The Perfect Small Amp

By Sweetwater Customer on March 3, 2018

First, let me say that I am very picky about my sound. I've been looking for a small amp for a few months - something that I can play at home and also at small gigs. I play mostly classic rock and blues. I bought a Fender SuperChamp X2 and returned it. Next I got a Fender Princeton 65 - returned that too. Played with a Fender Princeton 68 in the store, tried Orange Rocker 15, Marshall DSL40... each one had things I liked and things I didn't like. Then, on my way out, I saw the little Vox. I have to say that I don't like the looks of Vox amps (especially all that "gold" plastic), so I've never given them a serious consideration. This time I plugged in, and WOW!!!! So, I called my my rep Stephen at Sweetwater and asked him to send me the Sweetwater version with the Celestion Greenback. I've had the amp for about two weeks now and can't get enough of it. For a 10W amp, it has a really big sound - plenty for rehearsals and small gigs. It takes my overdrive pedals (Keeley-modded TS808 and Eternity E6) really well, and has just enough headroom. Sounds awesome both with my Strats and with my LP. The little Vox is somewhat brighter than an Orange amp, but in a good way: I can still get that classic British tone. My only hesitation was whether to go with a Vox AC15 or keep the AC10, but given my needs, the AC10 will do just fine, and at 27lbs, it's a heck of a lot easier to bring to rehearsals and gigs than the AC15.

Convert ...Believer

By Denny Mickley from Chanmbersburg PA on February 18, 2018 Music Background: Gigging Musician

I have two Ac 30 C2's (Purchased from Sweetwater)I keep one at our weekly jam we host and one in the van for our gigs. We play 50 -100 seaters 70's rock kind of thing three piece. I have two PRS SE 245 with p-90's.

I ordered the AC 10c1 w/greenback 10" to take to open mic nights (not mine).

I am floored by this amp. Clean to scream (old school) with just the volume knob. I wanted to pay some gigs with it before I posted a review. We put a mic on it but rarely turn it on (and when we do it's just for spread not volume.) It is loud in a good way.

Plug this into an extension cab and WOW! I can finally get output tube girth with out killing the dance floor.

I was concerned about the closed back cabinet heating up. But I have gigged, maybe, 6 times in the last few weeks and no issues.

AT 59 I have been playing clubs since the late 70's and have had one of everything. Price to performance this is the one!

Folks complain about the Reverb, just turn it down , I love it. The tail gets more pronounced at higher volumes. No worries, adjust. This amp is as old school cool as it gets for under $1000.00.

A second, and third are in my future!

Took some breaking in, but now I love it!

By Dan from Michigan on February 17, 2018 Music Background: 20+ year working musician

When I first fired up this amp, I didn't like it at all. It sounded thin, boxy, and very bright and harsh, which was not what I was after. I've only been playing guitar for a few of years, and had been playing through a Fender solid state Champion 40 and wanted a warmer more natural tube amp sound. What came out of the Vox wasn't it. Drew at Sweetwater did tell me when I ordered it that the speaker would need some breaking in and that's what I read on some forums too. Well, they were right. After just several hours of playing, the amp was already sounding better and now after a few weeks, it's awesome. The tone is much warmer and full, still bright but controllable, and it has that thick, punchy tube sound. So if you're like me, give it a chance to break in and you'll probably end up loving it. The tone controls on the amp, as well as on your guitar, are very interactive so you do need to learn how to set them up to get the best results. It's worth the effort. I can now get the tone I was after at quiet bedroom levels as well as at ear bleeding levels, which this amp will do in your practice room. It's a loud 10 watts! I don't gig with it, so can't say how it is at band levels. It breaks up very nicely with the gain control and can get a tone anywhere from subtle classic rock crunch to almost metal. If you want to play it clean, it does that very well also. You can get that chimey Vox tone they're famous for, but you can also dial in a more subtle jazz type sound. You should be able to get pretty much any tone you're after outside of mosquito hair band metal and you could get that with a pedal. I'm not a long time guitar player, but I am a 20+ year working keyboardist/singer/sound tech so I know what good guitar tone is. There's no effects loop, but I have a couple of effects pedals and they work very well just plugging in direct. The on board digital reverb sounds good to me also, it's very sensitive though, so a little goes a long way. A lot the demo vids out there make it sound like it's way too much, but they're always playing alone. When you put it with other instruments in a band setting, it's going to sound like a lot less. I haven't used the external speaker out, so can't comment on that, but it does you give more options for bigger tone through bigger speakers. I'm happy with the 10" internal speaker, for me it has the right amount of low end without sounding muddy. I'm not looking for a lot of bass out my guitars.

