Excels on vocals, but is also a stand-out choice on acoustic guitar
Audio-Technica classifies their AT831b as a lavalier microphone, but if there were a "seriously versatile" category, the AT831b would surely fit into it. And, it's for that reason that the AT831b is such a good fit for any venue — be it a school, a church, or a stage — looking to get the most out of their locker of microphones. You can use the AT831b on vocals, for excellent pickup. Yet, using an included instrument adapter clip, you can just as easily ust the AT831b to pick up acoustic guitars or other difficult-to-mic instruments. You'll be surprised by how full sounding the AT831b is — plus, with its cardioid pickup pattern, the AT831b can excel in situations where feedback or room noise tend to be problems.

Includes a bunch of accessories — windscreen, clip, instrument adapter, and more
You get a load of accessories with your AT831b, to make it suitable to nearly every miking situation. The AT831b condenser lavalier microphone comes with an attached AT8530 power module with a battery, and can use either 1.5V AA batteries or 9-52V phantom power. It also comes with the AT8116 foam windscreen to help you protect against wind noise outside. For using as a traditional lavalier microphone, just use the included AT8417 clothing clip. Or, if you're using the AT831b to mic instruments, you can use the AT8444 instrument adapter, also included. Finally, the AT831b comes with a protective case for traveling with and storing your microphone.

A great little high-quality workhorse

The 1st time I bought this Mic was back in 2007. And I really put it through its paces in the field and it gave me 15 years of great service until eventually it fell into a lake and never quite worked the same.

So, I looked at what was in the market, and although I have to fly the recordings from this Mic into izotopes Rx 9 to remove a little bit of the high-end hiss... that little extra effort in production is nothing compared to the value saved in the price point in this Mic.

Therefore, if you're looking for a reliable, clean, well-designed, and trustworthy workhorse to add to your stable of microphones in the field and/or in studio... Look no further, you found what you are looking for.

P.S. and the upgraded universal direction Mic clip that they now provide with this lav is just fantastic. It's so flexible and easy to use in almost every circumstance now that they provided this clip

AT831b outstanding for autoharp

I've been using the AT831b in performance settings for over a year, and I've been thoroughly impressed with it. Autoharps are notoriously hard to mic, but this little dandy does an outstanding job capturing subtleties of sound normally lost when mic'ing with more traditional methods. I wear the AT831b in my clothing, behind the autoharp, and when combined with a good dynamic mic out in front of the instrument I'm able to produce a sound quality for the audience that is almost identical to what I hear myself. The sound quality is superb -- very natural -- and I've not had any problems with extraneous noise. Feedback issues were minimal. The AT831b is a permanent part of my gear, and I never leave home without this little gem.

Met the need

I bought this for recording and performing with several obscure African instruments (segaba, karimba, and chipendani). These are instruments with very hard to reach "sweet" spots; normal mic technique did not do them justice. Has met all expectations. Am especially impressed by how good the mic sounds in recording. I have also taken to clipping it to the sound hole of my guitar as an alternative to plugging in my acoustic. A year of use, though, and the belt clip is losing its integrity. The screws on the screw-in clip stripped after about a month of use. Not a problem for studio use, but this mic isn't a true "road warrior" up to the demands of regular on-stage use. I'm probably using it pretty hard, since I have to switch it from instrument to instrument several times during a single gig.
