Fantastic FET compressor
I have four of these. They're incredibly musical. Drums, Guitars, vocals... whatever, these are some of the best workhorse channel compressors you can find.

I always wanted an 1176 style compressor for my home studio, but the price tag was a little steep, but now with the 500 series you can get a really good sound for less. and purple audio action compressor is just tooooo goooood!! thanks to my sales rep Carson McClaine I now own one! Peace!!!!!!!

THE PURPLE AUDIO ACTION IS BY FAR THE BEST 500 SERIES COMPRESSOR OUT FROM OUR EXPERIENCE BUCK FOR BUCK POUND FOR POUND. YES ARE THERE BETTER OF COURSE NOT IN THIS PRICE RANGE $725.00, WE HAVE NEVE, SHADOW HILLS, API, IGS AUDIO, DAKING, ATLAS PRO AUDIO LEVIATHAN, PETE'S PLACE BAC 500 IN OUR STUDIO. THE PURPLE AUDIO ACTION HAS THICK FINISHed 1176 FET SOUND, REAL THICK CINEMAG TRANSFORMERS BRING OUT THE IRON, OF COURSE NOT AS THICK AS THE SHADOWS VANDERGRAPH, AGAIN NOT AS EXPENSIVE EITHER. THE REASON FOR THE 4.5 STAR RATING NOT A SONIC QUALITY ISSUE. IN ORDER TO LINK A PAIR OF THE ACTION COMPS. YOU HAVE TO RUN A WIRE INTO HOLE 3 IN CIRCUIT BOARD IN THE BACK TO POSITION 6 IN THE OTHER UNIT. IF YOU BY THE PURPLE AUDIO 10 SLOT 500 CHASSIS THEN IT WORK NO PROBLEM NO WIRES NEEDED IT'S A PROPRIETARY FORCED MA-SURE MOVE. OTHER THAN THAT IT'S A WINNER...
Purple Action
I had the Purple Action for almost a month and overall the compressor sounded great! It did a great job of leveling out singing & rap vocals, and the sound of the transformer when you drive the input while turning compression off sounded amazing! I ran an 808 through it made it sound mean and full. It is a great color box that keeps the low end in tact which I loved! This compressor however had one major flaw which was my reason for returning it. Nuke mode (all buttons in ratio) sounded horrible. Even with the fastest attack, there were clicks and transients still coming through. It became worse with slower attack settings. It made crushed drums sound smaller and sucked in instead of sounding big and lively, and it made crushing rap vocals unusable because of all the pops and artifacts that came through. Nuke mode is one of the reasons you purchase an 1176 style of compressor, so the fact that it is unusable was really disappointing.
Great compressor at 4:1-20:1 ratios, great color box, metering is hit or miss, and awful nuke mode compression.
