Unbelievable value for the price, beautiful flawless finish, and they sound terrific!
My first real drum kit was the old Tama Superstar line that I bought in 1983 in the Cherry Wine finish and with shells made from birch. Big drumkit, modeled after Simon Phillip's configuration. They had a terrific sound and were BIG drums I sold them years ago when I stopped playing drums, and a few months ago, I decided to buy a new drum kit, and I bought these in this Black Burst finish.
My old kit cost almost $3000 in 1983, albeit with all the hardware, pedals and throne. This kit sounds just as great as my old one, even more dynamic with the maple shells.
The toms respond to all the tuning I'm throwing at them. From high pitched Terry Bozzio tuning to low fat ones. I check it with the "fingertip" test tapping the heads to full on caveman slamming them, and they are rich with tone, punchy, and LOUD. The bass drum packs a serious punch too, and I have nothing but the stock heads on them with nothing inside to muffle them. I like my drums to be as wide open as I can get them, and these drums can get wide open. The hardware is holding up just fine, and the drums have great sustain. The stock tom heads will be replaced because to me they aren't good enough to get what I can out of this kit, but you always replace stock heads anyway for what you prefer.
I like these drums so much that I am ordering more add on drums to get back to a big rig again.
I am also going to order more custom items like hoops, because the hoops while just fine I can upgrade. The shells are terrific for the price. The bearing edges have no flaws that I can mention. The insides may have a spot or two on them that may be a tiny bit rough, but not enough to really make me notice, and that's on the bass drum. The shells are in round, which is very important. To me, I buy it for the shells alone, and they sing. All the Tama quality from the shells, finish to the hardware is all here in this kit. If you are looking for a inexpensive kit that sounds like an expensive one, and one that you can gig with, I recommended this one highly.
The best thing about my purchase was working with Drew Lehman, my sales engineer. After a very almost traumatic experience with a very well known national musical instrument retailer that had zero knowledge of what I was looking for and treated my horribly for asking to demo some equipment that I was looking to purchase, I decided to call Sweetwater. Best decision I made, and Drew has been lights out terrific. He hit a home run for me, and we added in a Gibraltar hardware pack that he recommended, and it's stellar. He and I are like good buddies now. It's that kind of personal and custom experience that I am looking for, and Drew is with me all the way with all my crazy questions and emails I am sending him over other gear I plan to purchase. I'm a very picky person when it comes to any gear, since I work with gear for a living. Sweetwater and Drew have exceeded my expectations, and I plan to keep going forward with them for all my musical needs.
