    The Real Deal

Clean, Articulate, Accurate Stereo Image when used for drum overhead mic. Different selectable polar patterns as well....also, great for acoustic guitar and back doing multiple vocal parts in one take.

    More Than Expected

The Avantone CK-40 is one clean machine. It presents a balanced tone with a hint of "sparkle" that I just love. Clear lows, smooth mids, and dreamy highs that are not tinny or brittle. It is very musical and pleasing. It's also an attractive piece of gear. It's sure to turn heads when you set it up.

This is a GREAT microphone for stereo applications. This mic is quiet, accurate, and dynamically appealing for critical applications. In an X/Y cardioid configuration, the stereo separation achieved with this microphone is nothing short of stellar. It makes creating a stereo image during mix-down extremely easy since the mic has already done all of the hard work for you during tracking!

My only gripe is that it seems to require a bit more gain than would be expected to achieve a usable level. This is not really an issue since the mic is so quiet, however, those with noisy mic-pres should take note.

Overall, I could not be more pleased with the CK-40.

    Great Stereo Mic!

I had been using a matched pair of Rode NT-5 mics for drum overheads for about 5 years. Although great, they seemed a little brittle to me and I was never sure if I had the correct mic positioning for an XY configuration.
Well this mic solved all my problems.
The sound is warmer and I am able to 'position' the drums in the mix much better now. The XY configuration is easy and just plain great.
I also tried the mic as a room mic using the M/S method and was impressed. Then I set it up in front of an acoustic guitar and this is now my goto Acoustic guitar mic.
I am extremely happy I got this mic and will continue to use it on every session I do!

    A Great Value...and versatile...very versatile

I pretty much never give any product a five-star rating, but I have quickly come to love this mic. If you have read much about it, you know that it can do various angles of X-Y as well as Blumlien, and of course M-S. One really handy thing is to leave both capsules pointed forward and make one omni and the other velocity (figure 8). Wyy do this ? Because in post, you can control the on-axis pick up pattern (all first order microphone patters are built on ratios of pressure (omni pattern) to velocity (figure 8 pattern). That's a bit esoteric, but a good thing to remember.

Now, for the heavy hitter - M-S.

I do a lot of work with live concerts, primarily dealing with binaural (using the Neumann KU 100) but I often like to supplement that audio with near-field M-S. I love the versatility of M-S in the sense that (as Wes Dooley pointed out so eloquently in his paper) you are effectively controlling an virtual X-Y pair of mics. That is, the ratio of side to mid effectively controls the included angle.

Apart from the overall versatility of the mic, the convenience is huge. I liked using M-S, but before owning this mic I had to deal with getting the diaphragms from two separate mics close, often with clumsy mic arrangements or multiple stands...and as we know, sometimes mic stands just can't be placed in certain spaces. With this mic you can rely on having to use just one stand and take up about as little space as is possible to get what you want. I can see using another of these (very) close by (where space permits) set up as a Blumlein or X-Y so that in post, you have options.

As far as the mic itself, it sounds reasonably neutral, is quiet, and has never distorted or given me any reliability issues.

One thing that really does bother me though is the 'feel' of the upper capsule when rotated. I would much prefer more resistance and a smoother feel, and I would love it if there were physical stops every 15 degrees or so (for consistency's sake). However, as I tend to use this primarily as an M-S, I don't have to worry about that so much (though I typically do apply a thin strip of gaffer tape at the seam between capsules to prevent the angle from being accidentally changed once I have rotated the upper diaphragm into position).

One last thing - I wish this came with a standard mount as well as the shock mount (which seems to work well). In many instances, the shock mount is overkill in the venues in which I typically record, and I'd like a smaller, simple clamping style mic mount...but...as Steven Wright once said "You can't have everything (where would you put it?)".

Anyway, I have been really happy with this mic, and unlike some impulse-buys that I have made with other mics, have absolutely zero buyer's remorse about this mic.

Great Great microphone! this is a fantastic room mic with great sound! i was very impressed with its abilities. Take the LSD2 and make it modern with a crisper better sound and you have this.

    One of My Favorite Mics

I bought this mic primarily for drum overheads, but I have since used it on acoustic guitar (X-Y and mid-side), violin, vocal (one capsule), and guitar amp (one capsule). I have been pleased in all instances. It makes me happy to know that great quality is attainable through a relatively inexpensive microphone. Avantone has not disappointed me yet. It is a great-sounding mic, and it looks amazing, too!

My only issue: The shock mount does not always stay in position once I tighten it at the angle I want. This may not be an issue with every mount, though. Still a great purchase.
