Portable High-resolution Field Recorder

The 2-channel 702 is a powerful file-based digital audio recorder. The compact device records and plays back audio to cost-effective, removable Compact Flash cards, making field recording simple and fast. It writes and reads uncompressed PCM audio at 16 or 24 bits with sampling rates between 32kHz and 192kHz. Compressed (MP3) audio playback is also supported.

  • Pro features, compact size, ease of use
  • Reliable CompactFlash storage
Premium preamps for high-bandwidth recording

The 702 implements a no-compromise audio path that includes Sound Devices' next-generation microphone preamplifiers. Designed specifically for high-bandwidth, high-bit-rate digital recording, these preamps set a new standard for frequency response linearity, low distortion performance, and low noise.
Pro features, compact size, ease of use
Few recorders on the market match the 702's size or feature set. In addition, its learning curve is quite short - powerful does not mean complicated. While the 702T is a very capable recorder by itself, it truly excels when used in conjunction with an outboard audio mixer such as Sound Devices' own 442 or 302.
Reliable CompactFlash storage
The 702's CompactFlash storage is a highly-reliable industry standard. The removable, rechargeable battery is the popular Sony-compatible Li-ion camcorder cell. The 702 interconnects with Windows and Mac OS computers for convenient data transfer and backup.

Sound Devices 702 Digital Recorder Features:
  • Two channels of Sound Devices next-generation microphone preamps with phantom, limiters, and highpass filters

Sound Devices 702

For stereo, 2 tracking, back up or adding 2 more channels (analog or digital) to a pre-existing set up NOTHING beats this for quality, ease of use, connectivity and reliability. I do a weekly gig, usually with a laptop but don't need it and heavy preamps and their power supplies and cords for the typical 2 tracks I record. One of the usual members who attends these gigs asked me "What happened? I liked watching the computer program and all the complicated screens?" - No need anymore. If you are hedging on this MY ADVICE IS SOUND DEVICES. Thanks to Joe James at Sweetwater for making this an easy and enjoyable purchase - a great guy to speak with about products or even Chicago pizza.

This is the answer

I literally LOVE the Sound Devices 702. I’ve been using mic pres like the Apogee Ensemble (an excellent device, don’t get me wrong) and lugging it around in a "portable" rack containing a MacBook Pro, a power conditioner, and a mile-long power chord. Taping down the cables and chords and tearing them back up again was very frustrating, especially while wearing orchestral concert dress. Getting sick of that, I realized battery power was the way to go and researched the 702. Set up takes ¼ the time it used to and the quality of the recording is stunning. The thing is so little you can hang it right on the mic stand -- such a small footprint! – so there are no mic cables to tape down, none on the floor at all. The device and the CF card are actually easier to use and far more reliable than computer hardware and recording software. Also, you simplify your recording pathway, and thus its quality, by removing the mic pre driver software, the recording software, the computer, and the polluted wall power from the path. It’s just the mics and your 702 leaving the software and the computer for what they’re really good for back in the studio. Plus it’s made in the USA; similar recorders on the market either have QA issues or are Swiss made with mountain-high Swiss prices.

Love this unit!

At risk of sounding like a grumpy old guy, I'll start by saying that so much of what is made today is garbage. Not this unit. Well made, compact (roughly the footprint of a medium-sized novel), and fairly straight-forward learning curve. And -- most importantly -- it sounds great. I use it for recording interviews I video tape, but have also recorded music with it. Paired with a great mic, this thing rocks! It is expensive. But you get what you pay for.
