A perfect replica of Ace's signature axe!

If you grew up in the '70s, there's a good chance that KISS provided the soundtrack to many of your memories. Recapture some of the KISS magic - specifically the Ace Frehley guitar sound from '77 and '78 - with the Gibson Custom Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul Custom. It carries the "Budokan" moniker because it's an exact replica of the guitar Ace wielded at the legendary KISS show Nippon Budokan in Japan in 1977. With three cream-colored humbuckers and that unmistakeable Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish, this is as close as you can get to owning the original.

Gibson Custom Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul Custom at a Glance:

  • Built to duplicate Ace Frehley's iconic tone
  • Limited to 100 guitars worldwide
Exact replica of the original

Matt Swanson, the guitar's current owner, worked closely with Ace Frehley and the Gibson Custom Shop so the guitar could be replicated in every way. This included digitally scanning every nook and cranny of the guitar so every last detail on the reproduction is just like the original.

Like the original Les Paul Custom, the Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul Custom is built from an unchambered mid-'70s "sandwich" body, consisting of middle and back section of solid mahogany and a thin maple veneer. The top is finished in the same hand-sprayed nitrocellulose Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish as the original, and then aged to mimic the wear and tear the original boasts. The neck is a key component of a guitar's feel, and this 3-piece mahogany neck is a meticulous re-creation of the original's thin profile. Aesthetically, the Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul Custom is adorned with mother-of-pearl block inlays, multi-ply binding, the classic split-diamond headstock inlay, and cream appointments. Ace swapped out the stock tuners for Grover pearloid banjo tuners, and Gibson Custom built this one to match.

Built to duplicate Ace Frehley's iconic tone

The guts of the Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul Custom consists of a trio of double-cream DiMarzio humbuckers: a pair of PAF models in the middle and neck, with a Super Distortion at the bridge. It's wired up exactly like the original too, with the 3-way toggle wired to the bridge pickup only, acting as a kill switch for the trademark Frehley "stutter" sound.