Excellent small amp

By Mark BH on January 30, 2018 Music Background: Regularly gigging musician

I am docking this a star because it improved greatly with the replacement of all four tubes. I went with JJs in the pre-amp section and Tung-Sols in the power section. It's a pretty common thing to replace tubes to dial in your sound, so that's probably not a deficiency, per se, but it improved so much it makes me wonder about the original quality of the tubes.

OK, that said, that is the ONLY potential negative. This amp sounds like 100% a Vox. I had been riding the fence between an AC15--love the sound, but bigger--and an AC4--decent sound, but too small. Lo and behold, this does the trick. Thus far, I have practiced with it in a band situation, recorded with it, and gigged with it. It does excellently in all situations. I actually had to turn it down at the gig (it was mic'd). It saturates very nicely. If you are going for a completely clean amp with lots of headroom, this isn't the amp for you, but if you like some grit, it is great. It is very responsive to pick dynamics and takes my overdrive pedals well. I like it best with my guitars that have humbuckers, but of course that's a matter of taste.

Impressive Tone

By Sweetwater Customer on January 29, 2018

The tone I'm getting from this amp is impressive. Breaks up wonderfully. For a great rock sound in a small combo amp that has plenty of volume too I highly recommend this amp. I have been using a Fender 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue since 2010 and have been really happy with that amp using an overdrive/distortion pedal with it. I really like this Vox amp much better for a crunchy rock sound by comparison and I am very pleasantly surprised with this amp.

One note, there is nothing marked on the amp to indicate it is a custom with a Greenback speaker. Just have to open the back to see it for confirmation. I do think it is worth the extra price for the speaker upgrade.

Vox AC10C1

By David from Upper Midwest, USA on January 3, 2018 Music Background: Playing for 25 years Blues and Classic Rock

Got this new Vox for Christmas. I spent a lot of time reviewing it on line. I have a Fender Blues Deluxe that is a great amp but a little heavy and loud to use at church. My son has an AC15 which I love the sound of but also 50 pounds and a little loud for Worship team. So I bought this guy at 10 watts and 27 pounds. It is everything I thought it would be. Nice chime and breaks up very fast compared to a Fender. It doesn"t have the room shaking lows of a larger amp but I did not expect that. It was nice right out of the box but I did replace the original tubes with JJ"s. I love the sound and with the Fender, a Les Paul and Stratocaster, I can get about every sound I want. Looking forward to using it a lot in the new year. Thanks Sweetwater - no tax and free shipping are a great addition to your professional sales folks!

Magic little box

By Darryl from Glen Carbon, IL on December 16, 2017 Music Background: Electric guitar enthusiest, former woking musician

I was debating between this and the AC15C1. 12" speaker vs 10". 10 watts vs 15. Two channels vs one. Tremolo, no tremolo. Rounded corners vs corner protectors ( yeah, I analyzied pretty much everything.)
I decided to go with the AC10C1 Greenback demo to save even more $. Let me start by saying that Sweetwater is the ONLY retailer to buy your gear from. I've been working with Aaron Hoff for years. It's sales engineers like Aaron that make this company great. Fantastic service, great advice and that personal touch make Sweetwater like no other. Ok, the amp. Immediately, I could not believe how full, rich and articulate the 10" Celestion Greenback is. WOW. It made my Les Paul come to life. 10 watts is perfect for home or studio use. Small gigs would be no problem. Mic it for larger venues. The sweetspot for my Les Paul seems to be with both the master volume and gain at about 2 o'clock. You'll get that great Vox breakup at a reasonable volume. There is something magical about this amp. You will enjoy the Vox sound in all its glory. ...this amp is a must for your collection. Great Vox tone at a reasonable price. I highly recommend this amp.

