Call Me Crazy!
First off let start by saying that I have no credentials to boast about like so many others that try and convey on their gear reviews. That being said, what I do have is the ability to hear great tones and sound. I bought this speaker to put in my Peavey Classic 30, hence the title of this review. I knew that buying a speaker that is almost half the cost of your amp is a risk, but also knew I could always use in a speaker cabinet if I didn't like it in the amp itself. So far after about a 15 hour break-in this Gold sounds great, very articulate highs, searing mids and great balance of bass response that can be both fat or tight without out the muddyness. It's was like removing a pillow from in front of the speaker and really brought this amp to life. I will say that for high gain I was disappointed at first, so I did some research and found that this speaker does require break-in which I was a little skeptical, but it is totally true. The more hours on this Gold the better it keeps sounding with the high gain applications and overall tone. Other Mods to the C30 before the speaker upgrade include Russian 7189 (EL84), Tun Sol 12AX7 tubes and MOD spring reverb tank. This 30 watt amp is a beast with this tube/speaker combination and plays stupid loud if needed. So far all of my pedals sound amazing, to name a few (Keeley modded BD-2, DS-1, MT-2 & Catalinbread DLS MKIII). Also contact Mr Drew Foster my sales engineer at Sweetwater if you need anything, he has a wealth off knowledge and would be able to help you with anything. Thanks for the awesome customer service and super fast shipping. Would have given 5 stars but cost is a factor, so it is anything but cheap and at the end of the day it is only a speaker!
