Great sounds

The famous Kurzweil Triple Strike Grand Piano is front and center, but the CUP-2 also provides world-class sounds in every category; rich strings and orchestral sounds, realistic electric pianos, drums, basses, guitars and synthesized sounds.

Finally a Digital Piano that Competes with Yamaha

The piano action feels great, and has the response I would expect from an acoustic piano. The sound quality is very clear and has many sounds to choose from. I also like the fact it looks like a real piano. I've seen many different digital pianos in my life and this is the first that I've ever felt OBLIGATED to write a review about.

Perfect marriage of form and function

I had the opportunity to play with the Kurzweil CUP2 while accompanying a friend to buy a piano for her son, who was starting to learn instrument. Having been a classical pianist for many years and recently switching to pop and jazz, I was blown away by this instrument. In researching the possible options (acoustic and digital pianos) prior to my piano-buying outing, I had not come across this as Kurzweil's digital pianos aren't all that well-known. As a digital piano, the CUP2 is not only extremely realistic in touch, the piano sounds are extremely realistic. I have always been drawn to Kurzweil's workstations. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I found out from the salesperson that the sounds are taken from Kurzweil's well-known workstations. Coupled with the 140 watt speakers, every nuance of the piano sounds is given the depth that it deserves. Personally, I felt the EP sounds were a little thin, and has less personality than the acoustic piano sounds, but were great nonetheless. The selection of acoustic and EP sounds doesn't seem extensive, but would probably be what one can expect from a digital piano. The touch is realistic and you can feel the graded hammer action, which goes from heavy (at the low range) to light (at the high range). While it is less heavy than an actual grand piano, the feel of the wooden (not plastic!!) keys mimics the real thing. There is a sound bar that is located all across the 88 keys, giving it a feel of a real acoustic piano, I could find no fault in it. What I like most about the CUP2 is the two headphones out. It makes it easy for an instructor or a parent to listen in on the student's practice session. As far as I am aware, only the Korg has a something similar. The CUP2 not only has the functions of an excellent digital piano, it has the form of one too. In this respect, it beats the other digital pianos hands down. The CUP2 would not look out of place in a posh living room, and its understated black, glossy exterior seems like the perfect expression of its functionalities. Kurzweil really made this marriage of form and function very beautifully. I would have bought this piano for myself if I had the space to accommodate it and if I did not already own a stage piano that meets my gigging needs.
