Sony Discontinues MiniDisc Players

Sony has announced that they will stop making MiniDisc players next month. The MiniDisc format, launched in 1992 as the intended replacement for cassette tape, has had a surprisingly long run given intense competition from MP3 players such as the Apple iPod. Portable MiniDisc players were discontinued in 2011. The company has stated that it will continue to manufacture MiniDisc media.
