Iconic Rounded Shoulder Acoustic from Gibson

Celebrating an icon in the world of pre-WWII acoustics, Gibson offers the 1936 Advanced Jumbo. The first of Gibson's round-shouldered dreadnoughts, the Advanced Jumbo has become a sought-after acoustic among collectors and touring players alike. The 1936 Advanced Jumbo features a solid, thermally aged red spruce top and rosewood back and sides — a tonewood pairing legendary for its big volume and rich, full tone. The 1936 also features a beautiful mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard that offers smooth playability and stellar response — a favorite neck among guitarists here at Sweetwater.

Thermal aging makes the difference

The thermal aging process on the 1936 involves subjecting the tonewoods to the perfect level of heat over a carefully selected span of time. Because the red spruce top on the 1936 Advanced Jumbo has been thermally aged, all the impurities and moisture that stunt the overall tone of the wood have been removed, resulting in a sound that is pure and time-worn. The low end is more expansive; the midrange balanced; the high end clean and forward. The 1936 is equally at home in an ensemble or solo performance.

The rounded-shoulder difference

Descending from Gibson's large HG Hawaiian guitar in 1929, and the original "Jumbo," introduced in 1934, the Advanced Jumbo is steeped in Gibson tradition and lauded for its pure, rich tone and impressive volume. With smooth lines, and a curvaceous shape, Advanced Jumbo style guitars invite a close relationship with their respective guitarists. Their body shape makes these guitars easier to hold and more comfortable. The 1936 Advanced Jumbo gives you a meticulous re-creation of a very rare and sought-after guitar from a formative period in Gibson's illustrious history.

1936 Advanced Jumbo Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Iconic rounded-shoulder acoustic offers comfortable playing experience and incredible tone
  • Solid, thermally aged red spruce top and rosewood back and sides deliver balanced, full tone
  • Beautiful mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard offers smooth playability and stellar response
  • Thermal aging removes unwanted moisture and impurities that impede tone and resonance
  • Mother-of-pearl diamonds and arrows on fingerboard off a luxurious touch
  • Waverly tuners are stage-ready and keep you effortlessly in tune

Excellent Gibson

This is a really nice slope shoulder rosewood dreadnought with a long scale neck (longer than a J45). The split diamond fret board and headstock inlays are beautiful and the vintage burst, fire stripe pickguard, and thin finish give it a nice vintage look. It's unique, and just nice to look at! It has its own balanced distinct sound that I describe as tighter and more focused than the classic Martin rosewood sound. Its good for strumming, but I like it best for fingerpicking. Definitely a nice guitar for classic acoustic rock. Though many love the AJ for bluegrass, I go to my square shoulder Martin Dreadnoughts for flatpicking, no contest. I went through my Gibson phase and this 1936 Custom Shop Advanced Jumbo and the Custom Shop 1942 Banner J45 were the only two Gibsons that I kept. They are both fine and unique acoustics.
Many thanks to my sales engineer Jake Barker for his advice and help with getting this fine axe.
