my first electric guitar about 6 months ago. I was looking for a Amp and wanted it quick. Not knowing anything about Amps except they allow the guitar to be amplified I bought this Fended Champion 20. I been using it and very happy with the size and portability not to mention the big sound. I just got another guitar my 2nd and started to entertain Foot pedals. I had a couple pedals in my cart and just seconds before checkout I remembered all those knobs on my Amp. I revisited the Amp and actualy read all the knob functions. That's when I was Blown Away. This amp did what the pedals I had ready to buy does. I don't think I have to tell you how pleased I was. I already had the effects I wanted built into the amp and saved some real money. If I do anything now it will be to buy another, larger Fender Combo Amp with higher Watage.

Big Mistakes Do Come in Small Packages

By Sweetwater Customer on September 2, 2016 Music Background: Intermediate Guitarist

Bought this as a practice amp to complement a Roland MicroCube (awesome) and a Peavey Valveking Royal 8 (good little tube amp). This unit is clearly the worst. Emits a noticeable hum on any amp setting. Tried it with single coil and humbucker guitars - the sound is on the thin side compared to the other amps. The Tweed and Blackface amp models are passable (its a Fender, they better be). Disappointed, wish I had gone for the other amp I was considering, the Fender Mustang.

Puppy with a Bark

By J.R. from Hickory Withe, Tennessee on July 11, 2016 Music Background: Trumpet for years. On the learning curve with Strat Elite.

I wanted a light out-the-door amp to go to a friend's house to jam or take to guitar lessons. At 12 lbs, the Champion 20 was it and economical, too, at around a $100. My everyday amps are a Champion 100 (40 lbs) and a Super Champ X2 FSR (26 lbs)--- not exactly grab and run amps. I was REALLY amazed at the tone quality and voicing options when I fired it up. A starter or beginners amp? Absolutely! But a light utility amp with good sound and voicing for the experienced when you're on the run for some musical fun. This puppy can growl! Thanks to my personal sales engineer Jeff Jent for his guitar guiding expertise. Oh, and it's a FENDER! 'Nuff said.

Great Little Amp

By Happy Camper from MN on May 17, 2016

I bought this amp at a local pawn shop. It was in mint condition and still under warranty. It was cheap enough and I figured I would just "flip" it and make a few bucks. Well, I got it home, brought in into my studio and turned it on. After a little EQ tweaking and checking out the different settings, I could hardly believe what I had just purchased. This is a very nice amp. I play pro and have nine other, much bigger Fender and Peavey amps that I gig with, so there was a huge measuring stick this little Champion 20 had to compare to. The tiny 8" speaker is exactly what one should expect from it, but plug in headphones and you're right there in Fender territory. But an even bigger surprise was when I connected this amp directly to my board at an outdoors gig two weeks ago, via the headphone jack, panning Left and Right. It was a total mind blower! Coming thru the mains and monitors, this amp was playing with the big boys and sounded as good and in some cases better than anything else I have used over the years. I'm 64 years old and am re-thinking everything I have thought over the years about little amplifiers. This little Champion 20 is definitely a keeper and can definitely run with the big boys when plugged into a board. Simply Amazing!

Sweet little amp!

By Edward Rivera from Bronx, NY on April 6, 2016

I was contemplating purchasing the Fender mustang 1 V2 however i didn't want to have to fuss with having to connect it to a computer and having to figure the software out,i wanted something that offered different tones and effects and was also easy to work with and the Fender Champion 20 does just that.I have only had the Amp for a day and already love it...I do however feel the need to mention that for some reason whenever i shut it off there is a popping sound i hope that this wont be an issue with it getting damaged in the near future, other than that small complaint i think the Fender Champion 20 is a very good little amp.

Perfect small amp

By Richard L. from Kennesaw, GA on March 17, 2016 Music Background: Have played for 50 years

I got this to play along with YouTube on my smart TV in the living room with a reissue Country Gentleman and a Peavey Raptor Strat clone. It has met and exceeded all expectations. Don't limit your thinking by classing it as just a practice amp. Twenty watts is plenty for small gigs. If you need more you can mic it or use the headphone output into a PA. This shuts off the speaker, but internally the effects are stereo, so you gain a spatial effect. The only limitation is that there is no channel switching.

