Lightweight, compact semi-hollowbody gives you amazing playing comfort

If you're a fan of semi-hollowbody guitars, but prefer the smaller dimensions of solidbody instruments, the Ibanez AM153 Artstar was made for you. The AM153 is supremely balanced and comfortable whether you're seated or standing, and it gives you the warm resonance you love about semi-hollowbodies. But it's also lighter in weight than either a semi-hollow or solidbody, which you'll really appreciate during marathon gigs.

Premium tonewoods and appointments, for stunning looks and amazing tone

Ibanez used exquisite figured bubinga for the AM153's top, back, and sides - and the results are breathtaking. This axe sports a speedy 3-piece mahogany/maple set neck, and the premium ebony used for the bound fingerboard doesn't just look incredible - it gives you buttery playability that's off the scale. Top-flight appointments abound on this gorgeous semi-hollowbody guitar, including the sustain-juicing ART-1 bridge and Quik Change III tailpiece, plus a tone-enhancing bone nut. And then there's the gold hardware that perfectly compliments the rich finish of this superb instrument.

Killer electronics deliver serious sonic versatility

The Ibanez AM153 Artstar semi-hollowbody is packing a duo of Super 58 custom humbuckers that deliver everything from warm jazz tones to searing shred. This potent elixer is poured through a three-way toggle plus a tone and volume pot for each pickup. Cool, but there's also a secret weapon onboard: the neck-pickup Tri-Sound switch, which lets you choose between series, parallel, or just the outer coil, adding zesty single-coil spank to your tone arsenal. Stellar Guitar

I'll second what everyone else is saying about the fret finish quality. Level and edge quality are custom shop level of perfection. I find the super 58s very servicable and quite similar sonically to '57 style Gibsons with balanced coil windings. The sound is a bit on the warm side wiht the neck pickup and does the jazz thing very well with the tone rolled a bit. With the tone open wide, there is a nice jangle with very good string definition. The bridge pickup does a decent job of rocking out and works very well with pedals. Pickup output is on par with humbuckers I've used with Alnico II magnets. They might be Alnico III as stated on some Ibanez literature. The fit and finish is stunning. The woods are beautiful and the instrument always draws very positive comments.Since I bought this used, I can't know why the original owner got rid of it. The instrument was flawless except for some scarring on the bridge height adjustment screws. There was a fair bit of relief to the neck with when I got it and it was strung with 12s. Intonation was also off. When I put 10s on, the intonation locked in and relief was pretty close. It's my guess that the first owner strung it with 12s and didn't realize a truss rod and intonation change were necessary for proper play. I'm going to editorialize and say this is why it is so important to buy a guitar where a good set-up is part of the deal. Set-up makes or breaks how a guitar plays. If you're not comfortable wrenching your own guitars, it's an essential part of a new instrument purchase. I've played at least a half dozen Sweetwater setup guitars and they have all been spot on. Whoever had this first, got rid of a fabulous instrument for what I think were set-up issues. Their loss, my gain.Lastly, I'll say I really like the AM/ES339 size semi-acoustics. They are very comfortable to my hand. I had a mid 70s ES-335 with which I never got comfortable. This small size is perfect for me.

Worth every penny.

Like the title says, this guitar is worth every penny. I was looking for something "universal" and this guitar simply blew me away. It's absolutely beautiful as well. Sweetwater also did an outstanding job setting it up. I was literally able to take it out of the box and play right away. A bit about the tones you can create on this guitar. This guitar is capable of playing just about anything with the coil splitting feature. It may seem like a stretch to say this guitar can achieve even old school thrash metal tones, but it can. Jazz players? You will NOT be displeased with the gorgeous mellow dark tones this guitar can produce. Switch to your neck pickup and rollback that tone knob and listen to those soothing melodies. The pickups on this guitar are so wonderfully responsive and delicate. The clean tones you can produce are beautiful as well. I usually play my more "acoustic" sounding cleans on the neck pickup with the tone knob rolled forward. It sounds really earthy, mellow, and resonant. Obviously, I adore this guitar and I would recommend it to anyone, Don't be turned off by the fact it's Chinese. The quality control on Ibanez products is amazing. This guitar plays like a guitar 3 times it's price.

Ibanez Artstar Series AM153

Well I have had my AM153 for 5 mo. now. Each time I play it ,it seem to get a better feel and sound! I have got a lot of different guitars as do a lot of guys , and for the money this is a guitar that you will truly enjoy to paly. The fit and finish is top notch !!!! If your thinking about buying one all I can say is DO IT !!!!

More than you considered

Where to begin...? A beautiful guitar, the pictures did not do it justice. A very high quality instrument, no corners cut. The playability was excellent, fast, smooth fretboard-love the ebony and the inlays add to the smoothness in playability. Tone-my first semi-hollowbody, wonderful sound and sustain, this may be the best part of this instrument, value is extraordinary, a steal for the price. The super 58 pick-ups are more than you would expect, very close to the classic 57's as I have read. Since I did not know much or have experience with semi-hollowbody instruments, Ben Porter, my Sales Engineer went down and played both of the instruments available and gave me his views on the tones of the two, and this was indispensible in our discussion on levels/brands and quality including the sound/tone character of these instruments. Ben is a first class individual, great service skills and music knowledge, I value our conversations. I wanted a semi-hollowbody to complete the primary array of tones/guitars that have produced the music that I have grown up with "Fender- Strat, Tele, Gibson-Les Paul, PRS,etc. ( I am 67, have had the privilege of growing in life during the great age of rock and roll, blues, country and contemporary jazz that was the 50's,60's,70"s and even from the 80's and some would say into the present day...) so, this is some degree of completion to my collection. I love the music, I love to play, getting better along the way, but always enjoying the sounds that come, having a lot of fun ! ...and no, this is not my last purchase, I am thinking of another missing tone right now...Thanks Ben and Sweetwater for another excellent experience, I do recommend Ibenez (value, quality and sound- I have a full hollowbody that is a wow also) RJ

Great hollow body

My guitar teacher had one. Week after week I'd bring in my Heritage 335-type, Heritage 339 type, Carvin koa topped hollowbody, a few Heritage Les Paul-types and one Gibson Les Paul.(Heritage makes Gibson type products out of the old Gibson Factory in Kalamazoo). Nothing could cover the sweet sound out of the AM153. The Carvin has better string definition. The 335/339 sound more 335 like. But none of them have that sweet jazz tone the AM153 has on the neck pickup in humbucker mode. Everything about the guitar was perfect at half what those other guitars cost. I was interested in this guitar for three reason: the sound, to see how good a Chinese guitar might be, and because it appeared that this guitar was a serious effort by a company with pedigree of making top quality ollow bodies for big name artists. The sound 'blooms' like no other guitar I have. The quality of the build was perfect. My impression is that this was a very serious effort to build a top- level small box hollowbody.
