Has Become My Favorite Drive Pedal

When I ran across the Boss Combo Drive I was surprised to learn that it's been out for several years now. I'm also surprised that it's not more popular. You can use this as a clean boost with the Sound control set to the minimum clean setting or start turning it up for some really nice crunch at the mid point or you can get some distortion when it's turned past the Crunch setting.

So is this really a Vox in a box? I wouldn't go that far but it gives a pretty convincing British flavor to my Princeton Reverb Reissue that I really like and it has become my favorite drive pedal.

I highly recommend the Boss Combo Drive if you're looking for a flexible overdrive pedal that will get you close to a British Combo sound. I use it like it's another channel on my Princeton.

Best "Vox in a box" out there!

If there's a better "Vox in a box" pedal made, I've yet to find it. I've owned the Catalinbread CB30 and Joyo AC Tone. I've heard good things about the Tech21 Liverpool. But the Boss Combo Drive is absolutely phenomenal. It is NOT just an overdrive pedal. It operates a sparkly clean boost with the "Sound" knob counter-clockwise. Turn it up a bit and you get that classic AC30 breakup tone similar to The Edge. In the higher gain settings, it can do a pretty convincing "Top Boost" Brian May tone.

But my favorite settings are the Clean or only slightly overdriven settings. I've heard many people dismiss this pedal because it's made by BOSS and it's "just another Tubescreamer". Nothing could be further from the truth. It transforms the sound of your amp. It is truly a modeling pedal, but unlike other (more expensive modeling pedals), you can get the Vox tone you want with just a two-band EQ and the Sound knob. Highly recommended!

    Convincing Tone and Feel

I have a number of different amps (Mesa, Bogner, Carol-Ann) that cover a variety of different tones. Never have used a Vox, as they are a little bright for my taste. However, one tone I love in the Vox is the broken-up clean sound, and I haven't been able to quite get it with my other gear and pedals.

This box does the trick! It has a very convincing AC tone and more importantly, feel. It changes character as you dig into the strings, or if you roll off the volume knob on the guitar....reacts just like an amp.

For what I want, I just use it in the lower gain stage, around 10-11 o'clock, and it just nails that Vox semi-clean tone without being too bright or brittle. It does have a lot more gain and saturation past 12 oclock, which is interesting but I really prefer the lower gain character.

Nice job Boss....there are a million OD and distortion pedals out there but this one fills a need and sounds great .

    favorite drive/distortion pedal

This is the most versatile distortion/overdrive pedal I own. It's great for both lead and rhythm. It seems to have elements of distortion and overdrive working together, with heavy chords like an amped up tube screamer and for liquidy solos with sustain similar to that on the DS-1. Sounds especially good for bluesy hard rock ala Guns and Roses, Allman Brothers. Decent metal sound is possible with bass and treble on pedal up and mids on amp scooped.