There are a dozen amp emulations—six Fenders and six British (read: Marshall) and "metal"—and a dozen effects combinations. The volume and gain controls yield everything from crystalline cleans, to saturated tweed crunch, to a full-throated roar. Naturally, it won't do everything that a real amp or a better modeler would do, but it sounds very, very good. The effects are basic but well suited to many situations.

I have used it for over a year now and am as pleased with it as I was at first. I have never needed to set the volume above 4. I have recommended it and its more powerful 40- and 100-watt relations many times. I think anyone wanting an amp in this power and price range will be more than satisfied.

Awesome!!!

By R. Augie Beuerman from Monticello, In on March 16, 2016

Fender Champion 20 amp

By Sweetwater Customer on February 17, 2016

I feel this is a good home use practice amp that will not blow anyone away but is loud enough. I usually play at around 3 or 4 with the gain around 5 because I am just trying to concentrate on learning after not having played guitar for many years. I liked the availability of having the sound effects built in as they add a fun dimension to playing. The aux. input has been useful for playing along with youtube videos on my phone. This amp can get loud but I don't push it except for a few times when I accidentally turned it up too loud. The only annoying thing is the loud pop that is produced when the amp is shut down. I have another Champion 20 which does the same thing so it is not just this particular amp. The amp is otherwise quiet when being played. Overall I am happy with this amp, it does what I needed an amp to do and has some fun things to play around with in the meantime. Adding a looping pedal would add versatility to a practice session.

Great value.

A Rockin' Little Amp

By Thomas Gustaitus from Pennsboro, WV on December 22, 2015 Music Background: Playing weekends gigs for 50 years

I saw the reviews and thought I would give this little amp a try. Now that our duo are playing smaller gigs and we're in our mid 60' I needed a small amp. The Fender Champion 20 turned out to be that amp. Light weight, very good sound & the right price helped sell this Rockin' Little Amp. The fast shipping helped too, just 2 days to my house.
I set my controls on Tweed and Spring Reverb, keeping both volume controls on 3 and mic the amp with a SM57. I was looking for a sweet 50's rock/country sound and I got it. Just set the bass & treble for you kind of guitar and play !!!!

Champ20 vs. Mustang

By James M from Tucson AZ on December 11, 2015 Music Background: semi-pro, in bands since the '80s.

It's actually a fun amp. I've gigged with this amp set high on a step ladder. It's surprisingly loud, especially with a hot pickup. I've used it with an autoharp, a dobro, and a tele, and sometimes for elect.piano (it's not great for that).
High marks for this amp, but that said, I think anyone considering the $99 Champion 20 should check out the $119 Mustang I, which eats this amp for breakfast and lunch on sound and features.

Great beginners amp

By Sweetwater Customer on November 18, 2015

Can't beat the versatility for the price - has really helped me find the sounds I'm looking for out of my Strat and given me a really good idea of what to look for in a tube amp when I'm ready to upgrade. Can't imagine ever getting rid of this little baby either. At 12 lbs and with its own effects it's so easy to just throw it in the backseat and jam over to a buddy's house for an hour or two. Stoked!

The Champion is a great amp for practicing at home and is way loud enough for the average room.....it has enough latitude in the settings to make me sound better than I am.....the only drawback is the loud pop when powering off even if all the amp and guitar knobs are all the way down.....other than that it is fine.....

I was very surprised by the sound of this little amp. The effects are pretty awesome, not over done like some amps with onboard effects. For a 20 watt Amp. it gets pretty loud too. I would definitely recommend this Amp for practice or even mic'ed live.

Nice little practice amp. Good value for beginner or practice. You wont use this for live performance, but you wouldnt expect to anyway before you bought it. It is a nice sounding practice amp with several digital effects, headphone jack, and input. Great value for hauling around or jamming in the bedroom. I would definitely recommend for a student or personal use.

Great amp!