Sonic bliss

By Greg on December 14, 2017 Music Background: Professional musician

Pure magic! I ordered a Greenback "demo" from Sweetwater. First off the amp looked to be brand new to me. The sound from this amp is everything that the previous reviews have stated. I recently purchased a Gretsch White Penguin and wasn"t very thrilled with its tone.... until I got this amp. The Ac10 just brings guitars to life. I did have a powertube issue, however Sweetwater sent me a new pair of GT powertubes, which are an upgrade. The tubes arrived in 2 Days! Great customer service! I"ve played a few gigs with this amp and my band mates can"t believe the sound that comes from it. It"s kinda like a clown car, just when you think it"s not possible to squeeze more out.... bingo here comes another colorful offering.
I love the clean tones. I am use to "fender" cleans and open back cabinets and this is obviously different, but in a very good way. It"s just PUNCHY, notes jump off the speaker, and the TONE is just amazing. The note attack is very quick compared to the spongy nature of all my other amps. This took a moment to get used to, but I love it! It"s the most versatile l, musical sounding amp I"ve played through and it sits incredibly in the mix of a band.

Sweetness

Best 10" amp for the size, tone, sound, and fit n' finish. The Greenback is a must. I spent 4 hours last night comparing it side-by-side to my Fender Deluxe Reverb. Equally as choice. Fantastic amp.

Love it!

By Robert Basilio from Cumming, GA on November 22, 2017 Music Background: Praise & Worship

I got tired of my amp emulators being finicky. When it came to gigs, I just couldn't get a good sound, and I had always liked the AC10, so I finally just got one. Beautiful sound, the first time I've been pleased with my electric guitar tone in a gig! It's impressively loud - enough that at first I started to worry I wouldn't be able to use it at home!

It has the perfect sound for me, for all of my guitars - single coil, humbucker, and p90!

Love my little Vox

By Ric from Ludlow, MA on November 7, 2017 Music Background: Working musician

Wow, finally an amp that I can squeeze out the luscious tone out of! An amp that really lets my guitars shine from Strats to Teles to Les Pauls. 10 Watts of Tube power is so far sufficient and keeps up with loud drummers and bass players just fine. I mike it through PA for larger venues. I also have an Egnater Rebel 30 I love but it’s hard to tame. The Vox Ac10c with Greenback is working out wonderfully!

One of the best amps I have ever had

By John M from Texas on October 30, 2017 Music Background: Lead guitarist in a Worship band

This little fireball with the Greenback speaker just blew me away. I've played the stock version of the amp before and it was good but the upgraded speaker gives it a new life... less boxy sounding, more growl with the gain pushed a bit. But it still keeps that nice top end chime. It takes pedals pretty well although my HRD still is the better pedal platform IMHO. This is a great amp to just grab and go play. I'd gig with it in a heartbeat with a mic in front of it. Very responsive to the volume controls on my guitar, especially my Les Paul. Go get one! It's awesome! And Jordan Dean was a great help. Sweetwater has the best customer service than any of the other "big box" music retailers.

Never a Vox guy - now converted

By Garen A from NY on September 25, 2017 Music Background: 15+ years experience

Wow

I never gave Vox amps any credit. I always associated them with jangly bands and beatle-esque tones which was never what I was going for. In my search for a lightweight amp that could hold up in a gig or a jam I found this guy and wow am I pleased. It gets LOUD and diming the gain gives me the hardest rock tones I could ever wish for. Like, seriously. It's a firebreather at 10 on the gain. I never expected that - and all the while the clean tones are just brilliant. I highly recommend.

Awesome amp - new version of a classic

By Sweetwater Customer on July 8, 2017

The VOX AC10 is one small light but AMAZING amp!
While it is near impossible to get your hands on the 60's classic version of the AC10, this is perhaps the next best thing.
The AC10c1 hits that sweet spot of tone between being too loud and too quiet. While loud enough to do small/medium gigs, it fits perfectly as a bedroom or studio amp.
The best part of the AC10C1 is the ability to hit that super fat but clean tone with the rubbery bottom end that previously was only available in expensive vintage or boutique amps. If you want an amp that blasts out ton of watts, this ain't it... but if you are looking for the amp that matches the right volume and the right level of breakup for most situations... look no further... get the Ac10... other amps that compare would be the blues junior (slightly louder and with a mid scoop) and orange rocker 15 (also slightly louder with more of a mid push).

POWER IN A SMALL LIGHT WEIGHT BOX

By Art Martinez from California on July 7, 2017 Music Background: Worship, 60-70's rock, blues, R&B

I just received my amp this week after having played one at various music stores since the VOX ac10 first came out. I got the CST with the Greenback speak. I'm a huge Celestion fan so this was a great added bonus at a great price difference from the ac10. I took advanage of the Sweetwater "used/demo" that came available. I've never been concerned and have done this before as Sweetwater has always stood behind their sales.

