Vintage construction, modern playability

The Martin 000-17 acoustic guitar has the popular Auditorium body that has been a favorite among performing guitarists for many decades. Its body delivers rich low end, while giving each note a balance and clarity that works as a solo instrument or for accompanying your voice. The neck joins the body at the 14th fret for a total scale length just over 24.5". And the neck is built with Martin's Modified Low Oval profile with High Performance Taper to appeal to moder player's demands.

Sonically rich wood combination

The mahogany, spruce, and rosewood wood combination used on the 000-17 is exceptionally popular for the way it balances warmth, detail, and a wide frequency response. The solid Sitka spruce top offers great stiffness-to-weight ratio to get maximum volume and power from your strings. The solid mahogany back and sides ensure your tone stays even across the frequency range, while delivering plenty of warmth. And the rosewood fretboard also contributes to the rich harmonic warmth of the guitar.

Streamlined appearance

Both modern players who want a striking-looking instrument and lovers of vintage Martins will love the straight-forward appearance of the 000-17. The guitar's minimal fretboard inlays and simple ivoroid binding and pickguard give it the look of a well-loved prize from the pre-war era. And Martin's Black Smoke satin finish helps enhance the tone of the guitar by letting the woods move and breath naturally. Now you can buy a brand-new Martin from Sweetwater and get a pre-war Martin experience.

Throwback to the 1930's

I've owned the Martin 000-17 for a month and it's a great buy for the money. Solid wood, American made! It's a throwback to the 1930's when people ordered guitars from companies like Montgomery Ward and Sears by mail. It is plain but classic. It projects well, despite weighing in at just over three pounds. The smoke look and pickguard are a cool contract. This could become a classic. Minimalistic Martin.

Surprising Punch

When I made his purchase I was expecting a decent sounding instrument comparable to the 15 series, of which I'm a fan. So, I expected to be completely satisfied with the purchase. I don't know if it's the new "simple dovetail" neck joint or what, but I was very surprised by the volume, power, and resonance of this guitar. It can really bark, but can handle lyrical playing as well as the raunchier styles. While these smaller necks are not my favorite, this guitar plays very nicely. All in all, I like this guitar even more than I expected to like it and I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a smaller bodied guitar that punches well above its weight and has beautiful tone to boot. Overall I consider this to be a very good guitar. When you consider the price point, it seems even better.
