The history of Ovation

In 1964 Charlie Kaman set out to revolutionize the acoustic guitar by compiling a group of aerospace engineers to create something guitar players had never seen or heard before. They discovered that the flat backs of modern day acoustics actually hindered the balance and projection of the guitar. And so, the roundback designs found on Ovation guitars were born. As Charlie himself put it, "in helicopters, the engineers spend all their time trying to figure out how to remove vibration. To build a guitar, you spend your time trying to figure out how to put vibration in."

Mid-depth body balances sonic projection and playing comfort

Ovation guitars possess one of the more intriguing acoustic-electric guitar designs you'll find at Sweetwater. This Celebrity Standard Plus CS24 sports Ovation's mid-depth body style which helps enhance projection and tonal richness while being extremely comfortable to play, even for smaller players.

Onboard OP-4BT preamp

Ovation wrote the book on live acoustic guitar. They were the first company to introduce pickups and preamplifiers in the acoustic guitar, essentially inventing a new instrument. The Ovation Celebrity Standard Plus CS24 is equipped with an OP-4BT preamp that has +/- 12dB control over the bass, midrange, and treble frequencies. In addition, the onboard tuner makes it easy to stay in tune. Ask any guitarist here at Sweetwater - the OP-4BT gives you the tonal control you need onstage.

After talking to my sales engineer, Drew Foster, I ordered this guitar in Koa. I was blown away when I unboxed it! The pictures do not do it justice, and the sound is very rich and full with good bottom end, full mids, and sparkling highs. Thanks Sweetwater and Drew!

Great guitar

Sounds crisp and clearn plug in or not.Beautiful guitar and played great out of the box. Thanks Kevin spunde and sweetwater.

This is my prized possession.

I received my CS24P as a gift about four years ago, and I absolutely love this guitar. Great organic sound and a good deal of tonal variety, and I've kept the stock preamp without ever having any complaints or wiring issues. In spite of the fact that it's only a mid-depth body I usually have no issues getting it to project clearly. I won't claim to be very well-versed in other acoustics in this price range, but in my opinion you can't do much better than this guitar. I absolutely love mine.

Plays great right out of the box, sounds awesome plugged in. Has a great feel smooth neck, easy to move up and down. I bought this as a back up and for travel, but find myself playing it constantly.

Excellent value

I've been playing since the late 1960s, though I would say I'm mediocre at best. I have 5 guitars, none of them "high-end," and among the 5 are 3 Ovation 6-strings: a super-shallow roundback in black, a deep-bowl contour back in sunburst, and this mid-depth roundback in figured Koa. Of the 3, this one is my favorite to play, and it looks spectacular. The OP-4BT preamp doesn't have all the features of Ovation's OP-Pro preamp, but you still get 3-band EQ, a gain control, and – my favorite supplement – a rock-solid and dependable tuner. Whether played through a combo amp or one specifically for acoustic guitar, the tone is excellent when the guitar is plugged in. Plenty of bass when you need it, clear, crisp highs, and ample mid-tone power. As a pure acoustic, however, is where this Ovation outperforms the other two that I have. The deep bowl tends to be "boomy," with somewhat muddy bass tones when played without amplification. The super-shallow body produces tone that's too thin for my taste as an acoustic. This mid-depth body, frankly, is about the same thickness as a "regular" acoustic guitar, and that seems to be the sweet spot. Projection is superb when played as a pure acoustic, and tone, from low to high, is clear and distinct, with very good resonance. The Koa top is gorgeous, and a real attention-getter. The finish is very good, but there's some unevenness in application. Truthfully, that unevenness doesn't show, it's just something I can feel when I'm playing the instrument. The finish on the back of the neck, however, is up to Ovation's usual excellent standard, and the neck on mine is smooth and fast. Overall, materials and assembly quality are very good. No little blobs of glue, no sharp edges on the frets, no sloppiness in the tuners.Intonation is excellent for a guitar in this price range. I use a capo regularly, and almost never have to tweak the tuning when I move the capo up the neck. With or without capo, this Celebrity Standard Plus tunes easily, and holds its tune dependably, a feature I've found common in all 3 of my Ovations. I'm very much a fan of Ovation's "soft-vee" neck profile, and prefer it to the profile on most other guitars – the point being that the instrument is really comfortable to play in terms of my left hand. Barre chords are relatively easy, movement up and down the neck is fast, and – after I had it tweaked by a local luthier – the action is just right.Hardware, after several months of use, seems straightforward and sturdy. No issues with tuners, bridge, frets, strap buttons or pre-amp. The roundback body of the guitar will last far longer than I will. With a traditional wood top, the guitar isn't in the carbon-fiber category as far as stability is concerned, but the back, at least, won't warp. I'm very much a disciple of Ovation's application of acoustic theory to the design of their guitars, and while the roundback takes some getting used to when playing sitting down (which is how I usually play), sound projection/volume when played as a pure acoustic is pretty amazing. No, it's not a $5,000 Martin, but the acoustic-electric was popularized by Ovation decades ago, and there are good reasons why they were all the rage for a while, and continue to be among the leaders in that category of instrument. Considering the price point, this guitar is an excellent value, and if mine were lost or stolen, I'd replace it as soon as possible.