Now for the 5.0 rating. This is a POWERFUL little guy, with a lot of punch. I have been running my Strats, Tele's, Gretsch Power Duo Jet and Les Paul's through it and wholly smokes, this VOX ac10 is a "keeper". I have a VOX ac15 (sold the ac30 due to weight) and still wanted a smaller amp to haul around. I'd tried this amp out and loved the ac10 version so I was excited to hear the CST version with the greenback. VOX has to be selling a ton of these little monsters. I play in a worship band that plays a lot of progressive modern songs with gusto, as well as traditional for the 3 services. I plan to run stereo with my Fender 68 Custom Princeton Reverb which should be a great stereo tone overall with my pedals as the VOX and Fender are geared to take pedals.

If you are not sure about this amp because of power, I'd say it will surprise you. NO, it is not meant for the big shows, but does super well when mic'd through the house PA and more than enough power. For coffee shops and small venues, fantastic! I have a power boost pedal which pushes the amps I owe and allows me a ton of volume. Try this little monster of an amp out and I'm sure you'll not hesitate to purchase one, especially at the phenomenal price for such a powerhouse with great tone.

Vox AC10C1 Sweetwater Custom version

By William Trahan from Alabama on July 3, 2017

This has become my favorite amp. It's the one I leave in the living room and fire up when I feel like playing. It sounds great with everything as far as single coil/double coils go. I can go from clean to dirty and it takes pedals very well. I've been playing over 40 years and have owned a lot of amps, I currently have about a dozen or so mostly tube amps or hybrids and this one stands out for the great tone it delivers. It can rattle the windows or be turned down so it doesn't drown out the TV and it always sounds great. The reverb is actually usable which isn't always the case with these combo amps. Thanks Sweetwater.
I would also like to give a special shout out to Nick Huskins who never steers me wrong and is just a great asset to Sweetwater.

Vox AC 10C1 - Celestion Greenback

By Brian S. from Arizona on May 10, 2017

I've been downsizing gear lately and this was a downsize, but not a down grade. It's very portable while being big on tone and volume for home and studio. The cleans sparkle and the dirt growls. What I like most is it lets the personality of each guitar shine through. I'm not missing an effects loop because this sounds great running pedals right into the front. I think it's great value for the money.

Great character and pedal platform

By Mark on April 13, 2017 Music Background: extreme enthusiast

I have a Marshall DSL 40c that roars with great crunch sounds but wanted another amp for mostly cleans, recording and to take all manner of guitar pedals. What a perfect purchase THIS was! When A/B'ing with my Marshall's clean sound (which the Vox now sits on top of lol), there is this marvelous clarity and bright shimmer by comparison. It just has such a great clean personality to the tone that I knew instantly I wanted it for that and to try out some pedals with it. It works GREAT as a clean or even slightly broken up bed to put all my various pedal on and is just a great compliment to my Marshalls balls out roar. The only nits I would pick is not the amps fault and that is the bass is a bit lacking but that's to be expected with a 10" speaker and I wish the controls were on the front so I could manipulate them easier while recording. It does have a speaker out jack and eventually I want to get a nice 2X12 cabinet for it.

Killer tube amp from Vox!

By James from Dallas on March 22, 2017 Music Background: Songwriter, Lead guitar

I was looking for a whole new sound. I almost always play Marshalls. I have always really liked the way Vox amps sounded. I really didn't want to invest in a head and a whole half stack just yet however. I wanted something I could play at home and also had enough to pull off smaller gigs. So glad I came across this Vox AC10C1 Custom. I am blown away!! This little beast is bad and there isn't anything little about the sound it pushes out. Mean big throaty low end, super warm mids and highs that are very tight. This amp is so cool. You can get that British 70s muddy classic rock sound without moving the gain past 2 o'clock. I'm amazed how many tones you can get from one amp just adjusting the gain and master volume. I have only just begun to explore where this thing will go.... Buy one!

