Simply the best...

By Ron from Seattle, WA on June 15, 2014 Music Background: Musician, composer, recording engineer.

I own and have owned a number of good and great mic preamps and the LaChapell 992EG is simply my all time favorite. It has even replaced my expensive multi tube channel strip for vocals. Even without EQ, compression, and effects, the vocals I've tracked with the 992 sound beautiful and sit in a mix just right. Looking for the right stereo mic pre to record my grand piano has been a decade long journey that ended the minute I plugged my matched pair of Schoeps CMC64's into my 992. Solo through this pre, my piano sounds big, warm and present while still capturing the intimate nuances of the instrument. The depth and detail is simply amazing. I've also had great success using the 992 as a DI for electric guitar, bass, electric piano and percussion. Some tube mic pre's are noisy but not the 982EG. I have a rather large collection of original music cues that I had written and recorded prior to 1995 for various film, cable and broadcast projects. I ran the audio from these tracks from a DAT deck directly into my 992 and then into my DAW and the difference was stunning. Kind of an audio sweetening/remastering process that allowed me to breathe life into old tracks and make them viable again. I could go on and on but the bottom line is that in my opinion nothing sounds better or is more flexible than a LaChapell 992EG. I will admit that I upgraded this mic pre with New Old Stock Telefunken 12AX7's which is just like adding a really great frosting to an amazing cake. Of the four stereo mic preamps that I currently own, my first stop when tracking is always the 992EG.

A Flagship Mic Pre

By Andy Swanson from San Luis Obispo, CA on December 14, 2011 Music Background: Producer

The best way to describe this mic pre is to borrow a line from A Christmas Story... "It's indescribably beautiful."

Everything you put through it sounds fabulous. Drums sound huge, acoustic guitars sound rich and vocals just shine. There is so much room here to go from a subtle tube warmth to a squashed overdriven sound. It took me a bit to get used to the input and output sections and how to dial them in right, but now I love how versatile this can be. It has become the flagship pre in my studio. I almost always start with the 992 as it just has a way of getting the tone I want.
