In keeping with years of tradition, Sweetwater is proud to offer our EXCLUSIVE online report of this summer’s most exciting music trade show – Summer NAMM 2004! E-MU 0404

Okay, so it’s not completely new, but E-MU’s 0404 audio interface just started shipping at Sweetwater, and it’s “bang for the buck” is so strong that it’s worth mentioning here. Plus, the crowd at the E-MU booth was clammering over this thing.

E-MU’s 0404 Digital Audio System provides a host of professional features at an unbelievable price, including 1/4″ analog inputs and outputs, optical and coaxial S/PDIF, and MIDI I/O. The 0404 uses pristine 24-bit/96kHz A/D and D/A converters that deliver an incredible 111dB (A/D) and 116dB (D/A) dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratios, guaranteeing you maximum headroom, ultra-low noise and unmatched sonic quality.

In addition to its professional-grade I/O, the E-MU 0404 also features the same powerful E-DSP hardware acceleration as E-MU’s more expensive Digital Audio Systems, giving you an effects processor that can deliver over 16 simultaneous hardware-accelerated effects. The E-DSP processor frees your computer from running CPU-intensive plug-ins that limit audio performance – a feature only offered by the most high-priced DAWs on the market. E-MU’s 0404 ships with over 500 effects presets, and its effects architecture is fully expandable, allowing you to add more plug-ins to your system as needed. The E-DSP processor also provides zero-latency, hardware-based mixing and monitoring via the included PatchMix DSP mixer, delivering flexibility in routing audio between all of your physical and virtual inputs and outputs – no external mixer needed.

Best of all, the E-MU 0404 ships with comprehensive ASIO 2.0 and WDM drivers, so you can use its pristine I/O and powerful processing power with your favorite audio and sequencer applications. And for users just getting into desktop music creation, the E-MU 0404 ships with a comprehensive software package that includes Steinberg’s Cubasis and WaveLab Lite, SFX Machine LT, and a trial version of Minnetonka’s diskWelder BRONZE.

Gibson Digital Guitar System

In 2002 Gibson teamed up with 3Com and Xilinx, two of the preeminent makers of computer chips, and developed a prototype digital guitar that converts the analog signal into a high-quality digital signal inside the guitar. Stray frequencies entering the guitar pickups are completely eliminated along with analog line noise induced through the guitar cable. In other words, the limitations of analog technology are in theory completely removed. A guitarist can run a cable over 2000 meters with no loss of audio quality.

The best part of the Gibson Digital Guitar system is its delivery of signal processing on a string-by-string basis, providing increased quality and flexibility. This provides unprecedented control with the ability to adjust volume, pan and equalization of each string individually. Imagine using six guitar amplifiers – one for every string. Or recording all six strings individually into a computer. Or sending the six-string digital signal to a compatible guitar processor. The guitarist can have a crunch (heavy metal) sound on the low strings, medium distortion on the middle strings and a clean sound on the high strings.

We heard the Digital Guitar system at a demo held in Gibson’s Cafe, and must admit that the possibilities seem exciting. While pricing wasn’t quite nailed down, it is safe to assume that these guitars won’t be out of the ball park for many serious guitar players either. The guitar we saw at the demo was blue, but they did show a burst as well. Finally, Gibson believes that these guitars will be due out sometime this fall…

The Gibson Digital Guitar System features:

  • A genuine Gibson guitar, 100% compatible with existing equipment

  • Gibson’s patented HEX pickup, which senses up-and-down motion (like an acoustic guitar pickup) and side-to-side motion (like an electric guitar pickup) for each string

  • MaGIC-enabled digital transport, carrying multiple channels in both directions over standard Ethernet cable

  • Gibson’s BreakOut Box, with 8 outputs (1/4″ jacks) – one for each string, plus classic humbucking pickup output and pass-through for microphone; 2 inputs carry audio back to guitar for monitoring; split mode assigns strings to different amps

This is a serious cab for serious players.

Martin 000ECHS Bella Nezzera

A legendary musician and performer for more than 40 years, Eric Clapton needs no introduction. Hiroshi Fujiwara stands as one of modern Japan’s most important cultural figures, a visionary DJ responsible for creating and introducing cutting-edge “club” music and fashions to Tokyo in the 1990s. The two became friends while working together on music projects. During one of Clapton’s visits to Japan, he and Fujiwara began envisioning a custom acoustic guitar that blended the best in design and sound. Over time, the ideas were fleshed out and, with Martin’s Dick Boak facilitating the project, C.F. Martin built eight of these unique custom guitars.

At Eric Clapton’s suggestion, the model is named in Italian, “Bellezza” meaning beautiful and, “Nera” meaning black. It is a truly unique and striking guitar.

Martin Tattoo

My personal favorite guitar at the show is the Martin Tattoo. Apparently, a task team at Martin was formed to create a guitar inspired by traditional American tattoo art. The Tattoo features “tawny satinwood” HPL back and sides, an HPL top with imprinted graphics and a natural Stratabond neck. In addition, each guitar is accompanied by a tattoo themed strap. Even if you’re not into the art of tattoos, this is a very American-looking guitar that drew a LOT of attention here at the show.