AC10C1 . . .a winner

By Russ from Vermont on March 17, 2017 Music Background: sonic wanderer , been playing 45 years

This is a great , fun amp for the price and size. I've had AC15's with Alnico Blue speakers and this isn't quite all that but the AC10 is a great alternative to it. Almost half the weight of a AC15 but has the grit and chime once you dial it in. This amp is pretty loud but you won't be blowing out any windows with it. The reverb is decent for a digital. The amp has a solid build to it. It sounds great with my Strat. I also use it in tandem with a Fender Princeton and they blend nicely together. This amp does great clean, chime, and crunch tones ( think Beatles, Tom Petty, REM, Brian May, Rory Gallagher) . This amp is a solid buy if you are in the market for a lower powered amp that has some versatility. The greenback speaker is a great addition and worth the extra expense. Buy it. Play it. Turn it up.

Sweetwater/Jeff Barnett's service was the usual great, fast and on the money. Thanks , Jeff.

Love this amp!

By Nate from Pennsylvania on March 12, 2017 Music Background: Songwriter

This is exactly what I was looking for… A simple I amp with one channel that sounds fantastic both clean and pushing the drive. No doubt the greenback speaker adds cherry. It maintains both bedroom volumes, and can gig, making it a very versatile I amp. Takes petals wonderfully without an effects loop. I can't say enough about this amp. I am very happy with my purchase, and the service as always.

Seriously my best amp

By James Calderon-Campeaux from WI on February 28, 2017

I am truly blown away with this little charmer! At the suggestion of my one and only salesperson, Justin Rix I went with this "Sweetwater" special AC10. As a 65 year old retired medical profesional who has had ample time and resources to amass a sizeable collection of guitars and amps, it is not hyperbole to say that this REALLY IS THE BEST SOUNDING AMP I OWN. This little amp beats tweeds, and silverface Fenders and even my FAV "go to" amps like my Black Face Deluxe Reverb !!! I could not be happier with my consumate Sweetwater experience and salesperson. The SWEETWATER CUSTOM, sings, growls and any tone on the whole gamut, handles all my pedals and whether it be a Fender Guitar new or vintage, a Gibson or Epi Les Paul or even my National played clean, this honey makes them all sound like butter. Simply put, THIS IS THE BEST AMP I PERSONALLY HAVE EVER HEARD !Thank you Justin and Sweetwater.

My Favorite Vox Amp

By Dude1234 from Virginia on February 22, 2017

You know those reviews you occasionally see that claim this amp sounds better than the AC15? Well, add mine to that list. The AC15C1 is a great amp - I had the Greenback model. But somehow the AC10C1 sounds closer to an AC30, in my head at least. And I think anyone who buys any model Vox amp is secretly wishing they had an AC30. I had an AV4TVH and an AC4C1-12. Both of those amps had very cool tone but also had a "small amp" sound to them. I'm not sure why, but the AC10C1, even with its 10" speaker, sounds larger than the AC4C1-12 with a 12" speaker. Note that my amp has a stock VX-10 speaker and I think it sounds great. If you get the one equipped with a Greenback, my guess is that it could only sound even better.

Great amp!

By Zachary Murphy from Pulaski, VA on February 5, 2017 Music Background: Amateur musician / amp nerd.

This is a wonderfully sounding small amp. Responds well to touch and pick attack through the whole volume range. No, it doesn't get Fender clean, but it does that nice classic crunch better than any other amp in the price range, and better than many that cost a lot more. The digital reverb is a little touchy and past noon on the dial, it's just too "surf" sounding for my liking, but it does sound good. This amp is an especially good bargain with the Celestion Greeenback already installed. The amp is very loud for 10 watts, but it also sounds great at bedroom levels. The only downside would be the cheap Chinese tubes. You won't really appreciate the potential of this amp until you put some good quality tubes in there. The bass and treble controls are very usable. There are a wide range of tones available if you take time and move the knobs around. The amp seems to take pedals well, especially tube screamer types that give a mid boost. For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with little amp.

Fantastic Tone

By Voxguy from USA on January 26, 2017

Fantastic tone from this thing and it takes all my pedals well. I was worried about it sounding small, boxy and cheap after having owned several blues Jr's that I was never fully happy with. Not the case at all with this little monster. Very open sounding and can get as loud as you want. This amp sounds just as good and possibly better in some ways than my Ac15 with a Celestion blue in it. This is my first amp with a 10" speaker and it seems to have more bottom end and punch than my ac15 which I find interesting. Maybe its the closed back giving it that. The weight is a plus and will be easy for practices and possibly gigs. My tele's sound rich and full and my Les Paul sounds fantastic.

