Welcome to the inSync report of the 117th AES Convention!
This year’s 117th AES Convention brought us to the city by the bay, San Francisco, California where art, culture and social change is still causing affect throughout the rest of the world. Whether walking the street, taking in the sights or crawling the AES exhibit hall at the Moscone convention center, it seems only fitting that the theme to this year’s show was, “The Art of Audio”; based on all the fantastic new products we experienced, the happy marriage of art and audio is very much alive in music technology and with those whose passion is in making music, audio engineering and producing professional audio.
The convention itself was simply remarkable with 417 manufacturer’s exhibiting (just three shy of an AES record!). Roger Furness, the executive director of AES, said, “We had the highest pre-registration that we’ve ever had, which is very encouraging… there’s a real thirst for knowledge.” There were a number of fantastic new products that Sweetwater customers are going to want to learn more about. For software DAW users, Apple, Steinberg, Cakewalk and Digidesign all announced and were showing new versions of Logic, Nuendo, Sonar and Pro Tools. Microphone aficionados will enjoy Earthworks’ new DrumKit System, RODE’s NT2-A and Audio Technica’s AT2020 side address value microphone. Tascam, RME, PreSonus, Mackie (and a host of others) were showing new computer-based audio interfaces, and there was a room full of new preamps from the likes of Universal Audio, Aphex and PreSonus. Stay tuned for a full report of all the exciting new products in this week’s inSync. Can’t wait? Check it out online here!
The crew from Sweetwater was fortunate enough to fly out to the convention a day early to spend the afternoon enjoying a guided tour of Digidesign’s corporate headquarters in Daly City, just outside of San Francisco. It’s easy to be impressed by the energetic and creative working environment at Digi headquarters, but imagine our excitement when they arranged a private screening of their new live console, the Venue System! This is a system that has obviously received a great deal of research and development and was easily one of the most sought-after and well attended products during the show. On a side note, celebrating twenty years in business, Digidesign hosted DigiWorld concurrent with the AES convention. Held at their own facilities this year, DigiWorld was well attended and featured several development partners and Pro Tools user seminars.
Be sure to take in all the new products released and showed at the 117th AES Convention and enjoy the fact that music technology continues to march forward.
