Innovative body and neck design redefine the modern bass

We love innovation at Sweetwater, and the NS CR5 Radius bass is pushing the boundaries of bass guitar design. Never one to rest on his past creations, Ned Steinberger has pushed the realm of instrument design with his latest bass creation. The CR5's Diradial body shape sports a maple body with a flame maple top. Its convex shape is extremely comfortable and balanced. The Fusion neck is a one-piece maple neck with an embedded continuous carbon fiber core that enhances the sustain and note definition of the bass.

Integral Pickup System delivers big bass tones

The CR5 Radius houses an integrated piezo and magnetic pickup system that was designed by NS Design and EMG. A pair of EMG humbucker provide any electric tone you can dream of and the NS bridge-mounted Polar piezo pickup system offers great acoustic sounds. When these pickups are blended together you get a massive tonal palette to create rich, full-sounding bass tones. A powerful, built-in 18V preamp gives you tons of dynamic headroom for any style of music you may be playing. The CR5's active electronics let you concoct any tone your imagination can come up with. When you're looking for a one-stop, workhorse bass guitar, then you should definitely consider the NS Design CR5 Radius bass! Call your Sweetwater Sales engineer to learn more about this amazing bass.

The Latest Steinberger Masterpiece

Ned Steinberger breathed new vision and life into stringed instruments when he introduced the L2 bass at Summer NAMM in 1979. Innovatively designed without headstocks, the L2s astonished the music world and prototypes were quickly sold to such esteemed players as John Entwistle of The Who, Tony Levin of King Crimson, and Andy West of The Dregs. Since then, Steinberger basses and guitars have continued to impress musicians - and engineers! - the world over. Their cutting-edge Headless Tuning systems make way for stability never thought possible, while their Radius body shape, Fusion necks, and EMG humbucking pickup systems allow for an extensive range of tonal possibilities.

Very Nice Bass, But....

First let me say I've been playing bass for 25 years and owned many high end basses over the years. This is a beautiful instrument with great craftsmanship. I wanted to love this bass so badly, but unfortunately there were a few deal breakers for me. Action - I'm very well versed at setting up basses, and I just could not get my normal desired action without experiencing extreme buzz or notes choking out. Yes I had proper neck relief, that was not the issue. The B string needed to be quite high to be functional, which really limited the overall action as, you cant adjust individual string height - only each side of the bridge. With that said, if you can live with a medium low action at very best, this should not be an issue for you. Sound - The EMG electronics and pickups on this bass are great, IF you want a very modern tone and overall sound. This is not your Father's Fender Jazz bass by any means. There is a good deal of tonal variety available, but none that I could fall in love with. Again, this is a purely personal preference and may not apply if you like the modern sound this Bass provides. Ergonomics / Design - This is where this bass truly shines. I feels very nice in the lap and even better on the strap. Balance is amazing and barely feels like you are even wearing it. Just a great feeling bass you can play for hours on end. In the end this bass just wasn't for me. My issues are mostly personal preference (although the action limitation and B string is a bit concerning). I don't want to turn anyone off from this bass. Just realize what it has to offer, and give it a try without hesitation. It may be everything you could ever want in a high end bass.
