The Iconic Rickenbacker Bass

Roundabout. The sound of that legendary Yes bass line is seared into the auditory memory of many of the musicians here at Sweetwater: an early-1960s Rickenbacker 4001S strung with round-wounds. With their punchy treble, solid bottom end, and ringing sustain, Rickenbacker basses helped forge the sound of classic rock in the capable hands of progressive bassists such as Chris Squire and Paul McCartney. It's an iconic sound, and there's only one way to get it. Today's formidable Rickenbacker 4003S delivers those inimitable bass tones in a sleek instrument that's primed for a new millennium. Forge your own legendary sound with the Rickenbacker 4003S bass.

All-maple construction for iconic sustain and treble punch

The Rickenbacker 4003S is crafted from high-grade maple. Maple is very stable, aiding in maintaining the structural integrity of the neck, which runs through the entire length of the body. The density of maple - and the neck-through design - is largely responsible for the instrument's famous treble punch and sustain. The thick rosewood fingerboard adds a touch of warmth and harmonic complexity, balancing out the bright high end with strong, rich bass. The 4003S's unique body shape and dot inlays give it the traditional Rickenbacker bass look.

Rickenbacker 4003S Features:
  • An iconic bass, immortalized by Paul McCartney and Chris Squire
  • Maple body and through-neck, for serious sustain and treble zing
  • Thick rosewood fingerboard adds warmth and harmonic richness
  • 2 single-coil pickups deliver the classic Rick bass sound
  • Three-way selector with 2 tone and 2 volume controls
  • Schaller Deluxe tuners are stage rugged and studio dependable
Play a rock icon: the Rickenbacker 4003S!

4003s Bass

Excellent bass ,fit and finish is superb , setup was right on . This is my second Rickenbacker bass , I have a 4001 that I got in 1973 and this one is just as good as it , Plays and sounds as it should , only thing I will change is the round wound strings , I have always liked flats .The Rickenbacker case looks to be good . I like the fireglo color it;s a great finish .Looking forward to many hours of recording with it , My thanks to Joe James and the guys , always great service .

Finally got a Ric!!

The wife was tired of competing on Christmas gifts and wanted to put me in my place, well she did in a big way! One trip to Sweetwater was all it took; I'm super glad we live close to the store! I had a Fender bass back in high school, some 30 years ago, and have played stand up bass on and off since. So this Christmas she surprised me with the 4003S in Fireglo....awesome in every way! I'm glad she picked out the S. The bass is more rounded and really comfortable to just sit around and play. In my opinion, the stereo effects on the 4003 is just not needed. This bass sounds incredible! I've tried it through my Crate amp and also an old tube Fender bassman....this thing has punch no matter what you hook it too. I am going to run this through my Mackie SRM450's next for a structural check of the house, can't wait! Maybe I have grown immune to poor action in a bass since I've played stand up bass for all of these years, but the set up on this Ric is truly incredible. It is effortless to play, very low string height, and, it takes very little pressure on your plucking fingers to get incredible thump...enabling much quicker speed. The craftsmanship on the body and paint is top notch, perfect. And finally, this thing is made in the USA! Without question, this bass will be staying in the family for a long time!! Thank you Rickenbacker and Sweetwater.

Classic Rickenbacker bass!

Not having the binding and block inlays is what appealed to me. The plain dot inlays and smooth edges make this Rickenbacker 4003S look sleek. I recently saw a photo from the 1960s of a similar Rickenbacker and liked what I saw (dot inlays, smooth edges). Like most basses, this has a single mono jack (and I've never cared for the Rick-o-Sound double jack since you can route to many different channels on the mixer). I love the 4003S and yes, it sounds like a Geddy Lee or Chris Squire bass! LOVE IT!!!
Music background: Musician

Regularly gigging musician for 35 years...played 'em all, loved a few, liked a lot...always wanted a Ric in Fireglo, for whatever number of reasons it kept itself just barely out of reach over my lifetime. Until now. All the stars finally aligned and I pulled the trigger...a 4003S Fireglo, in 2 days it became my favorite of the herd. My band members immediately noticed how awesome it sounded in the mix. It is definitely NOT a 1-trick pony as many think. I've played it all from the Beatles to Slayer and this thing delivers ever single time, no disappointments. It is easy to play, it looks sexy as h*** and the tones, OMG the tones...get one, its that simple. Frank G, my Sweetware rep, always works hard to make sure I am happy and always delivers. A win/win. Seriously considering letting a few high end Fender's go and replacing them with RIcs...
