superb instrument

(i've played bass for 38 years at the time of writing, and currently own 24 basses.) after hearing rob mullarkey play one, i decided i needed a 44-51. i had to wait a long time. nobody seems to stock them (even sweetwater perpetually says "more on the way"), but finally sweetwater put a demo up for sale and i jumped on it right away. aside from a couple very minor aesthetic points*, i haven't found anything that i don't like about this bass (and i'm a picky, critical SOB). the fit and finish are solid and beautiful. all the components are top quality. the tone kills, a lovely, warm, woody organic sound that breathes without sacrificing punch. the 3-piece ash body is very nicely matched and lovely to look at. the satin-finished neck is slinky and comfortable to play, solid but not chunky. it's comfortable and well-balanced, thanks in part to the lightweight tuners. setup was perfect out of the box, but since i bought a demo, i don't know if that was lakland or sweetwater. bottom line: looks great, sounds great, fun to play, which makes me play better. five stars. * the minor aesthetic points: 1) i would prefer a single-bobbin pickup; i'm not a fan of the split-coil style. 2) the oval-shaped bridge ...well, it's just ugly. but these are just matters of personal taste.

Wonderful Bass

I am not sure I can say enough about my Skyline 44-51. Initially I couldn't stop looking at the wood grain on the neck and body, just beautiful pieces of wood. The pickup has some punch, which is great. I recently put some flats on it, and didn't have to do much after the change to get the action and intonation dialed in. Just so much fun to play, with a really comfortable neck. Wonderful instrument for the price, if you are looking for a '51 inspired bass.

Great Bass

First I would like to thank Dontae my sales engineer for helping me with the purchase of this bass. I was looking for a new bass and love the sound of a P bass but not the biggest fan of the neck. So I called Dontae and we had quite a lengthy conversation about what I was looking for and during the conversation the Lakland basses were brought up. So I went to the showroom and spent quite a bit of time playing a lot of different guitars but kept going back to the Laklands. Let me tell you these basses are amazing the fret work is 2nd to none. So if your in the market for a new bass do your self a favor and give a Lakland a shot.

Best bass I've ever owned

The Skyline 44-51 is by far and large the best bass I've ever owned, played, picked up, looked at etc... This bass is the total package. For one, if you like tonal versatility the Neopunch pickups that Lakland installs in these are great. You can go from extremely punchy and gritty to tubby and warm in a matter of turning your volume and tone knobs. This bass is one of the loudest basses I've ever owned as well, which can be a detriment the first time working with it, however; the tonality of it is so great that it really doesn't matter. The finish on this bass looks great, has a nice vintage feel to it, and the neck is extremely comfortable. The neck is a mix between a J and a P, which I prefer a Precision, but find that this neck is more suited to my needs. It plays fast, but at the same time has enough fight that it makes playing enjoyable. If you've never played a Lakland before (even if it's a Skyline) I recommend trying it before dropping a bunch of money on an American made Fender. These basses are the real deal and a joy to play.