Brilliant

By Rick Mangan from Washington on January 10, 2017

Great throaty tone. Doesn't really have a clean tone, but I didn't really buy it for a clean tone. Perfect size, shape, and weight (light with a heavy sound). Love it.

JUST WHAT I WANTED

By MARK from CALIFORNIA on January 8, 2017 Music Background: SEMI-PRO

GOT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TIRED OF LUGGING MY AC15 IN AND OUT OF GIGS. THE HOPE WAS THAT I COULD GET THE VOLUME I NEEDED,(NO PROBLEM) AND THE TONE I GET FROM THE 15 BUT SAVE THE OLD BACK FOR THE ENERGY NEEDED TO PERFORM FOR 3 HOURS PLUS. THE AMP DOES EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO DO. I GOT THE UPGRADED SWEETWATER VERSION WITH THE CELESTION GREENBACK SO CAN'T SPEAK TO THE TONE OF THE STOCK SPEAKER. FOR THE EXTRA 50 BUCKS I THINK IT IS WORTH IT

Excellent Amp

By Tom Mc from Miami Lakes FL. on December 21, 2016

This is the first Vox that I have ever bought, I have a variety of amps, Carr, Fender, Mesa Boogie, Carvin and this AC10c1 holds its own among the crowd. It has a character of just being on the edge of breakup at lower volumes, and has a very harmonic grind when being pushed. Im not a gigging musician any longer so I can't say whether or not its loud enough in a band setting. Overall this is a really good amp, well worth the $$$.

Significant Upgrade

By Manimal from Portland, OR on October 19, 2016

I also own a Vox AC10 with the regular Celestion VX speaker, so I'm comparing this one with the upgraded Celestion Greenback to my regular one. At this point, I've played the new one at 4 gigs and multiple rehearsals; the speaker has about 40 hours of playing time at volume, so it's broken in. The Celestion Greenback is a serious improvement over the VX. Tighter and slightly more prominent lows, warmer mids, and similar but glassier highs. Overall, I'd say the improvement in sound would absolutely be worth it to buy the speaker aftermarket. Fortunately, Sweetwater has taken care of that for us, and at a much discounted rate.

If you haven't heard the AC10 yet, this is a WONDERFUL amp. Much, much better sounding than the Blues Jr., though not quite as loud. Whereas a Blues Jr. has a very midrangey, in your face tone, the AC10 is more balanced, with sweeter highs and much more present lows. I actually like the digital reverb on the AC10, and use it quite a bit when I play clean or with just a touch of distortion. The AC10 distorts in that great, classic Vox way; don't expect it to do hard rock or metal without some assistance, but for classic rock crunch to clean, this cannot be beat. Yes, the AC15 is louder, and does sound a bit bigger, but I got really tired of hauling around a 50 pound amp, and the AC10 is lightweight. No problem keeping up with a drummer, though it won't do pristine clean and keep up with a heavy hitter. If you're thinking about picking up an AC10, I strongly encourage you to spend the extra 50 bucks to get the upgraded speaker. It's more than worth it. Thanks again, Sweetwater.

Ac10

By Maurice from California on October 14, 2016 Music Background: Big Mo & The Full Moon Band 10 pc all original Blues/Southern Rock/Funk

I have gone through so many amps. The latest a Two Rock $8000.00 amp.
I must now admit that this $499.00 amp blows them all away.
You will not encounter a cheap breakup with this amp if you stay somewhere in the middle volume settings.
I use it for all of my shows small or large. I am buying a second one :-) I have them on amp stands facing me on stage so I can enjoy their great sound. This amp allows me to change the sound by just hitting the strings harder and or adjusting the volume. I use a volume pedal for them. I am very impressed and thank Vox for making the amp I always looked for :-) Oh did I mention how lightweight it is

Vox AC10 Custom

By Mike from Sturgeon Bay, WI on October 7, 2016 Music Background: Hobbyist now but used to gig for many years

I have many other larger and smaller tube amps. I was looking for something that sounds great, takes pedals well and is easy to move around the house. I've always been a fan of Vox chime but never pulled the trigger on a Vox. This little amp delivers on all counts. I think depending on how much of a gusto your drummer brings to his impacts on the skins, this could be a gig worthy amp for a small club. Adjusting the gain and volume in ANY combination produces fantastic usable sounds. I do not miss the absence of the effects loop. The AC10 Custom accepts pedals great plugging straight in old school. This simple straight forward amp sounds way better than its meager price. It really is a deal.

