Spectacular rock voice for small wattage tube amps with one little problem

These low-wattage, Alnico, British-voiced Celestion speakers are a marvel. From day one you will enjoy the tonality and clarity. As they age, they mature into a more refined tone. I use with a Blackstar Studio 10 KT88 amp. I was replacing the mediocre-at-best Seventy 80 that came with the combo. That same speaker comes with many amp vendors in combos if you don't specifically buy something with more character. The Seventy 80 was tolerable for a few months. But I needed something more interesting. I research the available current speaker lines. I've always favored American-voice amps with British-voiced speakers. I did my homework. There's always the Vintage 30 for classic rock (and much cheaper), but I wanted to try the latest greatest. So I bought a Celestion Blue 12-inch 15-watt Alnico guitar speaker from Sweetwater when they were slightly discounted from their top dollar price.

I knew I would love the speaker and it exceeded my expectations. I simply never had a speaker of that category before. But there was one little problem. I blame myself and certainly neither Sweetwater or Celestion. The Blackstar Studio 10 combo can was sized for the very thin Seventy 80. With the Blue hacked to fit the KT88 tube would smash right into the magnet. The fit wasn't even close.

I looked around for an affordable cab worthy of such a snooty speaker. I settled for VHT who had a black tolex 12x1 cab that fit the Celestion Blue 12" Alnico. I left the Seventy 80 out for now. Maybe I'll put a Vintage 30 or something in the cab for variety eventually. The KT88 and 12ax7 preamp provide a dreamy signal out to the cab with the Blue in it.The more I play the more the speaker opens up and develops an even more distinct personality. It's rock all the way through to my ears.

Buy this speaker if you can fit it, or plan on getting a cab too. My bad.

superior upgrade for Vox AC15

I have the Vox AC15 Custom that came with an American made 75 watt Warehouse speaker. I had a really hard time getting the classic Vox sound I wanted, so I changed it out for a British made Celestion Blue alnico speaker - 15 watt, which is the recommended wattage for the Vox AC 15. Now I get the classic, British Vox sound without having to fiddle with all the knobs. It's great almost on any tone setting. The 74 watt Warehouse speaker that comes stock in the Vox AC15 Custom is comparatively harsh. The Alnico Blue by Celestion is much fuller in the low range, plenty of chime and breaks up nicely at lower volumes where the Warehouse speaker remains all too clean. I haven't even broken the Blue in yet, but out of the box, it is a far superior sound. Pricey, but worth it.

Breaths new life into a Marshall 62 Bluesbreaker combo

I didn't purchase these speakers at Sweetwater unfortunately, but I have two in my Marshall 62 Bluesbreaker reissue. They are mind blowing. They seem to be tuned just right--very musical speakers. I'm going to purchase two more soon for an external 2x12 cab.

Excellent for a Box AC4C1

Unlike the other reviews, I installed this proxy speaker into an AC4C1. Talk about a tonal difference. It makes this little amp sparkle with tone and presence. I had a few pedals I thought I didn't like until I ran them through this speaker. Everything comes out clear and you can hear the nuance of every note. It is well worth the investment.
