One of the Better Preamps I've worked With

First off, I've tried and used a ton of preamps throughout my life mostly high end ones as a musician and audio engineer. Initially, I was miking my Fender Tube Tweed Twin Amp with a Royer 121 and an SM 81 > Pedals (including the famous Ross Compressor!) > electric guitar > Avalon AD2022 Stereo Preamp. The results were quite remarkable and I also used this preamp's Bass DI and it worked extremely well. I have to say this pre has tons I mean tons of headroom and does not clip even at high gain. In addition, it works surprisingly well with ribbon microphones such as the Royer R121 which was unexpected. The sound is transparent and clean you know what you hear is what you get and it comes with an external PSU which in my humble opinion ups the stakes for quality in preamps. Overall, I'd say this would be my go-to preamp for a plethora of things - though I planned it to be solely for acoustic instruments I actually love this preamp so much I might switch it around and make it a multitasking sort of piece of gear. Even with vocals it is remarkably well compared to my Wunder Audio PEQ2R that I use as my vocal preamp (which incidentally has EQ processing on it). I'd recommend anyone who wants the Rolls Royce of Preamps, to get this one. It is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable preamp I've had the pleasure to work with. Its worth the money. I would highly recommend this preamp to anyone who wants high end gear, high quality, and a sexy look to boot.

    Voice Over

    Pristine Clean

I run a Sennheiser 416 on one side and a Bock 241 on the other. Two Distinct sounds and the Avalon AD2022 handles them both with absolute clarity. There is no better.

    Best Kept Secret in Preamps

For over 10 years this has been our go to preamp and favorite of our engineers. It just sounds more open with more depth and musical pleasing tone than most comparable preamps. For a solid state preamp it does seem to add a magic that you wouldn't expect since it's known for being clear and clean. On gear slutz I found a shoot out between the 2022, a Pacifica and a Focusrite ISA828. All three did sound pretty good but I was surprised at how easy it was for me to pick out the 2022. (Maybe just because I use it all the time) But it clearly sounded better. I also find tracks that I record with it tend to be easier to mix. I could write tons more about this Preamp but let me sum up by saying I prefer this preamp over the Avalon 737 which is probably more popular. (That's why I say it's the best kept secret) One quick tip; don't forget to experiment with the input impedance knob. It can take a typical thin or harsh mic and warm it up considerably. You can make your cheap mics sound much better with this preamp. Try it! You won't regret it.

    Smooth Big And Open Sounding

This preamp is mind blowing the way it gets that big sound no matter what you run throw it when it comes to vocals you get that big round vocal sound bass guitars you get that extra low end quality you never heard when tracking keyboards it does some thing to the high end of the instruments that words cant explain to me this is the king of preamps and avalon design makes real high end equipment so call your sweetwater rep and order yours to day the avalon design ad2022 rocks.

    Excellent Clarity and HUGE headroom

If you already have good A/D converters and good mics, then this should be your next purchase. This preamp is what separates the home projects from the big name productions.

I run almost everything through it. Great with ribbons as well!

    Incredibly Clean!!!

This is my primary pre-amp for foley recording. We have 6 different high-end mic pre's (aka costing $2000 or more) in our studio and nothing can come close to the 2022 for headroom and it is dead quiet. The subtlest foley work will come through clean and bright with an incredibly low noise floor.

My deduction of a half point is the fact that the gain knob is stepped in increments of 4dB. I know that you can fine adjust with the output level but the problem is that when switching the gain, there is an audible bump in the audio which can distract the talent if this is used for voiceover work.

Other than that, an awesome piece of gear.
