A Real-deal Emulation of Alicia Keys’s Piano

When Native Instruments devised Alicia’s Keys, they didn’t just slap a superstar’s name on a virtual instrument. This virtual piano is the real deal. First of all, it reproduces the sound of Alicia’s actual Yamaha C3 Neo acoustic piano. What’s more, its 3,000-plus individual samples were played by Alicia herself, were captured in her private Oven Studios, and were recorded by Alicia’s engineer, Ann Mincieli. Each sample contained in Alicia’s Keys boasts 12 discrete velocity layers for the utmost in realism, and includes sampled sustain and release phases, an ultra-realistic sympathetic resonance system, and optional finger noise. At Sweetwater, we’re blown away by the lifelike feel and sound of Alicia’s Keys. It even includes natural mechanical release noises for each of the 88 keys, plus pedal noises. Integrated convolution reverb adds the perfect final polish. Native Instruments Alicia’s Keys sounds so good, in fact, that Alicia used it on her 2009 album, The Element of Freedom. You won’t find a better endorsement than that!

Native Instruments Alicia’s Keys Features:

  • The sound of Alicia Keys's own personal Yamaha C3 Neo piano
  • Almost 3,000 individual samples on 12 discrete velocity layers, with and without pedal
  • Equivalent to 17GB of uncompressed WAV files
  • Sampled from Alicia Keys's own playing, recorded in her studio with her own engineer
  • Developed with the artist and tailor-made for her recording and performance needs
  • Meticulous sampling technique, including the noise of the finger hitting the keys (optional)
  • Sampled sustain and release phases with authentic implementation of the sustain pedal
  • All-new sympathetic resonance system for harmonics in undampened strings
  • Exceptionally clean quality, yet featuring adjustable microphone noise for old-school sound
  • Natural mechanical release noises for each of the 88 keys, plus pedal noises
  • Integrated convolution reverb for tweaking the sound directly in the instrument
  • Easy user interface that provides integrated documentation of all settings

Thanks Alicia!

I've had this software only about a week and have been using it to replace old piano sounds in tracks that I use for work and for piano parts on an upcoming CD (#12 for me... wow)

I haven't fully utilized it yet but am very very happy with the richness and sensitivity of these samples. For the money it's a no brainer. I loved the sounds of the demos, and it does sound great like that. And, I'm just scratching the surface. AND, now I can tell people I had Alicia Keys playing my piano parts.... lol

My personal favorite

I started using Alicia's Keys several years ago when my team bought NI's Komplete Ultimate 8. I immediately fell for the dynamic string resonance available in pedal-down mode and the fully adjustable instrument noise. There are many times I missed having my 1990's Yamaha C5 E to play solo for recording at home. I had sold it long ago and, having taken up family life and a respectable job as a public school music teacher… I never expected to own a performance quality grand again. This VI satisfied my needs quite well and I also it to several trio gigs, using Apple MainStage to host it. Fast forward to 2021… I now own Komplete Ultimate 12, a re-built 1928 Steinway L, and I bought Alicia's Keys as a gift for a star pupil of mine, who plays nearly 20 hours/week. This young player was lamenting his keyboard's built-in pianos are sounding lackluster and one-dimensional to him.
Let me just say, he's no longer feeling those particular blues. The piano really shines on solo ballads with complex harmonies. In recordings and also through a decent PA system, it delivers endless amounts of rich, perfectly mic'ed grand piano sound, with both the bite one can get from a well-voiced Yamaha C-series, and the subtle depths available in a quiet room playing softly with the pedal down. What a beauty!
Music background: Pro performer/teacher since 1985. I’m 65 and I’ve played piano seriously since age 8.