By Josh Yount from Bakersfield, MO on August 6, 2015

I "upgraded" to this amp from a Fender Mustang 1 because I wanted to shape my own sound rather than select from a group of preset amp tones. I was not disappointed. I really like the way I can select effects (or none of them) and I also like the multiple voices that they s amp has. Also, since I practice with headphones and my iPad (thanks to spotify), I was glad for the 1/8" headphone jack rather than the 1/4" jack seen on other models. This amp is also pretty powerful when I'm not using headphones. I gave it 4 stars because it doesn't have an onboard tuner like the Mustang 1; I suppose I'm just spoiled! It also has no clean setting, but I can get it pretty close to a clean sound. Anyway, top notch service--as always-- from Sweetwater. Sweetwater is the best company in the industry as far as I'm concerned!

Shorted out

By BRUCE BRILL from MARGATE, FL on August 2, 2015 Music Background: Life long amature musician

Got the amp to have as a spare. I noticed that when I turned it off it would make a sparking or crackling sound. I figured maybe it would be ok, but eventually, when I turned it on it made the same noise, then didn't come on at all. Obviously got a defective one. But, Sweetwater makes it very simple to return or exchange.

The Champ 20 has plenty of features as far as the sound available, so on that score it is fine; the only thing --it doesn't have an on board tuner. The size is perfect because you can put it on a table or desk and it sits at the perfect height to make adjustments.

I going to exchange it for the Line 6 15w. I will write another review, when I get the Line 6. I already know it has a tuner built in.

Beginning player who just wanted something more portable to travel with between two residences. This little guy was economical and fit the bill. Don't expect a lot in the gain as it seems to really break up past the mid range setting. Thus the 4.5 rating. All the other features of this amp are great and it is really user friendly. Works well with added pedals and would highly recommend for the beginner, practices and small venues but mostly appreciate the price and portability. As always enjoy Sweetwater's service and fast shipping. Thanks to my rep Mark Chapman who always goes the extra mile in finding the answers to my newbie questions!

By curt santner from Sheridan, WY on August 11, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist

I have a Champion 40 that I am very happy with. I purchased the Champion 20 seeking a smaller, more portable practice amp but the sound is nowhere near as clear and defined as the Champion 40. The overdrive is not very good at all on the Champion 20. For $80 more, buy the 40, it is a much better amp with a greater tonal range. The big 12" speaker really makes a difference when compared with the 8" speaker of the Champion 20.

By Dewey Jacks from Bluffton, IN on June 18, 2014 Music Background: Beginner/amateur musician

This is a great little practice amp,and for what you get,it sounds pretty doggone good with the 8" speaker. Great features for the price, and very easy to use. My favorite effect is the Tremolo turned up to about 5,...puts you in mind of a tweed Vibro Champ when you have it on the "tweed" setting. This would also make a great first amp for a student/beginner and I would highly recommend it for that purpose as well as practice. Much higher quality than the Frontman 10G amps of similar size. Then,as always,...that top notch Sweetwater service.

This amp met my needs. I don't need to blow the roof off the house, or my wife will blow me out of the house.(You don't mess w/retired school teachers). But it has more knobs, bells, & whistles to keep me occupied for along time. If I want to get louder, I just need to go outside when the weather gets more decent. The price was reasonable. Again thanks to the tech that helped me.

I used to play in a group many years ago in my teens. Sold my Gibson SG Std and Fender Deluxe in my 40's after I found I picked up my guitar and played less and less. Was whining to my wife about how I regretted it so she bought me a guitar for Christmas. I needed an amp to see i could get back to playing again. She had gotten me a Mustang II which I thought was too small and had to many gadgets. Was going to get a Deluxe, Hot Rod, or Twin (which is what I always wanted) but decided not to make the investment. This is a great little practice Amp with plenty of versatility and power for playing around the house and entertaining yourself. Don't expect it to be a tube amp but it does very well for practice.

I own a few tube amps and needed a low volume practice amp, I also wanted some "fender" sound. My socks are knocked off for the money. This thing is a blast. Plus I turn it on more than I would a tube amp, no warm up and so on, plus some fun new sounds for myself.
Packs a punch if you want it too also.
