Gibson's Johnny A. Signature Model

Gibson's Custom, Art, Historic division provides an atmosphere for a select group of inspired artisans to carry on Gibson's century-old tradition of creating exquisite, investment quality instruments that represent the highest standards of imaginative design and masterful craftsmanship.

From his years with J. Geils Band front man Peter Wolf to his acclaimed solo albums, Johnny A.'s passion for the guitar is proverbial. Gibson recognized Johnny's talents and created the
Johnny A. Signature Model. The Johnny A. Signature Model combines the best of vintage Gibsons with innovative designs to create a guitar that is pretty unique. The body is completely hollow with a carved maple top. The outer surface is contoured to look and feel like a traditional hollowbody guitar, but the inner back is flat, cutting down on feedback and imparting a bright, snappy response. The custom neck profile and pearl inlays are coupled with more traditional Gibson features such as multi-ply binding, gold hardware, a Bigsby tailpiece, and an ebony fingerboard to create a guitar that's diving headfirst into the future while giving a knowing nod to the past.

The best of the best

The Gibson Johnny A Smith Signature is the finest, best playing and sounding guitar I have ever picked up. The Nashville Custom Shop product is so well built and just exudes class. The Bigsby really adds a great vibe. I am torn...I love to play my JAS and do often...but the increasing value would justify keeping it in the case. I am sure my kids will fight over this beautiful instrument when I'm gone :)

Sweetwater Advice

Greg Baum

This is an entirely hand-built Custom Shop instrument that is a logical evolution of Gibson's electric guitar heritage dating back to 1952. This is a guitar that no other company could have made: unique modern shape that sits well historically alongside the Tal Farlow, the Trini Lopez and the ES335, yet the Johnny A. is none of these. What if the SG and the 335 married and had a baby? Yeah, a semi-hollow body with humbuckers and a Bigsby. Here is a versatile guitar that does country, blues, fusion, rock and funk. Gibson has hit a home run for this new millennium. I particularly like the middle position setting that has a sweet round sound. I like to drop my pinky down and wiggle notes with the Bigsby. Yum!