Vox AC10 w/ celestion greenback

By Joe from San Antonio on October 4, 2016

Great sounding amp, those 10 watts can get loud! Great tone you would expect from a vox and love the speaker upgrade, ( even though I don't know how yhe original speaker sounded) but the celestion greenback sounds great. Sweetwater is a great company to by from and will definitely be buying more gear from them.

Vox AC Custom with Greenback Speaker

By Chris from Pennsylvania on September 15, 2016

I picked this up a few weeks ago since I've been looking to minimize my rig and use a simpler set up. Something where i don't need to worry about the effects loop and using the channels on an amp. This was perfect. Kinda just plug and go. I have it set to where it just about breaks up and I use an overdrive and boost pedal to put it over the top. It breaks up at the perfect stage volume where I'm not bothering everyone else. The added built in digital reverb is a nice touch, but use it more as a "less is more" mind set. It gets too washy anywhere after 9 o'clock. Since I play weekly, it's nice to make one trip from the car to the venue. I couldn't be any happier with my Sales Engineer Pat. He provides me with the best knowledge of gear and helps me decide if it is worth it for my gigging needs. And the gear always arrives quickly and safely! I would recommend this amp to anyone who is looking into a simple plug and play, low watt amp, that loves the classic Vox tone.

Vox ac10 with greenback

I bought this amp as a demo (saved 50 clams) and all I have to say is that it sounds awesome with my tele. The clean headroom is just great and when you crank up the gain it just sounds magical. The bass tone don't get flabby with the greenback while the mids and highs get more defined. Aaron C. at Sweetwater emailed me saying they had a demo model available and I bought it. Amp came well packed and included the Sweetwater candy. I haven't had any problems with loose tube or tube rattle and I've been died this amp out on several occasions. If your sitting on the fence with this amp just go for it, you won't be disappointed. If your the patient type let your Sweetwater rep know to inform you when a demo becomes available, it will save you some money and the speaker will be broken in with the same Sweetwater warranty.

Vox AC10 Custoom

Amp suffers from the dreaded tube rattle. Once that is fixed I may have a higher opinion. Sweetwater service is great, however. They had to send me three of these amps because the first two both powered up but did not produce any sound. Third one worked but soon developed the tube rattle. I hate to send this one back because the sales engineer and everyone else worked hard to solve the problems with the first two non working amps and couldn't have been nicer. Quality on these Ac10s is obviously lower than on my 1990s British made Ac15.

Vox AC10 Sweetwater Exclusive w/Celestion Greenback

By Roger from St Petersburg on July 24, 2016 Music Background: musician/player since the Beatles went on Ed Sullivan

Turned it on and let it warm up for a bit, then plugged a Strat in and got a whisper of raspy sound. YIKES!!! Shut it down and opened the back, which I'd of gotten around to eventually and found one of the 12ax7's loose and at an angle. Pushed it in and fired it back up holding my breath. BAZINGA! Whoo-hoo glorius sound. I have gravitated to 15 watt or less amps over the years and this puppy is the crown jewel of the 5 I already had. It is impossible to get a bad sound out of this amp. Tried a stock AC10 and the Greenback installed is a real improvement, and as it breaks in should get even better. The controls are simple and very effective. The treble and bass interact beautifully and can dial in superb sounds at any volume and really provide that famous Vox Chime. The reverb is very nice and while kept to lower levels it is an integral part of that Vox Mystic. The Gain and volume really let you dial in the perfect amount of grind to that wonderful clean. While 10 watts doesn't sound like a lot this is a loud little bugger that sounds terrific at lower volume too. Topping it all off is that Classic Vox look. I've played my Teles, Strats and Jaguar through it, blissful. The Gibsons and Epiphones are wonderful as well. I have wanted to get a full on tube Vox for some years now but didn't want to deal with the size/weight of the AC15/30 amps, this AC10 with the Greenback Celestion really fit the bill. I kept going back to the ad and adding it to the cart, then deleting it...finally pulled the trigger after several days of that nonsense. and am I glad I did. If your looking for a small/lightweight tube amp this is one of the more righteous ones you'll find. It'll work well for just about any type of music except maybe Metal...but that isn't what you'd buy a Vox amp for anyway. I'd HIGHLY recommend this versatile amp for beginner or pro, it's a hands down winner in it's class but ranks way above it's weight.
