A Vacuum Tube Ribbon Mic? Royer Says “Yes!”

They said it could never be done, so naturally, someone did it. Royer Labs has introduced the latest addition to its R-Series microphone line, the R-122V, which is the first commercially available vacuum tube ribbon microphone ever designed. It’s a surprisingly compact, bi-directional mic with a flat frequency response and, just like its predecessors, has the ability to withstand high SPL levels, making it well suited for applications previously considered totally off-limits to ribbon microphones. By incorporating vacuum tube electronics into the same basic transducer system used in the popular R-121 and R-122 ribbon mics, the R-122V provides an output of -37dB, which is about 13dB hotter than an R-121.
