Surprise

I bought this set for my son and was very pleasantly surprised at the quality and sound. Often when purchasing a set and value is the main concern, one will receive quality and value with this set. You cannot go wrong with this purchase.

Great Starter Pack, but not Performance quality

First off, this is a great value pack for any beginning drummer who wants some flashy cymbals. The 16" crash sounds great and cuts through well at any dynamic, and the ride also has a very rich, deep crash sound; however, I was disappointed in the harsh ping it produced when played in any softer jazz context. It has a large dome that rings well when hit with the shoulder of the stick, but is not anything desirable when hit with the tip of your stick. Definitely a ride cymbal intended for rock, and not the same professional sound you could get out of an AAX or HHX model. I have found that with the right sticks, focusing on the outer rim of the cymbal at low volume still provides a smooth ride in a pinch. The hi-hats sound a little above average for their price range, but again, to an experienced drummer, will not provide the infamous "chick" we all want to have on our left foot. The 14" crash is certainly the poorest sound out of them all, resonating at a higher pitch that sounds close to a splash but still tinny like a cheap cymbal. That said, it still compliments the larger crash nicely (when hit BEFORE the other crash), and adds the additional value to this cymbal pack to make it worth every dollar. In summary, if you're still relatively new to drumming or on a tight budget, this is a great purchase to make and will not leave you disappointed. However, if you've been drumming for a long time and want a real quality sound that could actually do live performances, look into the AAX or HHX cymbal line. (Or you could just blow the roll on some Zildjians if you've got that kind of cash)
Music background: Drummer of 13 years, still on 'Hobbyist' level because I'd rather not record with these cymbals
