Look at this Amp List!
Each of Carl's amps has been profiled using five distinct studio-standard microphones: a Shure SM57, a Telefunken M80, a Royer R-121 ribbon, an old-school AKG C414 XLS condenser, and a vintage Neumann U-67 tube LDC. The result is 145 stunning profiles. By re-amping tracks through multiple mic profiles of the same model, you can achieve phase-correct mic blends you'd never be able to get in the studio. Here's a breakdown of each amp:
- '59 Fender Bassman: A special handwired reissue 4 x 10-inch. Highly interactive speaker/tube/cab breakup yields gritty power chords to straight-up solo saturation.
- '63 Fender Tremolux: Vintage Blackface-era tone. Sounds great with pedals in front of it.
- '64 Fender Twin Reverb: The American industry standard. Crystal-clear highs and a full-bodied low end. Really shines for rhythm work. Used onstage next to the great Albert Lee.
- '65 Fender Deluxe Reverb: Carl's main practice amp. A little underpowered for full bands, but takes on new life in the Kemper realm.
- '65 Princeton Reverb: "Ground zero" for electric guitar tone. Used on Disney-Pixar's Cars.
- '66 Marshall JTM45: Unique among all Plexis. "There's nothing better for playing the blues," says Carl.
- '66 Fender Showman: A particularly vibey 4 x 6L6 head. It was profiled with the volume set around six, where it "really comes alive," according to Carl.
- '67 Princeton Reverb: An upgraded Mercury Magnetics transformer gives this longtime favorite of Carl's a beefier tone. Can be heard in 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton.
- '68 Marshall JMP 50-watt: "The Holy Grail of distortion amps," gushes Carl. A major contributor to Carl's Essential Blues album, recorded right here at Sweetwater Studios. "A sweet semi-crunch...that saturates nicely at higher levels," adds Carl.
- '69 Marshall Super Lead 100-watt: Very likely the same make, model, and year of amp used by Van Halen and Hendrix. One of Carl's "most valuable amps," it was called "the best hundred-watt Marshall I've ever heard" by guitar icon Joe Bonamassa.
- '63 Vox AC30 (Clean/Dirty): Does Beatles chime to Brian May snarl. "The best one I own," says Carl.
- Bergatone Twin Tone 20: Fat and bluesy German boutique amp — "basically a modded Princeton Reverb on steroids."
- Danelectro Nifty 50: A tiny tone that can be just the ticket for select applications. Used to score Suddenly Susan.
- Dr. Z Carmen Ghia: Minimal controls for a super-pure tone. Run into a 2 x 10-inch open-back cab.
- Dr. Z Z-Luxe: Michael Zaite's one-input deluxe, with the master volume cranked for maximum fatness.
- Dr. Z SRZ-65: Carl's main distortion machine for live use. Takes pedals well.
- Egnater Studio Preamp: Four-channel preamp built by Bruce Egnater himself. Used on The Crow and The Usual Suspects.
- Gibson Falcon: Called "pure honey" by a producer on a Gordon Goodwin record that Carl played on.
- Friedman (Clean/Dirty): Yields crystal cleans to ferocious distortion. Loaded with a pair of Celestion Creamback ceramic 12-inch speakers.
- Hampstead Artist 20+RT: A rare 20-watt head built by Peter Hampstead. Heard on Carl's contributions to Arrested Development.
- '75 Hiwatt 100-watt: Loud and high headroom, but gets a Townsend-like sound when you crank it.
- Mesa/Boogie Studio Preamp: A staple of Carl's home studio. Can be heard on Carl's work for Seinfeld and Married...with Children.
- Shinos Luck 6V: Used by Carl on the 81st Annual Academy Awards, heard by some 43 million viewers. Great cleans. Loves pedals.
- THD Flexi-50: Unique breakup. Nails the "semi-crunch" tone. Used on films from Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol to Star Trek.
- THD Plexi-Mod: Based on a 50-watt Marshall but has much in common with a 4 x 10-inch Bassman. Heard on The Bee Gees' Still Waters album and during Supertramp world tours, circa 1997–2002.
- Trainwreck Climax: Adds a unique character to lead tones; great for Strat solos.
- Vox AC-4 modded: Features upgraded input/output transformers and a 10-inch Celestion Gold speaker.
