Think about all the great gear that’s been introduced in the last ten years or so. Chances are you ordered something that was so hot, the demand was far greater than the supply, which meant that you had to (arrgghh!) wait. Just the sound of that word gives most musicians a huge headache, blurred vision or in rare instances, creates a desire to pound on hard objects.

We knew when Mark of the Unicorn showed us the prototype of the 2408 that this was one of those products. It carried a surprisingly low price tag and offered studio owners a tremendous amount of flexibility. What’s more, it came bundled with a high quality Mac program for recording, editing, mixing and mastering. It also didn’t hurt that this was a product from a manufacturer that already had a proven track record for producing best-selling software. So you probably didn’t really need to be a psychic to predict that orders would literally pour in for these units.

If you were one of the people who had to get placed on our “waiting list” for a 2408 of your own, we are truly sorry that we couldn’t ship you one immediately. But here’s some great news: MOTU has caught up with back orders, and now, so have we. Meaning that if you were waiting for the perfect time to buy a red-hot 2408, well, that time is going to be right now.

If you aren’t sure if this package does what MOTU says it will, just ask the staff at Electronic Musician, a group of industry professionals with high standards that are notably hard to impress. Their conclusions? “The 2408 does everything MOTU says it can do, and it does it extremely well.” They continue by adding: “MOTU has come through on a big promise to deliver an extremely flexible, efficient and affordable (system) that is easy to use and sounds great.”

If you have been off vacationing in the Gobi desert and have no idea what a 2408 is or what it does, we offer this brief (yet brilliant) overview. The 2408 core system (list price just $995) consists of the I/O audio interface (pictured here) along with one PCI-324 card. Said interface sports three sets of 8-channel ADAT Optical ports, three sets of 8-channel TASCAM TDIF ports, eight channels of analog ins and outs, plus one S/PDIF input and two S/PDIF outputs. And, oh yes, it is capable of handling 24 input and output channels at one time. The unit employs super quiet 20-bit converters on both the ins and outs and ships complete with AudioDesk software, which is basically the audio portion of Digital Performer sans MIDI. AudioDesk supports 24-bit recording and can export OMF files for full compatibility with Pro Tools sessions. It also supports both the Adobe Premiere and MOTU Audio System (MAS) plug-ins and comes with the same 32-bit plug-ins that ship with Digital Performer 2.42. Whew!
