Christmas Gift
This item was a Christmas gift, so it hasn't been given yet. I did want to comment on the service from Sweetwater. Their service was the best, they called to make sure everything was ok and the bag of candy in the package was such a pleasant surprise. I would definitely order from them again and I did!
Unbelievably Impressed!!!
I've been playing another brand's flat-wounds for years. Always liked the smooth soft sound they provided. Recently, we've been bringing a second guitar onto The Team and I wanted something "punchier", so Pablo suggested I try these Elixers...
Smartest choice I've made in a long time. The response on these strings are faster than anything I've played to date. I put them on My Number One (A 2006 Ibanex SRX650) and on a brand new Fender Jazz I purchased last week. Cuts RIGHT THRU the mix, they have excellent response and the sustain makes it possible to shut my compression pedal off.
These are my choice from now on
Change strings... Maybe once a year???
Look, here's the deal with this brand of strings... They're a little more expensive than the rest, BUT they retain their zing forever! I've been using these for years on a bunch of different basses, so that even if a bass has been sitting around for a while, it's always ready to go with these. All of my basses with round wounds on them have these strings. They feel good under my fingers, sound great, and are always reliable. They are my brand...
Best Strings
Great feel
First Set of Elixir Bass Guitar Strings
Hey I love these strings for a four string bass that is. You can really get the sound you want with these strings. If it's the bright slap or the deep bass sound or anything between they will do the job. I will purchase again.
Good choice for longer lasting strings!
A very good choice of strings used by many pros and amatuers alike. Not a bad price for what you get, too. Other string brands are doing very well these days, but for those who know the quality of both Elixir Strings & Sweetwater, you know that you are looking at the right strings in the right place to put in your cart! (Gotcha, hehe!
These are what I needed
I've been using Elixir strings for over 15 years now and they have never failed me. I use to be a pick player in my younger days and was looking for a longer lasting string. I needed something that was going to take the abuse of lots of playing time with a pick. The price was not my initial concern because they just need to be durable. I figure the coating would muffle the sound but I was wrong. Use up all the webbing up and I still had the bare string. They are bright and well balanced and I've never ever had one break. If John Paul Jones uses them, they can't be all bad right?
Elixer Bass Strings
Always Amazing, These strings are all I use these days
Elixer bass strings

Elixirbass strings
The best! I've always used these strings. They last for about 4 months and they always sound bright.
Bright, punchey, long lasting!
These are the best bass strings I have ever used. I put Elixir strings on everything, they last forever, and sound amazing! Even if you have your bass in C-sharp standard, they still manage to be bright!
Elixir Bass String

Review...after extended use
OK, so I wrote a not so positive review when I first got these. I still stand by the lack of chimey quality that you get from brand new strings *but*....After a few weeks of tweaking my tone, I finally got these dialed in. Not a setting I would typically use but it works. As I said in my previous review, these sounded like strings that have been in use for a bit out of the box...But the tone hasn't changed after hammering on them for a while now. They seem to be sitting in a sweet spot of not overly bright brand-new and not muffled and dead of old strings. So, there's no way I can in good faith let me old review stand with out balancing it out with this one. I gotta eat some crow and say these are pretty dam good and I will be buying them again. You may have to spend a good amount of time adjusting your tone to get the most out of these strings as they are not your average set and your average settings (in my case) just wasn't bringing out what these can do. Very happy with them now.
GREAT STRINGS
SOOOOOO SWEET BABY!
Bass
The strings are some of the best I have ever played
Long Lasting Strings
These strings give great long lasting tone that is easy on your frets. Easy to tell when they are near the end of life because coating starts to fray. Tone is not subdued like round wound strings. Pricey but worth it.
Elixir Nanoweb Med Bass strings
Great tone and easy to play. They feel like they have finger ease on them all of the time.
Bummer
So been reading about these for a while and figured I'd give them a try. First thing I noticed was no felt/twine wrap on the ends...Does it make a difference? Couldn't tell you but it is an extra step in the manufacturing process and shows attention to detail and less potential to mar your metal so there's that. Got them on and winding up I barely notice any shimmer. You know, the almost chime like quality you from new strings? So that was another red flag. Got them tightened up and these things are pretty dull, no real brightness to them. If that's your style, great...It's not mine. The E string is pretty dead and the G string was very loud, very inconsistent tonality. I guess all this is to be expected from strings coated in some gunk from the manufacturer...I'd rather enjoy bright strings for a few weeks with a gradual taper off than flat strings out of the package...that'll stay flat longer. I typically play Dean Markley, Blue Steel and these are for sure no where near those in terms of brightness and quality. These sound like 3 month old Blue Steels. Total bummer...Your mileage may vary but I'm getting off at this stop and going back to what sounds good, to me.
Don't do it
Hands down the worst bass strings I've ever tried. These strings buzz all over the place and sound horrible, both acoustic and plugged in. If you want your bass to sound like a metal body resonator these might work for you. I gave them 4 weeks to "break in" and then threw them in the trash, never again Elixir!!!
Really Expensive Binder Twine
I've been using Elixer acoustic and electric guitar strings for 10 years now. So I thought to myself, "Elixers have to sound great on my Fender Elite Jazz bass." Wrong! These are the worst bass strings I've ever tried.
Right after install, they were so bright and metallic sounding, I couldn't use the bass live or in recordings. So I gave it 2 months of break in time (with about 20 hours of playing). While the brightness came down some, the metallic 1.5 kHz to 2 kHz brashness is still there. Even worse, these strings are very microphonic.
And then there's the price... it's higher than good sounding strings.
I will note that the coating takes the sliding finger squeaks down considerably.
Don't waste your money. D'Addarios, Fender, DRs, Rotos, or even cheap store brand strings sound better.
Don't buy these.
Way too Bright!
These strings came on my Ibanez SR500 Bass. Without a doubt the worst sounding strings I ever heard on a bass. Low E has way too much bass and all the rest are WAY too bright. I can not wait to get these off my bass.
