Classic tube compression from E-H!

E-H's Black Finger employs the same compression techniques as many of the legendary high-end compressors that now populate the vintage gear market. Unlike many of the other "tube" products on the market that frequently under-deliver voltages from 9 volts to 50 volts to the circuit, Black Finger employs a toroidal transformer with a full 300 volts of tube-glowing power for optimal performance. For sonic variety, there are LED and lamp light sources to act as compression triggers, and Black Finger delivers musical sustain/compression for guitar or bass.

E-H Black Finger Features:
  • True bypass using a mechanical relay
  • Two different light sources (LED and lamp) offer uniquely varied and professional compression techniques
  • Super warm, sweet musical tone
  • Input and output gain controls
  • Professional portable compression
  • Two Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 vacuum tubes included
  • 12AC-1000 power supply included

From the legendary riffs of Jimi Hendrix and George Clinton to the new-school licks of Slipknot and Korn, musicians have relied on electro-harmonix since the late '60s. Whether you crave the sustaining overdrive of the Big Muff Pi or the warm spring reverb of the hot new Holy Grail, Electro-Harmonix has a stompbox with your name on it.

First let me say this is a total keeper for me. Second, let me say it didn't start off that way. When I first got the pedal, the only amp I had available was a small guitar amp. I knew I wouldn't get great results but what concerned me the most was how noisy it was and a slight buzz/distortion without even pushing the gain much. I told myself to keep the box since it was likely going back. On the other hand I could tell that it fattened up the sound a good amount so I figured I would sleep on it and decide after using it in a real sound system. Fast forward to Friday night church practice with a real sound system. Whole different story! First of all the pedal is absolutely quiet and let me tell you - we have a lot of buzzing/white noise problems with that system. Single coil pickups, vintage amps and the like wreak havoc. Not this pedal -totally quiet. NEXT: The added beef this thing adds to the signal is just right. Not over the top but it's there and it's real good. Best of all is the gain control and the compression. The gain can easily give you a full, saturated sound (that I like) and a WIDE range of compression. Personally I like the "squish" setting with the gain at 3:00 and the compression at 3:00. This gives a full, fat tone with lots of sustain - AWESOME! We have some amazing musicians on our praise team and they agreed that this thing is righteous. The one praise band leader literally said "that thing solves all your problems" - the problems being some notes weak, some boomy and not enough sustain. All notes are full and fat and keep ringing out. Tone is better than ever. On top of all that, even though this is a big pedal it still fits in my bass case so I just need to lug one thing to practice and to church! I highly recommend it.

A Great Value

" 5 Wow blown away" expresses my experience with this pedal. I agree with the previous reviewer its a very "natural' sounding compression. Sounds much like an old "classic", vintage, optical, tube compressor. The only complaint anyone could (honestly) make of it is that it can be noisy. But so can all compressors, its thier nature. Its a genuine, fully operational tube compressor, operating at 300 vDC, as a stompbox -use your head man!! It needs to be sheilded from noise sources and your cable runs needf to be high quality and kept short. Also, switching to NOS 5751 or 12AT7 tubes would help with noise (at the expense of some gain). This EHX line of tube pedals are incredibly well made, especially considering the price. Does Sweetwater have the option of uploading pics of customers gear? Because I would be happy to upload pics of the internal construction of my Blackfinger Compressor - its the real deal.

Great pedal...natural sounding compression, warm and exciting. I've tried others and this blows them away. Also great on keys, bass and vocals.
