As a lifelong stage and studio drummer, I typically stick to my set of Sennheiser MD 421s for toms. I decided to give these Shure Beta 98s a try for a change of pace, and I was amazed by how great they sound. They handle stick attack much more sharply, and they're excellent at capturing the overall sound of my drums in a clear and realistic manner. I'm very impressed.
The Shure Beta 98AMP is built for tour-grade reliability, but I've found it to also be great for quickly getting solid tones in the studio as a tom spot mic. The sturdy drum mounts and gooseneck makes mic placement a breeze, and the small capsule stays out of the drummer's way. It's also able to deliver thunderous low end, yet doesn't transfer resonances from the drum hoop into the body of the mic.
I have owned these for 6 years now and still use at least one in every drum session. My go to SD-Bottom mic when using 421's on toms. They also sound great on non wooden SD-Top. But money in the bank on single ply headed open tuned toms.
Shure Beta 98 AMP
These mics sound spectacular! Used them on toms and snare drums. They are so fat and punchy but still have clarity. The mic clips are a bit tight to work with. It took a lot of might to get them in and slide them through the clip! They definitely will not move once you place them though.
Value for money mic pack
The microphones deliver as promised: easy handling, clear percussion sound and good dynamics. No distortion even close to the drumhead and our drummer hits them hard. All in all I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Also good no-nonsense service.
