Amazingly Balanced Sound for Any Room or Theater

The JBL CBT 70J-1 passive speaker uses JBL's breakthrough Constant Beamwidth Technology to produce a column speaker with incredibly balanced projection across a large area. Passive column speakers normally create inconsistencies in sound when you move about the room, but not the CBT 70J-1! JBL's patent-pending design uses an array of four 5" LF drivers and sixteen 1" HF drivers, and the result is consistent, natural sound coverage - both horizontally and vertically. You can even tailor the vertical dispersion to optimize the sound to any room! Perfect for large rooms like churches, school auditoriums, and theaters, the CBT 70J-1 is easy to install as well as easy to optimize for your room. Call Sweetwater today to find out how you can integrate the JBL CBT 70J-1 passive speakers into your live sound system!

Innovative design for superior sound coverage

The JBL CBT 70J-1 handles up to 500 watts of power to drive an array of four 5" LF drivers and sixteen 1" HF drivers. 10 years of research have created a column speaker that uses analog delay beam-forming and amplitude tapering to make sure directivity is even across the CBT 70J-1's extended 60Hz-20kHz frequency range. The result is even, balanced sound without frequency lobing inconsistencies as you move around the coverage area. Best of all, you can switch between 45-degree vertical dispersion (for medium-throw coverage in smaller rooms) and 25-degree vertical dispersion (for long-throw coverage in larger rooms).

Perfect for performance and speech

Any place you need clear, balanced sound that covers a large area well, the JBL CBT 70J-1 will deliver. Switchable voicings let the CBT 70J-1 use a flat frequency response for music playback, as well as a speech mode with a midrange presence boost. It's ideal for school auditoriums and churches, allowing your message to be heard clearly throughout the room. Anywhere you have a large room that requires lots of coverage without the compromise of dead spots or frequency lobing, the CBT 70J-1 is ready to perform.

Easy to install

JBL's CBT 70J-1 column speakers come with a swiveling wall bracket, and also have 10 threaded insert points on the rear of the fiberglass reinforced ABS cabinet. Contractors love how easy it is to install the CBT series, and it's easy to position them for the maximum coverage in your room. Clean, Clear Sound

I'm a full time Audio Engineer doing over 200 live shows a year. When our local pro audio rep suggested installing these in our church, I was pretty skeptical. He suggested going to another church that installed them a year ago to take a listen. I was amazed at the quality of their sound and gave the green light to use them in our project. Now that they are in, here are some thoughts and tips on how to get the best out of these little guys. 1.) First of all, you have to know your facility. Our church seats a max of 300 people and is wider than it is deep. This is the ideal installation scenario. We used two CBT 70J's separated out from one another to provide maximum coverage. 2.) You MUST pair these with subs to get a decent sound. We paired our system with 2, 15" subs and the bottom end is really nice. Solid, punchy bass, without sounding mushy. 3.) Keep them within their limits. These aren't ear crushing cabinets with high SPL. PROS: 1.) Incredible speech, vocals and instrument clarity 2.) Even coverage of the sanctuary. Every seat is a good seat with no hot spots in the room due to the speaker design. 3.) Smooth, even sound. Nothing harsh about these cabinets. They are extremely smooth sounding. 4.) Smaller size blends in nicely. No big speaker cluster to deal with. CONS: 1.) Lower SPL then a line array or traditional cabinet. 2.) Need to be paired with a sub to sound their best. Final Thoughts: These speakers exceeded my expectations in the space we are using them in. The sound is even throughout the room in both volume and tonal quality From the front pew to the back corner, the sound is consistent. If you install these in the right room, and with the proper expectations, you will be extremely happy with them. If you are trying to fill too large of a space with them, or if you don't use them with subs, you're going to be disappointed. It's extremely important to use them in the right application.

Perfect DJ Speaker ??

I know these are "installation" speakers. I replaced My BOSE LI's with these and a JBL powered sub. So far, real good. Easier to raise above the crowd and tilt down. Killer tone. Very smooth response. Easy to put on a speaker stand. I'm still figuring out optimum crossover points and EQ settings. Not for everybody I guess ... but I give them 5 stars.

Great for the living room

it just isn't suited to a large room for sound reinforcement. 5" speakers and 1" tweeters will only perform as you would expect - in a small space. A simple 15" speaker and horn will outperform these pricey beasts in a church or auditorium with ease.

Sweetwater Advice

Robby Resnick

Some things function as both art and object. This is absolutely one of them. The JBL CBT's provide line array coverage and clarity for a fraction of the cost of other systems. They sound amazing on their own for spoken word or - coupled with a CBT 50 or 100 - can project music throughout a large space without losing clarity. It amazes me how they have controlled and focused the energy these boxes put out. (And when installed properly, they are as pretty to look at as they are to listen to!)
