Behringer C-2 microphone

Beyond expectations. Good solid well made.sound as good as anything. But I found a little hidden secret. They have removable capsules. Which means that you can change them. So, when is behringer going to make them available? See photo

Shockingly Good!

Ok, I ordered these in for the fun of it! $30 each, why not! I set one up along side an ECM8000 and a LA-220, plugged them in the board and did a comparison using the same settings. What I wanted to hear was where the noise floor was, and how much definition they had. Of course, my LA220 was the favorite, but the C-2 came in far closer to the LA220 then the ECM8000. It had far less self noise and far more definition. One of my gripes with the 8000 is how much noise it generates. Now granted, the 8000 is an omni, but I am talking electronic noise generated by the microphone. I don't know how they are making them this cheap, but I am ordering another set before they change their mind!

A screaming deal

I bought these hoping to see what the deal was with small condenser stereo recording. I wasn't expecting much. After opening the boxes (the Sweetwater packing box, the inner cardboard packaging, and the plastic carrying case) and installing the mics into the built in bar holder gadget, I then plugged them into my audio interface and messed around with some acoustic guitar while having the mics in an X/Y stereo position. The results shocked me with how good they were. There was zero distortion, there wasn't as much noise as I thought, and these mics can actually pick up to around 40kHz, a real perk if you have a good enough audio interface. The video I linked has a tiny fraction of what I got. I recorded my quick and dirty test with Audacity in my bedroom, and if these mics recording into Audacity in an untreated bedroom can sound so nice, there's no telling what they can do in a real studio.

Fantastic all around mics to have on hand

I have used these mics for a wide range of applications. I get great sound from drums, strings and crowd noise. Fantastic accuracy - even better price.

They even work for basic vocals or milking an amp in a pinch. I never have to worry that I wont have a spare all around mic.

Spectacular Mics for the Price !!!

No - these are not as good as my Rode M5s ... the M5s have a lower noise floor and a wider frequency response. BUT the C2s are great and I have not found any other microphones that even come close to this quality at this price point !!! The 0.63" diaphragm is a little strange as it is in between the usual sizes of 0.5" and 1.0" for small and large diaphragms respectively. BE CAREFUL :: they record with very high accuracy so they will not mask you deficiencies ...

I put the pair of C2s on a stereo bar and recorded a 1941 Martin 00 classical guitar by pointing one at the sound hole and the other at the 12th fret - they recorded every tiny little nuance the Martin is capable of - BEAUTIFUL !!! I plugged it into my Boss VE-2, sang ELP's From The Beginning, and sent the out to my audiophile reference monitors :: vocals are produced with high accuracy - clear, robust, and BEAUTIFUL !!! I tried one out to replace an SM58 for a live performance and found it to be so very much better - SM58s have a super high noise floor, and are a very old design that has not changed since the 50's - I'll keep my SM58 as a backup, but I'm using a C2 from now on!!!

Some warnings :: 1) Kill the channel volume if you decide the switch between flat, bass cut, or -10dB as it will produce a huge spike out the mains and monitors ... you have been warned ... 2) On my mixer, phantom power takes a very long time to decay, so the mic is still active for some time after the 48V is cut. 3) It is recommended to plug everything in BEFORE activating the 48V.

Go in peace people !!!
