Big Tone from a Small Amp Head

Don't let its small size fool you - the Peavey 6505 Piranha 20-watt amplifier packs the tonal tenacity that Peavey's 6505 series is known for. With a single 12AX7 tube added to the solid-state gain structure, this small amp head will make your guitar sound like a beast through larger speaker cabinets. A front-panel switch toggles Crunch and Lead modes. The effects loop gives you more options for integrating effects pedals and also allows you to use the 6505 Piranha as a "preamp driver" - simply connect the effects loop send to the input of a separate amplifier. And while it has the goods to be your main gigging amplifier, the Peavey Piranha is also the most size- and space-efficient backup amplifier you could ask for.

Peavey 6505 Piranha 20-watt Amplifier Head at a Glance:
  • Compact hybrid amp design
  • Effects loop offers pedal flexibility and creative potential
  • Built to last
Compact hybrid amp design

The Peavey 6505 Piranha is small, only slightly larger than a thick paperback book and weighing in at only 2.5 lbs. That's made possible by its solid-state power amp stage, yet Peavey found room to add a 12AX7 tube to the gain structure to add real tube harmonics to your tone. The 6505 Piranha delivers 20 watts to a 4-ohm cab, 15 watts to an 8-ohm cab, and 10 watts to a 16-ohm cab.

Effects loop offers pedal flexibility and creative potential

When we first saw the Peavey 6505 Piranha at Sweetwater, we were pleased to see an effects loop onboard, which is often omitted from compact amps such as the Piranha. Of course the effects loop is the perfect place to place time-based effects like delay and reverb pedals, but it also offers creative potential. By connecting the effects loop send of the 6505 Piranha to the input of a different amplifier, you can use the Piranha for tone shaping and to hit the preamp of the second amp hard. If you record guitar amps in your studio regularly, the 6505 Piranha is a compact and inexpensive way to expand your sonic options.

Built to last

Peavey has earned a reputation for creating reliable gear that works well for decades, and it shows in the 6505 Piranha. As soon as you get it out of the box, you'll be reassured by its build quality, despite its small size and light weight.

Peavey 6505 Piranha 20-watt Amplifier Head Features:
  • Hybrid amplifier head with one 12AX7 preamp tube and a solid-state power amp
  • Switch between Crunch and Lead modes for 2 distinct guitar voicings
  • Effects loop allows for integrating effects pedals or using as a preamp driver
  • Headphone output and aux input for practicing
  • Delivers 20 watts into 4 ohms, 15 watts into 8 ohms, or 10 watts into 16 ohms
The Peavey 6505 Piranha packs the sonic fury of Peavey's 6505 series.

the little fish with a big bite

first off while this is a 6505 it is not like the full blown versions that peavey sells, but again for the price of a average guitar pedal what do you expect. what you can expect is a really cool mean little amp that you can have fun. do not listen what other people have said about the limitations of this mini head it is great for just playing or jamming or practicing. no need to put pedals in front of this just plug in and play you can not get a bad sound. You can take the effects send port in the back and run it into input of another amp as a preamp and get a decent sound. I did not have a 4 ohm cab and I also got the piranha and the piranha cab for xmas so I got the complete stack. I have this small package on a shelf and it kicks, the cab sounds really good and it is so compact. the leds lights in the head light up and along with the real tube glows like a small fireplace in the dark. Is it perfect, no but a heck of a lot of fun. I do wish that peavey would have put a white colored piranha on top of the head instead of black but I think that peavey hit a homer on this. as the title of on of mick ronson's album "play don't worry"

Great little practice amp!

Why am I blown away? People might be mistaking low to with articulation. It has plenty of gain AND i don't use an OD pedal. I did use a MXR EQ to get an unbelievable sound out of it...using no other pedals save a tuner. However i was happy with it's tone without using any pedals. Its a great amp and does have great tone! I have it paired with its little 1x8 cab. Blown away due to the tone, price, big voice, simplicity and size. If you are a metal head and want that CRAZY tone i'm loving...i advise using an'll let you kick up the upper mids and highs...kick up the bass a bit...and boom! It'll be rocking had and the 6505 badge all of a sudden makes sense!

All things considered it is an low wattage amp every guitar player could use in some way.

Great amp for price. Not a 6505

Simple review. I own a 6505+ and love everything about it. I no longer gig or play live so wanted something with a similar tone that I can play in my apartment. While the Piranha sounds great and for the price is a good sounding amp, it doesn't have enough gain to even be in the same sentence as the 6505 legacy. Even with an OD boosting this amp you still won't get the crushing tones of its predecessors. Nice sounding amp for the money, it just needs to be re badged. I do enjoy this amp quite a bit, however not what I expected.

Didn't like it.

Just wasn't the sound that I was looking for. Fun to jam with, but didn't sound well recorded
