Amazingly Balanced Sound for Any Room or Theater

The JBL CBT 70J-1 passive speaker uses JBL's breakthrough Constant Beamwidth Technology to produce a column speaker with incredibly balanced projection across a large area. Passive column speakers normally create inconsistencies in sound when you move about the room, but not the CBT 70J-1! JBL's patent-pending design uses an array of four 5" LF drivers and sixteen 1" HF drivers, and the result is consistent, natural sound coverage - both horizontally and vertically. You can even tailor the vertical dispersion to optimize the sound to any room! Perfect for large rooms like churches, school auditoriums, and theaters, the CBT 70J-1 is easy to install as well as easy to optimize for your room. Call Sweetwater today to find out how you can integrate the JBL CBT 70J-1 passive speakers into your live sound system!

Innovative design for superior sound coverage

The JBL CBT 70J-1 handles up to 500 watts of power to drive an array of four 5" LF drivers and sixteen 1" HF drivers. 10 years of research have created a column speaker that uses analog delay beam-forming and amplitude tapering to make sure directivity is even across the CBT 70J-1's extended 60Hz-20kHz frequency range. The result is even, balanced sound without frequency lobing inconsistencies as you move around the coverage area. Best of all, you can switch between 45-degree vertical dispersion (for medium-throw coverage in smaller rooms) and 25-degree vertical dispersion (for long-throw coverage in larger rooms).

Perfect for performance and speech

Any place you need clear, balanced sound that covers a large area well, the JBL CBT 70J-1 will deliver. Switchable voicings let the CBT 70J-1 use a flat frequency response for music playback, as well as a speech mode with a midrange presence boost. It's ideal for school auditoriums and churches, allowing your message to be heard clearly throughout the room. Anywhere you have a large room that requires lots of coverage without the compromise of dead spots or frequency lobing, the CBT 70J-1 is ready to perform.

Easy to install

JBL's CBT 70J-1 column speakers come with a swiveling wall bracket, and also have 10 threaded insert points on the rear of the fiberglass reinforced ABS cabinet. Contractors love how easy it is to install the CBT series, and it's easy to position them for the maximum coverage in your room. Best option for price and quality

Using these speakers as a L & R setup in a church seating 600 people. Replaced 6 directional speaker center cluster. Reduced the amount of reverb in the room. Allowed for a better mix in the house and reduced the number of individuals needing to use the hearing loop as well as the hearing assistant. Most of the time we have folks coming in asking where the speakers are because the are so inconspicuous. Everyone is so amazed by how the entire sanctuary evenly fills with sound.

CBT works better than expected!

Installed a pair of these in our sanctuary and everyone is delighted with the result. We're getting good stereo imaging even near the edges of the sanctuary and about 1.5db falloff front row to back wall. I am using them with a subwoofer so they get a lo-cut version of the mix. The spectrum analyzer shows them to be flat response throughout the room with the music setting on the enclosure. Great intelligibility for the sermon as well as vocals during music. Because of their wide horizontal beam width and their positions at the extreme left and right of the room, I am aiming them at nearly a 45 degree angle into the room which is providing excellent even coverage. Great technology!

Work great, using for rear channel on a 400 watt per channel Carver amp. On 5 channel they are loud at high volume, but don't boom in a particular direction, in other words the sound is more evenly distributed.

Great sound quality.

Installed two of these in a 350 seat sanctuary. Fills the house with great sound. Speech is clear and music is crisp.

CBT 70J-1 + 70JE-1

they are not meant to mount on a side wall to replace existing column speakers on each side of a long room. They don't say you can do that but they don't say you can't in anything i found. The speakers have an approximate 135 to 150 degree horizontal beam width. If you mount them on a side wall facing to the rear of a 85 foot long room, intelligibility is gone at about 45 feet unless you make them so bright they sound terrible. 1/3 or more of the horizontal beam bounces off of the adjoining wall and destroys the carefully crafted vertical beam. If you put them 10 feet from the wall the sound if fine to 85 feet. Don't use these to directly replace wall mounted columns in the front of the room. They work better but not optimally. K arrays are slightly better against the wall but constraining an interference pattern device by ruining its interference pattern with first reflections 12 inches away is not good. The need space on each side

Sweetwater Advice

Robby Resnick

Some things function as both art and object. This is absolutely one of them. The JBL CBT's provide line array coverage and clarity for a fraction of the cost of other systems. They sound amazing on their own for spoken word or - coupled with a CBT 50 or 100 - can project music throughout a large space without losing clarity. It amazes me how they have controlled and focused the energy these boxes put out. (And when installed properly, they are as pretty to look at as they are to listen to!)
