Sounds Like a Vintage Martin, Plays Like a Modern Masterpiece

The 00-28VS acoustic guitar takes Martin's acclaimed 12-fret body style to a new level of class (and collector's status!). That's because this beautiful Vintage Series acoustic instrument features a beautifully figured East Indian rosewood body. The expertly-inlayed grained-ivoroid body binding shows the care and detail Martin put into re-creating this iconic guitar. Rounding out the tonewoods, a premium Sitka spruce top adds a touch of tonal magic, and a black ebony fingerboard and bridge complete the look. One strum and you'll see that the Martin 00-28VS acoustic guitar is the kind of instrument you'll never want to put down!

Sitka spruce and East Indian rosewood - premium tonewoods for a beautiful sound

You just can't beat the sound of solid Sitka spruce and solid East Indian rosewood. For such an affordable guitar, the Martin 00-28VS spares no expense on its tonewoods. You'll love the crisp sound of the 00-28VS's solid East-Indian rosewood back and sides, and they look fantastic. What's more, the 00-28VS is topped with solid Sitka spruce, adding rich and mellow overtones. When you imagine what a vintage acoustic guitar is supposed to sound like, this is it!

Super-comfortable Grand Concert body style provides excellent tonal balance

Arguably one of the most comfortable body styles for acoustic guitars, the Martin 00-28VS has a smaller than average Grand Concert shape. It's the perfect fit when you're looking for a more manageable instrument than larger body styles offer. It also means the 00-28VS is a particularly good fit if you're a fingerstyle player.

Tone that will only get better over time

One reason that vintage Martin guitars sound so rich and captivating is that they've had years to age and mature. Solid wood guitars flex over the years and their tone "settles in" after lots of playing. The 00-28VS sounds amazing right out of the case - but give it five or ten years, and you'll be blown away by the additional harmonic richness that develops over time.

Martin 00-28VS Acoustic Guitar at a Glance:
  • Vintage Series acoustic guitar, built like an original 00-28 from the turn of the 20th century
  • Color: Natural
  • Grand Concert body style has a smaller feel that's extremely popular for fingerpicking
  • Exceptionally rich and balanced tone from the Sitka spruce top and East Indian rosewood body
  • Polished gloss finish uses an aging toner to create a finely-aged appearance
  • Hardshell case included

At age 71 it takes a lot for me to get excited about anything. This 00-28vs is clearly the best guitar I have ever played well balanced and beautiful. I clearly feel like I have gotten more than my monies worth.

It's been a long while.....

...Since I first received this diminutive instrument. I ordered it on March 31, 2015 earlier this year. I felt I needed to play it, live with it day in and out for a good period of time before I could write anything worthwhile about it, before I could describe its character as it has been revealed to me. First off, as one would expect from C.F. Martin, the guitar was impeccably made; the simplicity of appointments belie its superb attention to detail in every aspect. When I first took the instrument out of its case, I was taken somewhat aback by its truly tiny size and rather odd, unusual body shape and bridge/soundhole proportions and location on the sound board. It definitely is something that grows on you, grows with you as time passes. Because the neck is wider than the steel string acoustics I own and am accustomed to playing, that and the fact that it is a 12-fret neck, it was a long bit of time adjusting to the new physical dynamics. It amazes me how just a small figment of dimensions, either larger or smaller, can have such an impact on one's own playing approach and capability. In time, I grew into the mindset of playing this instrument, making subtle, necessary adjustments to my playing approach. It was really just getting to know this instrument, developing a vital connection. And now, these many weeks and months later, this guitar feels like I have always owned it; it has always belonged to me, and I to it. I never cease to delight in the scent of hand worked woods that waft out of the guitar when I find myself wrapped around it in the midst of a challenging fingerstyle passage. I never cease to appreciate the fact that other hands, other lives, were a part of creating this musical art piece. The 00-28 VS has a sound that is folksy and whimsical, full of clear, woody tones and ringing, bell-like resonances. It can whisper in a hushed voice in one passage, then shout in a full bodied rant in another, but always composed and articulate, sweet and beloved, familiar..... This is my second C.F. Martin; my first is an HD-28 I purchased new in 1988. I am looking forward to growing old with this new addition to my guitar brood, if you will. If the 00-28 will cultivate a sound as wondrously sweet and complex as the HD-28, then the next 25 years is something I am truly looking forward to. I have owned and played guitars since 1974. Each instrument is a part of my life's story; each has its own story that I smile to remember till this very day. This guitar has become my default instrument I go to first. The balanced, even musical voice it generates is not matched by any of my other instruments. I never took 12-fret small bodied guitars seriously in times before. I really had no idea what I was missing. Like this Martin 00-28 VS, Sweetwater Music has become my default music store. Arend Raby made this purchase so easy and painless, without the often lingering doubts and misgivings that can accompany purchasing online. He was always accessible and ready and willing to help -- whether with answering questions or figuring out how to make things happen, a true professional and a positive force for the company he represents. Arend definitely is my go-to representative at Sweetwater.

"Ahh...This is it."

"Ahh...This is it." That is what I said after trying several guitars in this price range then handed the 00-28VS and running a pick across the strings one time. An hour later it went home with me. A week later my wife asked what I thought of my new Martin. My answer: incredible, responsive, sweet, full, percussive, loud, soft... just incredible. She laughed and said; "I've never heard you use that many words to describe anything before!" A week later I came home to find her playing my new 00, she looked up, smiled, and said "you're right."
