A Nylon-string Guitar With the Taylor Touch!

Sure, the Taylor 814ce-N is a nylon-string classical acoustic-electric guitar, but the first time your hand caresses the slender, fast neck and its ebony fingerboard, you're in another world altogether. This guitar's supremely comfortable Grand Auditorium body resonates richly, while the ES-N electronics organically amplify every nuance of your playing. You'll hear a richer voice, with more complex harmonics and a more open sound that's incredibly vibrant. The secret is that Taylor optimized the wood thickness and bracing patterns to give you the best that the Grand Auditorium design has to offer. True to Taylor, the guitar's breathtaking visuals are punctuated with classy, understated touches. It's in the playing, though, that the Taylor 814ce-N acoustic-electric nylon-string guitar will win your heart.

Taylor 814ce-N Nylon-string Classical Acoustic-electric Guitar at a Glance:
  • A richer, more vibrant voice than ever before thanks to customized bracing
  • Grand Auditorium body style, for exceptional resonance and clarity
  • Exceptional tone, volume, and balance thanks to custom-tailored wood thickness
  • Premium plugged-in tone with Taylor's ES-N electronics
A richer, more vibrant voice than ever before thanks to customized bracing

You'll notice that the Taylor 814ce-N boasts exceptionally vibrant tones with a unique character. Taylor went back to the drawing board and redesigned their bracing patterns, to get the optimum response out of each of their iconic body shapes. Taylor even added side bracing to add rigidity to the sides and enhance top and back movement. In the words of luthier Andy Powers, the updated Advanced Performance bracing pattern gives the updated 814ce-N a "nice, cushy swell and long sustain, even with a delicate touch."

Grand Auditorium body style, for exceptional resonance and clarity

Taylor's beloved Grand Auditorium body style employs the width and depth of the Dreadnought. However, its waist is narrower, which gives Grand-Auditorium-bodied acoustic guitars a sleeker look, with more treble zing. The Taylor 814ce-N's body style also helps to sharpen the definition of each note. When used for a traditionally small-bodied classical instrument, the sonic result is breathtaking - and like nothing you've heard before.

Exceptional tone, volume, and balance thanks to custom-tailored wood thickness

One of the things we like best about Taylor at Sweetwater is that their various body styles are designed for specific purposes, allowing you to choose a guitar that's the perfect match for your style. With the 814ce-N, Taylor takes that to another level by carefully matching the thickness of the spruce top and rosewood back and sides to the body style. They determined what the optimum wood thickness for the 814ce-N's Grand Auditorium body would be, to give you maximum tone and light weight while also being equally strong. Taylor is also using real animal protein glue (fish, in fact) instead of synthetic glue. Luthiers have been using protein glues for centuries for their incredible strength, and also for their tone. Protein glue optimizes transfer of vibrations and also holds amazingly well, which means you're sure to get a lifetime of fantastic tone from the Taylor 814ce-N acoustic-electric guitar.

Premium plugged-in tone with Taylor's ES-N electronics

Designed to faithfully reproduce the Taylor 814ce-N's native tone, Taylor's ES-N system uses patented Dynamic Sensors - optimized for nylon strings - to capture top and string vibration like never before. The Taylor ES-N system is seamlessly integrated into the design of the guitar from the ground up. You can use the onboard tone controls to give your sound added flavor, or set them flat if you want an uncolored, exceptionally clean sound.

Taylor 814ce-N Nylon-string Classical Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:
  • Grand Auditorium body style gives you a dreadnought-esk projection with a more expressive upper register
  • Sitka spruce top provides a light and expressive sound
  • Indian rosewood back and sides add clarity and projection
  • Graceful Venetian cutaway gives you access all the way up the fingerboard

Hybrid magic

This guitar is as playable and beautiful as promised...flawless construction and attention to detail...absolutely on target intonation and remarkable sustain and note life given that it is a fairly light guitar. I am used to 2" nut width anyway, but the 1 7/8" width makes the neck nice and silky...ES-N electronics seem a little soft in output compared to other guitars (I only do finger style); I think this is intentional to give the player more control of the dynamic range; just raise the amp's pre-amp stage gain...it has no on-board tuner, so have a clip-on ready...Not sure I like the factory's high tension strings...going to experiment with some of my aftermarket faves...

Never played a better Nylon

This particular one I have seems to have some magic in it. It really comes alive, unlike any guitar I have ever played before. But I don't know if they are all like that, (since it's a Taylor I'd be willing to bet they are all pretty close), but I don't have a place anywhere near me that stocks several of these for me to compare them (this guitar is more expensive than anything they have behind the glass at guitar center, which is the best music store anywhere near where I live. (yeah I know.) After looking at every review I could find online (all the youtube videos of this one or anything close to it, which were very few) I decided to take the plunge on one, and it has not disappointed me in the slightest way. The total opposite in fact, I am absolutely floored by it. Granted, I'm not a traditional classical player. So maybe the layout (string spacing and neck width, cutaway, (or truss rod! :P) might not be to the liking of traditional classical players. But as for comfort, set up, and absolutely stunningly beautiful tone, and spot on PERFECT intonation all over the neck, plus simple, tasteful, non-flashy gorgeous looks, and a sense/feel of superb quality/craftsmanship/engineering, it's top notch. This is the best guitar I have ever bought of any kind. It knocks me out every time I play it. Really, I would like to give a more critical review, instead of barraging you with superlatives. But honestly, there is nothing negative that I can think of to say about this guitar. It's amazing. (To be fair, I don't own or have access to a pile of $3K+ classical guitars to compare it to. So take it for what it's worth I guess.) The only downside I can see is that I would never take it out in public where it might get damaged. I'll have to transition back to my Cordoba (Fusion 14 RS) for any of that. (Which is a pretty good guitar, and sounds lovely, but is nowhere near this level, and suffers from minor intonation issues. (This guitar will solve that problem in spades, and add a healthy dose of "OH MY GOD..." to boot.. :) Maybe it could be a bit better as a custom shop special in wild figured Brazilian (yeah...) with some magic spruce (or cedar) top they have squirreled away somewhere, and some tasty (non-flashy) wooden inlays on the fretboard. (ala the current Koa series inlays, but more custom or one-of-a-kind) But then it would probably cost 5 times more... But I think that's about the only way to improve it from here. If you like the style, and are looking to upgrade, BUY ONE! You won't be disappointed.

Great Playability

I have stayed away from Taylor for no real reason other than being a Gibson / Martin player for decades. This 814ce-N is a game changer for me. Great finish and workmanship and a neck I still am enjoying more each time I pick it up.The ES2 - Just OK - still need to run it through Fishman products to get the sound I want.
