Nice Upgrade at Reduced Price

I've been a fan of BFD since V.1.5 and I still use it regularly for rock drums since I'm not a good drummer. The latest version adds many new kits and loops that sound substantially different than V.2. The new kits are sonically clearer in my opinion and it is much easier to appreciate the difference between kit pieces of each type. V.2 drums sound much deeper and phatter. Having the ability to mix and match drums kits adds a lot to the versatility and utilization of this sampled set, V.2 + V.3 drums kits. At the reduced price the decision to upgrade is a "no brainer". The system effects have not changed very much in my opinion from V.2 to V.3. The overall system control is very little changed from V.2 to V.3 and for me that is a good thing because I don't like to learn new software. Of course using BFD with an electronic drum set is great fun if your home studio has enough space. I like to use loops and add my own fills to a drum track. BFD is also great for adding drum sounds to MIDI loops from other sources.

BFD3 Is Awesome!

For many years, I had been an enthusiast and satisfied user of Battery3 by Native Instruments. For reasons I never understood, that company decided not to continue supporting acoustic sampling at which point I began looking for an alternative. I bought BFD2, but found the interface challenging and ended up sticking with my familiar software. When BFD3 was announced, I was also at the point of changing computers and I knew there would be no future with NI. I decided then and there to make the switch. I committed myself to learning BFD3 and, actually, I find the new interface to be quite appealing. I run the product in standalone mode and use it for performance (without a DAW). I have purchased 3 expansion packs (Percussion, Jazz & Funk, Orchestral) although I find myself relying almost exclusively on the BFD3 kits (Mapleworks sticks and brushes) plus certain percussion samples. PROS: Acoustic drum sounds, interface flexibility, features, speedCONS: The folder structures can be daunting and, while I have figured out how to do what I need, it took me a fair amount of trial and error. Product support can be hit or miss and the community forum is sparsely monitored. Overall, I am enthralled with BFD3. It is the most expensive package on the market, but it is worth the investment in terms of feature-functionality and outstanding acoustic samples.

Worth the upgrade

OK, the interface takes a little getting used to, but once you do, you won't look back. The ability to expand the mixer window is a big plus for me. The sounds are top notch - definitely a step up from BFD2. The kit presets are excellent. They have a lot of effort in to offering a wide variety of styles from funk to metal, country to hip hop, each with it's own set of mix characteristics faithful to the style. The load time seems a little slower than V2, but probably because it's loading more articulations. I kind of miss the color kit pieces (as opposed to the bland grey geometrics) but I'm sure I'll get over that. All that said, I'm really enjoying the new features. Don't hesitate (like I did) to get this terrific upgrade.
